Game opens. 

My plan at this time is a Sir Robin to Oz, set up a defensible perimeter from Akyab to Mandalay in Burma, and try to cause as much havoc on invading forces as I can to slow down the opening onslaught.  Escaping DEI AK's will gather resources to stock pile in Balikapan, Kupang, Batavia and Soreabaja.  Troops in the Maylay Peninsula will fall back to Singapore, to try to find transport out or to hold as long as possible.  DEI forces move to establish a concetration in Batavia, Soreabaja and Balikapan.  They will fall, but perhaps in going they can really wreck the place.  In the PI, troops fall back to Clark & Manila.   I will hold Clark as long as I can to try to get air frames out as best I can.  Last stand will be in Manila.

Don't hold Clark Field - move the Baseforces into Manilla and build forts. The damaged a/c can be moved by the rail link into Manilla where they can then repair .
No point in moving resources to stockpile them - without heavy industry they are worthless. You really need to take all the oil and any supplies you can get and take them to Oz.
(Bit late now seeing how fast this game is moving - but a pointer for other newbies)

My subs wave...not sure how to get them to start firing, their aggressiveness, especially the
Dutch, are well known.  They all have loads, too.
Dutch PT boats were cannon fodder.  I've never seen one hit anything.  Now I can make up US
boats (once supplies get up to snuff).
The Japanese trick of having ASW groups set to follow their convoys is a trick I never heard
of, and it's beating the snot out of my sub force

No point in moving resources to stockpile them - without heavy industry they are worthless. You really need to take all the oil and any supplies you can get and take them to Oz.

Agreed.

Another newb mistake, I meant supplies. All the surronding islands have been drained as best I can under to impressive speed of the Japanese attack.

It would appear that with all the limitations In Game, and the carrier disaster off of
Guadalcanal, that the Japanese can take what they want as fast as they can through May 42.
The idea of ASW convoys attached to troop convoys is brilliant.  Allied subs can't do anything
effective.
Anyone have any opinions or ideas on this?

Welcome to the mammoth effort that is writing a WitP AAR.
 
A few thoughts:
 
Firstly, completely agree with 2nd ACR, go back to your opponent and change the rule that you can only attack with 1 Div at a time. On atolls this will just make it impossible to take them. I think a fair rule is that no more than a division (of combat troops) can defend an atoll - although he may baulk at this.
 
Secondly, using ASW groups to shadow his transport fleets is usual practise, mainly, as you've found out, because it is also effective. Don't worry too much, the flip side of the fact he is taking so much so quickly is that he will have to re-supply all of his ill gotten gains and he will start to feel the squeeze. Soon he will have to revert to lightly escort transport TFs and you can then strike (although, he might use the rule-stretcher of creating an uber resupply fleet and manually resupplying all his assets but this is alot of micromanagement). So, a further point on this - your STF attacks against landing forces that you were so unhappy about - that killed all his small escort boats - are actually very beneficial. He does not have enough of these ASW assets, every one that is lost is irreplaceable. In my opinion these wee escort boats are 3rd in a line of importance behind DDs and oil transports (yes even in front of the carriers - his carrier force is a shooting star and loses much of its usefulness as your air assets gain competence).
 
Thirdly, your conclusion that the Japs can do pretty much what they like until May 42 is bang on the money. The Japs get their runaway advance against little opposition while you will have to slog your way through well defended locations, but you will be an irresistable force. Be VERY selective about where you strike back during these months. Do your very best to know where his carrier forces are and follow 2nd ACR's advice regarding STFs attacking base hexes: in and out very quickly. Peddle to the metal, and be random, try not to only target size 4 bases, or always using the same compositions - mix it up.
 
Fourthly, he has been a little cruel versus a newbie by taking Noumea, but if that's as far as he goes then he is a long way from cutting off Oz, as you point out there is always British resupply, and unlike history, Oz is able to provide enough supply and usually has enough forces to defend itself. It is only when you want to use it as a staging area for your operations that it falls short of supplies and fuel. He now owns Noumea at the end of an enormous supply line. Make that a mistake, not a masterstroke. Move subs to Brisbane and make the waters around New Caledonia and up through the seas around the Solomons a death trap. Force him to move ASW assets in to try and counter you - then do a hit and run Carrier raid (when you get replacements) to clean up some of his ASW forces (be very careful about repeating this tactic obviously). Try and reinforce New Zealand (he hasn't really cut of Oz from the US unless he's taken out NZ), first reinforcements there. If you manage that then look at building up Fiji and maybe another of the smaller islands between Pearl and Fiji. In other words, cut Noumea off. Set traps for his Nells and Betties, like, a STF of a CL and 4 or so DDs, LRCAPed by carriers or LBA out of Auckland or Nadi.
 
Fifthly, and really just a run on from the end of the last point: the Nells and Betties are only good while they have good pilots. Once they have done a few mad port attacks, unescorted, against a well defended base, they will start to lack in effectiveness. If you can also get them to attack you outside torpedo carring range they are far less lethal.
 
Sixthly. Patience! You have lost your main way of striking back for the moment, but be very careful with anything you've managed to save. You have to hunker down for a bit now and defend on a line further back than you may have wanted to. But that's the hand you have. Concentrate on securing your lines of supply and husband those combat units. Try to fight the next 4 or 5 months in the DEI (where possible), China, Malaya and Burma. Run everywhere else. Use those subs as scouts too, even if they don't shoot they will tell you when TFs are passing and will inform you when they are scouted by carrier planes. Be ready to lose a few engineering Battalions as you try to get that supply line secured and bases built.

I agree with the others. Allowing a division of Japs on an atoll and only one Allied division attacking is unrealistic...you will get reamed.

It is also not historically accurate. 35,000 US troops (2 FULL DIVISIONS) assaulted Tarawa with about 4500 defenders and Betio is only about 3000 yds long.


The defenders of a Japanese held atoll had to be sulf-sufficient for considerable periods of time (drinking water for eg.) whereas the US had massive logistical support and could bring everything it needed.

I agree with the stacking.  In my inexperience I thought this was a stacking, not an attacking limit.  So newb # The Next One...pay very close attention to House Rules!
 
I'll toss it by Boba, but I did agree to this.  If he balks at all I'll game on because quiting is also against the Newb Rules [;)]
 
I don't plan on posting daily combat reports unless there are clashes, or noteworthy events.  Over the last 2 days his subs continue to have success, and mine sit on the bottom watching ships go by.  I watched 4 convoys pass Jolo, right over my Dutch submarines.  The only thing that happened here was my subs got pasted.  Espiritu Santo was invaded and taken without resistance.  My first supply convoy from Karachi to Oz is stuck in a wormhole off of Sumatra, and has not moved in 2 turns.  Dutch Harbor and Anchorage are now supplied and building like enraged beavers.  Batavia construction looks like a Super Fund site.  There are Australian air assets here, as well as most of what air support units were evacuated from Singapore.  I am seriously considering making a stand here.  The Australian air units can get upgraded as soon as more advanced air frames become available.  This is not so with British air frames, which must wait until May 42, to upgrade.   This upgrade ability/restriction is something else the Newb Gamer should keep in mind.  Batavia was resupplied, and currently has 180k in supply and 19k in fuel.  Sorebaja is low, but I hope to have a supply convoy there within the week, space/time distortions allowing.  Same with Kupang.  This will be my next major point of resistance.  All other bases in DEI are just delay points.  I already moved most of my remaining Dutch assets on Borneo to Balikpapan.  I am tring to get the garrison units off of the surronding islands as reinforcements.   I don't expect much, the aircraft there will not even fly against the invasion of Tarakan, even with escort.  But if I get lucky enough of the base will get wrecked in the taking to slow the Jap forces down. 
 
In China Changsha is being surrounded.  Reinforcements are headed that way, but I have little faith in Chinese armies with 60% or lower ToE.
 
In the Pacific I have moved all base forces scattered across the islands to Canton, Suva, Johnson and Polyarma  All supplies from the outer islands have been stripped, and all shipping is now headed to the States.
 
Major reinforcements are 13 days away. 

Do not worry about Soeber......all the supply is going to get sucked to Batavia because that is where ABDA HQ starts out........want the supply in Soerber.......move ABDA HQ......supply will follow. Be very careful with putting too much supply in Java........makes Japan a nice present when they capture it.

Then every atoll would be avoided by me.......He can have the Gilberts. I would take Tarawa ASAP though before he can build it up, along with all the other bases near there. That places the Gilberts under your airpower mid 42.
 
So now, you plan on advancing from Guad, New Guinea, and straight into the DEI. Avoid the islands of the Central Pac area except Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima.
 
Maybe a northern strike from Alaska. But I would not land on any Atoll. Make him garrison them, threaten them, but they will starve before I try to land on one.

As several who posted before me had pointed out... you have no choice but roll with the punches.

1) Conserve your forces. You can use them to counter-attack, but don't lose them foolishly. What you save today will become far more useful tomorrow.

2) Prepare for the possiblity of a Japanese advance in the South Pacific to move far beyond Noumea. In my PBEM - Suva, Pago Pago, and Canton Is all became Japanese conquests. This is going to push your shipping route between the U.S. and Australia/NZ way to the south. This shipping route is also going to become very precarious - you will have few bases to protect this shipping route, much of the sea area along this route will become easily interdicted by Jap surface ships and/or carriers. Don't count on getting very much from the U.S. to Australia or getting it there very quickly.

3) I would prepare NZ and Australia to be as self sufficient as possible for at least most if not all of 1942. Also deploy land and air forces in Australia to cover all major ports (especially the key bases along the east coast) against Japanese landing. A solid defense of the east coast of Australia is key. Darwin and NW Australia is a likely target for Japanese landings after the Dutch East Indies fall. Holding Darwin may or may not be possible depending on how much your opponent attacks it with. If you do lose Darwin, a defensive position in the interior (Daly Waters or Tennant Creek) should readily stop a Japanese ground advance southward from Darwin. Other bases in NW Australia (Broome, etc) will become death-traps in the event of a Japanese capture of Darwin, these bases should not have more than small LCU garrisons (if any). Perth is a very important base for communications between India and western Australia - you need to hold this.

4) Get what you can out of the Philippines, Dutch East Indies, or Malaya. Where you can't evacuate full-strength LCU's, you can use submarines to evacuate cadres of them - base force units (especially those with aviation support elements) are especially useful in supporting your air operations later on. The Dutch have many small base force LCU's, you should be able to get at least a few out. Submarine evacuations of cadres from base force units in Malaya and the Philippines are also possible. A cadre of any ground unit (no matter how small) can rebuild to full strength after the cadre's parent unit dies.

Dutch patrol squadrons (those flying Do-24 planes) are also very useful and can be easily flown out - transfer them out by air via Darwin. The Dutch Patrol squadrons are small but can upgrade their planes to Catalinas and later on will become very useful additions to your naval air search capability. Get as much of the U.S. air forces as possible out of the Philippines - you should be able to get out B-17's and PBY's, P-40's can island hop through the Dutch Indies, these can all transfer by air via Darwin.

Anything you get out, no matter how insignificant, will become useful later. Not to mention the VP the Japs don't get for not destroying it.

5) Position Dutch units with engineers (Base force units) at bases with oil production (Tarakan, Balikpapan, Palembang, Soerabaja among others) - these engineers will perform demolitions on oil and resource prodyction facilities at a base they're located in when the Japanese attack to capture that base with ground forces. Demolitions of oil and resource production facilities will hinder the overall Japanese war effort until the facilities are repaired.

6) Every AK, TK, AO, AP, etc leaving the Dutch Indies, Philippines, Malaya should be full or loaded with as much cargo of whatever kind as possible - including those ships you expect to get sunk anyway. A fully loaded TK with oil or fuel cargo is a bonus to you if it gets out safely, if it sinks you just deprived the Japanese of whatever oil or fuel it had as cargo. The same idea applies with other transport ships.

I can't take Tarawa, however.  I don't have the lift capability, plus it is in range of Betty's and Nells from Kwajelin and Noumea my opponent is using to keep the Pacific a dangerous place.  He is either very adept at moving them about, or has focused production here.  Raids of 36 plus aircraft are common..
 
Another plan will have to be thought up.  I am not one to sit for a year of turns, but my options are severly limited due to the disaterous carrier battle a short time ago.
 
A series of recon missions show several of the Kuril islands are already garrisoned.  So are Wake and Marcus.
 
The one thing about the Japs is, while they are very strong at the beginning, they cannot be everywhere.  This will be the root of any plan I move forward with.

Jan 3, 42

A few more turns have gone by.  Several PI islands are invaded.  Clarck recieves a Shock Attack as my remaining troops were half way to Manila.  These troops therefore abandone the march to Manila & flee to Bataan.  Without supply, they fall the next turn as the Japanese were set to pursue.  Manila still has a sizable garrison, but not enough to hold more than a few weeks at most.

An invasion at Singkawang goes off without a hitch for the Japanese.  This base falls easily.

Balikapan is invaded.  A PC and an AP hit the minefield.  All airframes are withdrawn.  One more turn & the units retreating from Tarakan would have been here as well.  I don't expect much of a defense here.

An Air Raid by 18 Nells goes unescorted against Batavia, and runs into a wall of supplied, rested Dutch fighters.  Only 4 escape the slaughter.  My first positive action [8D]

In china, the AVG finally comes to grips with the jap air force over Changsha.  Over 15 Jap planes fall, to no AVG losses.  Changsha is slowly being surrounded.  I am hoping my latest attack will re-open the road from Chungking.  Transport planes are on their way, but will take a few more turns before they go into operation.

Three supply convoys arrive in Oz...finally. My bases are getting above the 20k mark in supply, and can start refurbishing the existing units.  Fuel is the need in Oz.  It generates some supply, but no fuel that I have yet seen.

With Noumea & Esptritu Santo under Japanese rule, and with the speed and success of the attacks in the PI and DEI, I expect an invasion of Oz soon.  There are 3 RO boats off of Port Moresby, but I have nothing to send that way at this time.

I noticed that you seem to have problems with buidling/expansion settings.

Repair of damage will always occur before expansion but do you mean that epansion is turned off when you look at it next turn? If that is the case you might have some area set to computer control. better take a look before other weird things start to happen.

I think that your surface attacks only touching the escorts can be explained as the escorts are trying to protect the transports while they scatter. Once you have eliminated or breezed through the escorts the transports have disappeared. At least is the game trying to simulate something like that.

I keep checking my bases, because building forts/expanding ports bases etc. are sometimes turned off, after I specifcally turned them on. On resource structures like oil, manpower etc I turn off repair, to conserve supplies, but also to ensure max damage to these as my forces fall. Sometimes repair is set to Yes, sometimes it remains on No. Just something for the New Player to keep in mind, and an eye on.

Did you check your control settings on the Control Zone Map (Z)? All 7 of your zones should show Human Control.

Could be a version of the sync bug, or something new.&nbsp; This game is fun as all get out, but it does require a steady eye on the controls [;)]&nbsp; Just a good idea to spend a few minutes checking on any base where you have any thing going on.

OK, then I'm lost. I've been playing this game on and off for a few years but never PBEM. Don't remember ever seeing anything like that but I know that turning on Computer Control can cause hwat looks like "bug" behavior.

Otherwise I would rather expect the computer to turn on construction/expansion as I believe that the AI does it for everything.
