I created for each type one before re-installing directX 9.c
and one after as I noticed the re-installation of PZC (and/or manual installed files) have "switch off" the system.dll file for Directx !?

I'm not aware of anything in the Kharkov installation that would switch anything off in DirectX. Could you try updating your video (2007) and audio (2004) drivers as well please, so that we can rule those out as contributing factors?

Could you post a Log file for us too please?

Hm, I have bad experience updating video drivers - card is old, I admit and newer drivers tend to mess up the TV-tuner. I think I'll pass and wait until the problem itself is identified. Thanks anyway!

Ok, but the problem may end up being driver related.

Same error from dxsetup (see post #7)

If you are getting errors when running the DirectX Setup then that's bad news actually - that should run on any system where Windows is working properly. It's an installer straight from Microsoft.

I can't say if that is the issue, but it definitely would concern me.

Driver related - well, my gut (and computer experience) tells me no - I might have to eat that... [:)]

As to dxsetup, the one dwl from net runs fine, it's the one in the redist directory that gets the error. It is from 2005, older than my drivers. [:)]

Could each of you try setting the various graphics settings in the configuration when you launch the game to their lowest possible settings and tell me if that makes any difference? Also, could you try turning Shadows "Off" in the in-game Options screen and let me know if that makes any difference?

Understood, but it should just skip updating newer files in my expereince, it shouldn't give an error and fail. Very odd.

Another thing to try is turning down your video and audio acceleration via DxDiag or your drivers/video properties to see if that gets you past this issue until we figure out what's going on.

There's clearly something about your specific systems that is not agreeing with Kharkov, but I can't see a common thread yet and we cannot duplicate this on any system we have here, so let's keep trying and see if we find the problem.

Thanks, unfortunately in your case the Log doesn't tell me much. I'll fix the forum to allow .log files to be uploaded, thanks for mentioning that.

Quick question for all of you:

Do you have both Winterstorm and Kharkov installed on your systems or just Kharkov?

If both, did you install Winterstorm first and then Kharkov?

I only have Kharkov installed.

Lowest settings w/o shadows - still Loading Interfaces...

Not keen on turning down acceleration...

That's right. Ok, at least this does not seem to be an issue related to one or both being installed. That rules out a lot of possibilities.

Got PCW installed bfr and Aft PCK and was running fine, removed it after PZK freezed.

You should keep it installed if you want to use the Winterstorm content. But it's pretty clear that's not the issue here as far as I can tell.

The reason I asked about this is that one of the things that happens in the "Loading Interface" section is that it loads the various media files for the map level. If it was somehow trying to load a Winterstorm map without Winterstorm being installed, that might cause this type of problem. But we're seeing this for folks with only Kharkov and folks with both Winterstorm and Kharkov (and Winterstorm installed first before Kharkov, which is the correct order to get all the extra content in Kharkov). So I don't think that could be the problem at this point.

I know this seems counter intuitive, but try cranking UP the settings. If you have an LCD monitor, make the resolution the same size as the default of your monitor. Also, up the bit depth to 32 bit. I notice in the Logs that it is crashing while it is trying to create the DirectX device.

Some news:
I can run WS, but when I quit/Exit, I wind up in the same Kharkov Loading Interfaces (still hanging)...

Is exiting WS supposed to trigger Kh?
