The defence is intended to be used if the attacker is only on Italian soil, not if he is in France too. But I’m missed to add the check for intervention from controlling major power that is needed for the defence too be used.
I will add the check for the IT MTN, in theory with railway movement and poor French placement of units in the Alps, it could reach Berne.
Real cases of this defence: is an IT only attack or allied attack from a conquered Italy with France is still in Axis/Vichy hands

Attacking Switz. is pretty darn foolish, even for rookies. I mean come on, a MTN unit in a city/Moutain hex? It's just plain ugly for so very little gain.
Maybe I could see some sort of weird late war allied DOW to outflank or exploit a week corner in GE, but even then I doubt it.

Foolish doesn't matter to the AIO. It has to know what to do when the question of where to set up the units arises. As was mentioned before, I could let teh heavy-handed code for "where to place reinforcements/move units to" try to figure this out, but I would rather leave that code with as limited a scope as possible.
1 - pre-planned scripts for setting up minors,
2 - separate routine for placing reinforcements on the map,
3 - separate routine (massive calculations) for where to move units.
#2 is different from #3 because reinforcements have to be placed in cities/ports, which severely limits their choices.
To get back to your comment, if the AIO places its units well (e.g., the Swiss) then the new players should quickly learn the futility of a DOW on Switzerland. But if the AIO screws it up, then the experienced WIF players will exploit the weakness pitilessly. The goal is to avoid the latter situation, which has the benefit of assuring the former.

I have seen a couple of games where experienced players have attacked Switzerland. Mostly out of desperation because of Germanys lack of progress into France. They eventually managed to slugg their way through Switzerland only to face a new French defence line on the other side.

Shannon, I know. However I don't think working much beyond some simple basics is worth it. Consider the time investment for something that happens less 5% of the time.

Well, that is why Peter is working on this for me[;)] - with the help of other forum members.[&o] I spend only a few minutes a day reading through the posts about setting up the minor countries.
The idea is that once the dust settles on what should be considered (conditional rules) and reasonable set up positions, Peter can type these up rather easily, and Voila! it is done.

I do have continual concerns about exploitable weaknesses. To my way of thinking, that is one of the main failures of other AIOs. If the AIO has a deficiency somewhere, some player will discover it, boast about his discovery to everyone else, and then the AIO is derided as 'pathetic'.
