I have a book of pure fiction called The Iron Man which says in the blurb, "All but one of the battleships in this novel are real... The Stalin is fiction but is based on the specifications of Yamato and then 'stretched'." 22 inch guns on this monster. Here is a short except.

Stalin's huge shells, each one carrying nearly four tons of high explosive, had an effect over a much wider area. The Missouri was first to feel their awesome power. None of the Stalin's shells actually hit the ship, but all six landed close by and the shock waves from the underwater blasts threw the whole crew off their feet. Even a ship the size of Missouri reacted to the detonations as though it was a piece of rag in the jaws of a small dog, being shaken from side to side.

The battle continues with Missouri and Iowa versus the Stalin (super Yamato). The book was written by John Watson and publised by Warner Books 1998.

sounds like good readin!

I found it just after it was published and recall zipping through it.  The climactic battle scene was after all the reason for reading it.

Is that the actual bow of the Yamato?  I have never seen pictures of her on the bottom.  Looks like she is listing heavily to Starboard.

what you mean? 24 inch guns? the largest i remember hearing about were 20 inch guns on Hitlers monsters and the Montanas i think

The pictures of Musashi are of a diorama based on a 1:500 Nichimo model.  Not the real thing, but well executed.

Sounds like but isn't. The book was written by someone who doesn't know much about battleships except their technical data and their exterior views. It's about a super-battleship built by the Soviet Union under utmost secrecy and hidden near Vladivostok. Never scrapped but maintained in reserve status because it was the special toy of Stalin. A renegade ex-Soviet Navy captain with a crew of about 200 former Navy men steals it to do piracy on the High Seas. This is about as realistic as The Movie That Is Not Named In This Forum is a factually correct depiction of the P.H. attack.

I severely doubt that a crew of merely 200 could do much more with a Yamato-size battleship than just drive it around under power until they need to sleep, when there's nobody there to relieve them. 200 might also be just enough to man two of the main armament turrets. Anything else is pure fantasy.

There is a passage where the author describes the cavernous space where all the steam turbines are situated that drive the ship - apparently he had something like a power station in mind.

Those are marvelous pictures.  Are Musashi's turrets actually in place?  You don't see that often.
