Have you ever wondered why, in military speak, you have a "right flank, a cernter, a left flank, a rear area" etc.?

Yeah. For the record, not only did I serve in the military, I did so in intel, and my job was compiling battle maps. I studied with the Defense Mapping Agency. I'm no idiot when it comes to maps. You can drop me in the middle of nowhere and I could orient myself (day or night) to where north is.

So is that the best you can do?

I genuinely do not think the developer gave it a second thought. I really do think it was a case of "I'm recreating a boardgame on WWI" and aligned the map as it was in the boardgame without even thinking about it.

There is no real need to delve into it any further than that. Seems obvious to me that's what happened. That's how the map in the boardgame was, he was making a computerised version of it, he recreated it faithfully...clearly to the detriment of some people.

Bingo!

I believe what one can cull out of this debate is that if there was a better zoom feature, which allowed you to back out in multiple steps (sort of like Map Quest or Google Maps) then one can easily assimilate what is developing on the front....perhaps this is a feature that would be easier for the devs to work on....

They aren't rotating the map. That's the last I heard. Afaik it's never been on the tables to rotate it....

Pretty sure it was on the table a while ago but if it's not happening then so be it. Thanks for the final word. Will spend my money elsewhere.

For the record, I am an idiot when it comes to maps. You could leave me on my frontyard and watch me get lost - day or night.
But I have absolutely no problem cocerning the map orientation of WWI.
So I am absolutely optimistic that you as an expert won't even notice the difference!

It isn't the final word....it's what I gathered from reading forums. Very early on people were having issues with the map rotation and I read at the time that it "probably" wouldn't be on the cards because of the amount of work involved.

I'm no authority on the matter...I was passing on what I understood. It could well be wrong.

If you want to take your money elsewhere on my say so, then so be it...but don't make it sound like it's me who made your decision for you. Wait for a confirmed word from someone connected directly to the project.

And yet you still manage to get confused by AGEOD WWI map... how? [8|]
So is that the best you can do?

Yup, expecially because I'm able to orient myself on it effortlessy. [8D]

Indeed. Never seen any plans to change it from anyone who would be involved in doing it.

Personally and much like others, I was a bit "disoriented" by the map orientation at first, but I got used ot it pretty fast.

Now, I actually prefer it. Seeing as most frontlines go north-south, having the north to the left allows you to have more of the frontlines in the same screen without sacrificing zoom. I also like that this carries over from the boardgame; it is, after all, a fairly true adaption of the boardgame [:)]

Ya but doesn't it kinda mess with the East Front/West Front thing. Based on the map orientation my brain is gonna think its the North Front/South Front.

Besides, I know I can't do it. I tried, but I still have the map screenshot painted in my brain somewhere and when I recall it, my brain as placed an "evil" tag on it.

There's a demo. Trying is yet the best way to figure if map orientation is really a trouble...

Yes, no doubt, and to be sure, I will try the demo at some time. That's the beautiful thing about demos. A whole lot of questions can be answered fairly quickly.

I made my own decision. You did not make it for me. Perhaps I read too much into what you said though.

Here is the quote from PhilTib where he said they probably *would* be reworking the map at some point:
The issue is what we have to do in priority... fixing the code glitches and improving documentation and gameplay is first and foremost and will takes all our time in the next months.

Reworking the map is a huge task, cumbersome, long, increasing heavily the weight of the game (those who have knowledge of graphics will know why) and for a very limited immediate benefit...

We'll probably make a try at this, but surely not now...be patient please.

If that has now officially changed to "No reworking" then no sale for me. Can someone at Matrix confirm with AGEOD whether the map will be reworked or not? Thanks.

Personally, I could care less if the map was pointing south up and colored all over in chartreuse, especially considering the 'graphics' of some of the old boardgames I used to play back in the day. What I do care about is if the game is still buggy and/or unfinished. Now that bothers me...not the map orientation.

Ditto. The map is quite functional. It does take a little getting used to, but no big deal.

Double ditto. Last night I finally had some time to play again and installed patch "i". The game really has come a long way. It is much smoother in play and no hints of stalling or crashing in 5 turns-great. There is still work to be done to make it perfect, but it is quite playable now.
