My shot: Tin Soldiers Julius Caesar (or Alexander?). Try demo beforehand if available.

I recently aquired Legion Gold and I like it, but Tin Soldiers, I recommend it.

I would also go with this suggestion for a starter. It's turn based. It's easy to get into and it's fun and challenging.

If I remember right you can skip the real-time battles in Rome Total War making it completely turn-based game.

I like Gates of Troy and Legion Gold both games are easy and fun.

I disagree with Civ 4. For a person who knows history, there is no history to it. Things move too fast.

If you're running XP and looking for an Anceints civ builder type game, I'd recommend looking for a copy of the old games; "Caesar 3," "Pharoah" or "Zeus", especially Caesar.

Do not buy "Civ Rome"!

Also keep an eye out for the forthcoming solitaire boardgame on Alexander from DVG Games. There is also a boardgame out there on the campaigns of Kind David.

Just get him a WWII game......first JTCS....then TAOWIII....then if he gets into it enough, WitP.

He seems to be leaning towards Legion Gold.  His system is an older one which I need to check the specs on.

No RTS.  Period.  Give orders, watch things happen.  Relatively easy to get into.

I thought Legion of Gold was the same engine, just a might older.  I was going to purchase LG today since I have the day off to play and then teach it to my father.  Thanks again everyone for the support and suggestions.

Heck, go download the original SC1 demo.  If he likes it, the old game is probably only about $20.  Hours and hours of fun against a decent AI and H to H, well its great with many varied strategies.
 
Later there are the more current versions if he really gets into it.  Why settle for less than all 3 combat dimensions, land, sea and air and its historical.

I assumed everyone knew, SC = Strategic Command, by one of the most intuitive and responsive developers on this planet, Hubert Cater.

PTO is surely the best Pacific theater, grand strategy, game around that doesn't take a lifetime to play.

And soon to follow, will be the Global SC version, which can be played leisurely under the constraints of todays cultural demands.

The AI is close to the best, if not the best on the market with the +2 expert level.

H to H.....well...what can be said, the customs and mini campaigns are tournament quality, even the grand campaigns can be completed on a multiple basis for tournament brackets.

I'll add the editor is TOAW capable, with dynamic scripting for the AI.

Sorry...most of the people that have a problem with the tile grid are simply missing it.

Each to his own. Other than Panther's editions, its all I play, nothing else compares.

SC and AA.....a league of their own.[8D]

You are right, SC1 would be a good choice especially for a low end system.  I am going to work with him right now on Legion Gold since he likes the time period.  One step at a time...

BTW Seamonkey, I'll bite, what's AA?

Wasn't baiting, thought you knew, the clue was the mention of "Panther".  Panther Games, Airborne Assault series, RDOA, HTTR, COTA and soon BFTB all right here at matrix(well...no RDOA).
 
Truly without reservations, AA is the cutting edge of wargame simulations, excluding the graphics.  For you now, for your dad later.

Ok, a followup of getting my father into strategy gaming...
 
I had a copy of Civ III complete.  It isn't on my system, since I installed Civ IV.  I figured, well shoot, if he doesn't like Civ III, well he just ain't a bonafide computer "strategy" gamer.  So that is where we are right now, and I will let you know how he gets along with it.  Well that is if you are interested in my quest to have more quality father and son time...[;)]
