In addition to the above, all of which are excellent, I'd add Herman Hattaway and Archer Jones, "How the North Won: A Military History of the Civil War," and the other books by Stephen Sears that cover the Peninsula, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.

David Eicher's "The Longest Night: A Military History of the Civil War" is a good read. Not only battles, both well known and obscure, but little details. (Generals who were never confirmed in the rank they're known by. Lists of arsenals/armories/ordanance depots locations for both sides. The steps often needed to obtain a commission in the US Army, etc.)

Thanks paplan - I just logged over to abebooks.com and ordered "BCoF'. 1.77 + 2.50 S&H.
If anyone gets to the point where they want to read about individual battle I can heartily recommend "Gettysburg" by Noah Andre Trudeau.
I got on this site because I recently watched (for the third time) the HBO special, "Gettysburg" and my wife bought me Trudeau's book at a garage sale. Now I'm getting hooked on the Civil War after years of studying WW2. I'm also thinking of buying gg"s WBtS.
Thanks all for the discussion.
