We have been doing turns pretty fast, for the most part we are both surprising each other, I know from my side just when I think I have the advantage in an area it quickly swings the other way. I believe he might feel the same, but you understand all good Samurai never admit fear and surprise.

Eastern Pacific
The KB vanished from around Pearl after its 3rd strike on the port and airfield, the field is still trying to recover, but none of the BB’s have sunk but as you can surmise none of the ships will be battle worthy for many months.

He has captured Canton, Makin, the just recently Baker and Tarawa, A possible surprise for him was Carrier planes showed up the day after the Tarawa landings and sent some ships to the bottom. The first US CV strike of the war, hmm I wonder where the KB is?

Southern Pacific
Rabaul is the only action happening here, Scott landed 3 to 4 SNLF on Dec 7th, I quickly reinforced with additional troops and he has done more also. There have been several attacks by him most at 0-1 but one at 1-1. He was also surprised when the CA Louisville showed up and delayed some additional landings then the CL Adelaide showed up and proudly wrecked havoc, this area is the battle of the minor forces and still hangs in doubt,
The Louisville bombards the Japanes troops daily to try and keep their spirits down. Will it be enough? Below are some battle results of this area.

Phillipines
Scott has landed in almost all the bases except Clark, Bataan, Manila down to Naga, he just has sneakly landed behind my units at Naga, and they may be in peril! Very good move on his part. Aside from his strikes on Clark, Manila harbor and my strafing and bombing of ships to no noteworth affect the only real action is the DD’s Pope and Peary who both are streaming smoke from damage days ago, sallying forth and causing havoc!

So all in all I am happy to have held this area in a stalemate but will soon lose control once the heavies move in! That is of course unless the POW shows up to the party!
Just like not knowing where the KB is can be more powerful then use, the POW has to make Scott respect the area!

He is held at Alor Star but has invaded most of the eastern bases and is pushing me back from Khota Bharu, He did a paradrop at Malaca and seized a base in my rear area that I need to recapture, The Repulse has escaped thru the channel dash just before he closed it with Khota Bharu being used as a level 4 field. China, It is a big mess of troops here, still getting a handle on it with all the guerillas and everthing nothing significant to talk about except Hong Kong and some troops that just moved into Hengchow. My subs have only claimed a few hits, his had tagged and sank numerous vessels including 2 torpedo’s into the BC Repulse and sinking CL Mauritus.
I have lost 5 SS all sunk in Manila harbor, he has lost 1 SS sunk 60 miles SW of pearl

Economics
Its to early in the war to be concerned with economics but miri and Brunei still are the only bases he controls with significant resources though that will change in the next couple of weeks, but of those we have seen heavy damaged inflicted by our engineers at Brunei, it shows only approx 95 operational centers with 202 damaged! Oil centers, can we say No Oil for you!

Dec 17th thru 20th things keep getting worse for the allies, I just should have figured the few bright spots where mere blips on the Japanese advance.

The KB has still not been found, but a US CV sank 5 AP’s around Rabaul, so he has lost his supplies more will need to be brought in. The 1st Round at Rabaul has gone to the Allies

In Borneo area, both Tarakan and Ambonia fell quickly as my ships did not attack at ambonia allowing him to land. Planes have finally shown up at Kendari and Ambonia, what type I have not seen they just arrived on the 20th.

In Burma on the 20th Alorstar falls quickly without warning and Hong Kong defends but the situation get grimer. I have moved Chinese forces into Canton so there is some stress there.

Most of my troops have pulled back into Singapore, the siege will begin in a few days.

Overall the Japanese advance begins again, unthwarted!

Phillipines both DD Peary and Pillsbury meet untimely ends to surface action. He has moved into Clark and will attack soon. At Naga he has 3 divisions now, it will be interesting what happens there, if they retreat they surrender.

Kimmel “Whats this war coming to Germans and Japanese in league, no we better not round up the Germans, next thing you know we will have to get the Dutch!, You know I understand the Japanese blame the dutch for starting this war, seems some sub off Borneo torpedoed and sank one of their transports carrying tourist on a hunting expedition!”

Thoebald “That sounds like the Dutch, always going off half cocked, its strange how quick the Japanese reacted as though they planned a war all along, Besides Pearl, they struck Manila harbor, bombed Sinagpore, landed in the Phillipines, Rabaul, Canton, all over the Borneo area.

Kimmel “Well Japans Carriers hit us pretty hard at Pearl, 3 days they pummeled our airbase and ports, luckly we only lost 2 PT boats, although all 8 battleships will not be ready for a long time and other vessels have been heavily damaged. Also we just have gotten the airbase operational again just before Christmas, and are now just sending out scout planes. We will find those Carriers soon”

Thoebald “I understand they have captured Canton, Baker, Tarawa and Makin already, do you fear more landings”

Kimmel “Yes more could come but our carrier planes attacked some transports at Tarawa after they unloaded so they will have to be more careful. Our first priority is to defend what we have and find the Japanese Carriers. They lost over 100 planes attacking Pearl, so there pilots need to be replaced we believe they might be involved in an operation called Samurai Sword!”

Thoebald notices, both Scott and Fuerer King stop talking at the mention of Samurai, very suspicious he thinks.

The new troops talk in hushed whispers in the dark, unknowingly a Japanese soldier is just a few meters away listening and understanding their conversation.

Soldier1 “Well now that we have arrived I guess its about time we push these Japs back into the water!”

Vet Soldier of Larkforce Bn “Son, I was here on Dec 7th when the Japanese landed, if it wasn’t for some smooth action by our commander LTC Burgess we would be shooting monkeys for food in the jungle, as it is it’s the Japs starving, Now I won’t say it was all just us, as LTC Spartan and the Independent Coy showed up shortly afterwards to help bolster our lines, even with that the Japs began to whittle our fortifications down. They where ferried over by some small transports that have been about the area. That off course would not have been possible except the CA Louisville also showed up and sank the destroyers guarding the Japanese troop ships and scattered them about, a few days later our own CL Adelaide showed up and gave the Japs a right good spanking, after alls said and down about 5 enemy units have landed, one of which appears to be an airfield company. We where still in hot water till a few days ago and suddenly what pulls into our port, but a Large US Carrier, she was a bigun, I heard tell her planes had sunk every Jap ship in the area as she came in.

Soldier1 “ Gawd that must have been something to see, where are the ships now? I don’t see anything in the harbor.

Vet “Well the CV wasn’t alone her and her escorts went and drained every bit of fuel we have here in Rabual, then she just sailed out, not sure where but if I was the Japs, I’d be worried. As to the Adelaide and Louisville they also left in other directions, as they had no fuel here. Don’t you worry son, they will be here to protect us!

Soldier1 “We would have been here sooner, except there was a lot of political fighting over whether we could go or not, seems we went to load up and they told us no, our polictians have to give the OK, well that took a few days for them to come to an agreement, finally they let us load and here we are. I’m looking to get my first Jap!

Vet “Don’t you worry son, from what I hear, there will soon be more then enough targets”

The soldiers go silent as the bushes sway a little in front of them, nothing is said for the rest of the night.

**** Manila HQ USAAFE ****
General McArthur looks over the assembled generals hovered over the planning table. He is confident in his men, but the Phillipine soldiers defiantly need more experience.

“Gentleman this is current situation, Due to then efforts of our troops in routing the Japanese landing at Lucena we were able to retreat our forces at Naga all the way back to Manila, Also the troops at Clark made it back, with one Phillipine division holding the line, until forced to retreat! Very brave and commendable. We have some tough days ahead of us, Assembled in Manila we have the entire forces of the Phillipines!”

McArthur is interrupted by one of the Phillipine Generals
Mgen Ybut “Ah excuse me sir but don’t we have phillipine divisions scattered about on the islands and don’t we hold Daveo and Cagyen in Midannao?”

McArthur “Yes, Yes we do hold those, but Manila is the most important piece of this operation, as it is the harbor for which our fleet can be safe in.

Mgen Ybut “Ya but sir, it appears the fleet has fleed, the only ships left are wrecked hulks, the last ships that left had heavy damaged and where sitting ducks for the Japanese Carrier planes and landbased planes at Jolo, so what are we holding the harbor for?”

McArthurs face gets bright red as he points at Ybut “Listen the Japs have 5 divisions, 3 brigades and numerous small units surrounding us, the longer we hold the more time it gives us to get reinforcements! and those will have to come by sea, thus we need the harbor!”

Mgen Ybut “Ya but, shouldn’t we have gone to corriegedor, we left those troops defenseless and that point overlooks the harbor”

McArthur “Ya but nothing, that areas nothing but a malaria zone, here we have all the luxuries of the city and buildings to hide behind, if you want to live in the Jungle then you can go but we are defending here, we have our fighters here, our subs come here, and I will not move from here!!!! The Japs may have 5 division but we shall never surrender!”

A phillipine waiter refills some of the generals glasses, no one notices him listening intently.

“Gentleman we have lost the entire peninsula except Georgetown and Tavoy, those will probably fall shortly, this is a dark hour but I wish to give you hope! We have been able to withdraw all but 2 bde into Singapore, we have plenty of supplies and with my negotiating skills I am sure we can defend Singapore from the Japanes hoard”
There is a grumble at the mention of his negotiating skills
“The enemy fears the Prince of Whales who terrorizes their dreams, we still hold Kutching and Manado that were invaded on Dec 7th, although Tarakan, Ambonia, Kendari, Brunie, Miri have all fallen, our other bases have seen no Japanese incursions.
If we hold here, they will go no FARTHER!

BGEN O’Conner “Beggin your pardon sir but didn’t 2 division take Tavoy and have not over 120 bombers begun bombing Rangoon the last two days? I think their advance will continue! Also we just heard today that Hong Kong just suffered a big setback and may fall in the next couple of days, the Chinese moved into Canton but are daily pummeled by surface ships, bombers from Taikae and extra troops have been rushed in, I don’t think that area is tenable!

Percival “Now, Now, you may have a point there about Hong Kong, hmm WCDR Burgess, your in charge of those wonderful Catalina’s in the harbor, could you fly me over to Hong Kong, I believe they could use my negotiating skill!”

WCDR Burgess snaps out of worrying about his cousin in Rabaul nods his assent

Kanagroo Jack a Reporter for the Sydney cryer on the other end sighs
“Now listen here Chap, your telling me that your squadron of Kingfishers, sank a large CS Mizuho with one 250lb bomb? This doesn’t make sense, what would a CS be doing near Darwin and what is your squadron doing in Darwin?

Patterson “Sir, we did not sink it near Darwin, I dropped a 250lb bomb on it Dec 10th in the Phillipines, we seen fire after the hit but no major damage, nothings been heard of the CS Mizuho since until 2 days ago and she was reported sunk near Palau. I’m telling you my bomb was the only damage she took, I have sunk the ship worth the most in this war!, I want my name in the paper, as for being here, since those dutch lost Ambonia we hightailed it down here to get some more Jap ships that could be soon invading Darwin!”

Kanagaroo Jack “I thought the Japs sank the US crusier Houston, and the CL Mauritus are those ships not worth more to the war effort?”

Patterson “ No No No, if I was to put points to the ships value, so you could understand, those ships would be worth only 34 to 35 points each, The Mizuho has to be worth an easy 64 points, I’m telling you I’m a hero, you write that in your paper.”

Kanagaroo Jack “Hmm, this invasion of Darwin, that sounds more interesting, tell me more about that, I think my readers are more interested in that, then some small bomb dropped 12 days before a ship sinks”

Today the Empire of Japan open its first prisoner of war camp near the Malayan town of Georgetown. Over 7600 British and Indian prisoners are to be the first interns. In shocking turn of events the 15th and 8th brigades surrendered after a superior army lead by Japanese General Hirito Numerito encircled the beleaguered British army.

Quck Summary of Dec 1941
Dec has passed quickly less then a week, we have been doing moves faster then a hooker in Singapore.
No Heavy engagements have occured but the small scale action has been fast and furious, the only large ships making regular visits is Haruna, and Kongo at Kutching, all other ships are on stealth mode for both sides.

Hong Kong, Kutching have finally fallen, as seen from map in the background of the current score below Rabaul is soon to be re invaded!
Manila has easily repulsed its first attack and Singapore awaits the Japanese to advance in he is spread out so that will take some days.

In Burma he has not advanced past Tavoy with his two divisions but he bombs Rangoon daily with no resistance, he is correct the AVG is low on planes, another difference with CHS is low plane availability!

In China I moved into Canton to relieve the pressure on Hong Kong but Scott quickly reinforced with transport ships, air transports and shore bombardments by CL's, it quickly disrupted my forces and I had to pull out, the total number of Japanese units grew to 21, so at least this has stalled other advances in other theatres by a couple of weeks hopefully.

In the North he has invaded Attu, with no resistance and the allied command awaits his next thrust, definatly Rabaul will heat up immediatly.

It has been enjoyable although CHS is definatly different then stock in terms of supply and fuel, both in much shorter supply!

Stldiver... Learned about plane availabilty in CHS the hard way, though parts of my problem had also been of my own doing. Took me several months (game turns and IRL) to clean up that mess. A number of posts on page 25 of my AAR cover the detail of my experience.

My thought is that the Allies are more vulnerable to plane shortages in CHS (we're playing scenario 158) than the Japanese, especially if Player Defined Upgrades is turned off. Since the Japanese can control their aircraft production, it's easier for them to have sufficient replacement planes for whatever aircraft types they're flying assuming they're doing their production correctly, not having any difficulties that would affect aircraft or engine production, or losing planes too quickly.

Doesn't mean plane shortages can't happen to the Japanese but they can at least control their aircraft production and try to avoid the mess if everything goes properly. The Allies get what they get... if it's not enough planes and you're not careful, you find yourself in a little "bottleneck" like I had.

It has been enjoyable although CHS is definatly different then stock in terms of supply and fuel, both in much shorter supply!

Be aware that in CHS if your level of Hurries in the pool drops below 16 you get Lysanders instead. That can ruin an afternoon.[&:]
