Jason,
I installed the 1.04 patch. I cant find anywhere that identifies the program as version 1.04. Where do I look ?
No, I still can not launch the program. I click on it and it simply goes into the new Vista "hourglass" READING: Not responding.

You can't really see that anywhere explicitly but Bergen_op_Zoom.scn is a scenario that came with 1.04. If you have that file in your Westfront folder you have 1.04.
Sometimes people make the mistake of installing 1.04 to the default location (C:\Matrix Games\...) while the original installation is located somewhere else (D:\Matrix Games\... for example)

What directory is the game installing to?
I recall reading somewhere that Vista likes to install everything in Program Files folder...
I think when you run the patch, the default is to install to C:\matrix games\john tiller's campaign series\.

Gentlemen,
I think I have had my fill of trying to get this game to run on Vista. Let it be known that I tried 8 , that's eight, installations and uninstallations. You might be able to empathize with me on this if you've ever tried to run a piece of software.
One thing that bothers me is the fact that according to you guys, I am the only person who has been so unfortunate for this to happen to them.
I assure you, I have scoured my virus program, there is nothing that appears to be hindering this install. I am the administrator on this goofy computer and that is the way I set it up to install and run. I have a legal code number too.
Thanks anyway,
Russell

Guys,
it's been a while since I've fired up JTCS.
well, I have Vista, and it has worked fine in the past, even up to at least 1.03 patch.
Don't remember when I installed 1.04 patch, but pretty sure I played a scn or too since I installed it.
Basically what's happening now is the game is not loading, when the splash intro screens finish vista tells me east front.exe has crashed.
The strange thing is, I also own the JT Battleground Series of games, and they both do not work,
EXCEPT for Battleground Gettysburg, it's the only bgs.exe that doesn't crash. All the others, inside Battleground Napoleon and all other Battleground Civil war titles crash in the same way JTCS crashes.
I've set all the .exe (east front, etc) to compatibility mode to XP (SP2), and it doesn't fix the problem.
This is really frustrating, and I even uninstalled all the games and reinstalled, and still nothing.
thanks.

Okay gentlemen,
you'll laugh at this.
Not sure if this will solve any other's problems with Vista and CS games.
Apparently (at least on my rig, Vista Basic, integrated Sound card) if you unplug your speakers or headphones, or whatever device is the output device, Vista treats it as you are lacking a sound device completely.
So on a whim (right before I was about to wipe vista out and install XP again), I plugged in my headphones and gave it a shot.
All my games worked.
strange.
Probably wondering why I wouldn't have an output device, well my cat has a liking to very thin cords and decided to repeatedly chew through my speaker cord coming from my machine. Finally gave up and use headphones occasionally when I feel I need sound, although I don't play CS with sound on usually. [;)]
