Battle #1, situation at the end of Belgian Turn 13

Most of my supporting infantry has been shot to pieces and have fallen back to the second line (my core). However, the Japanese advance has been nearly halted. The enemy is finding it extremely difficult to advance.

The Japanese finally got around to pounding the hill with their artillery. This disrupted my supporting mortar fire, but by now the Japanese advance is in such disarray that they can't really take advantage. My Stuarts are being held in close reserve, though, just in case. This is one reason that there were gaps in my initial infantry deployment (to give my mobile units maneuver lanes if necessary).

To the south, my small force there continues to harrass the enemy advance.

Battle #1, situation at the end of Belgian Turn 16

At this point in the battle, my Belgians are driving back the Japanese all along the front. Japanese losses are not overwhelming, but they are routing and being forced to retreat. I know that I'm running out of time, so I'm applying as much pressure as I can.

Along the south flank, I've committed all of my AFVs and are driving back the Japanese there, too.

Battle #1, Turn 16 Tactical Example

This is an example of how big enemy stacks are created. There are 4 or 5 enemy units in that routing stack in the center of this screenshot. There are another dozen or so enemy units right behind them (note the offsets of the burning Japanese tanks). As all of these units pile into each other, they create excellent targets for my mortars. If enough of these big stacks are created, then it is possible to rout/retreat up to 200 or even more enemy units in a single turn. And even the powerful Japanese will likely have their force morale broken if that happens. My experience tells me that I'm close to achieving this on Turn 16. If I can keep up the pressure, and if the Japanese keep piling into my mortar zone, then I think I'm close to victory. And this is even though I haven't destroyed lots of enemy units.

Battle #1, situation at the end of Belgian Turn 19

At this point, every single Japanese unit you see on the map is routing/retreating. In addition, lots and lots of Japanese units that you don't see are routing/retreating, too. The Japanese force morale was broken at the end of this turn and the battle ended at that point.

Of course, the computer fired one last barrage of artillery and of course it destroyed the only Stuart I lost in this battle. This is so typical that I've become used to this sort of behavior on the part of the game engine. Oh well. I'm just happy that my Belgians succeeded in their first battle.

Battle #1, Summary Report

Note that even the score is very lopsided, this is due mainly to all those points-per-turn victory hexes. The actual losses were pretty low for both sides, and much more even than the final score indicated.

Battle #1, Core Summary

This is what my core looked like at the end of the first battle.

This is the only time I'm going to post my core like this. From now on, I'll be posting my core through the Mr. Fix campaign utility.

Noypi53,

Go to the main Steel Panthers Page and the Mr. Fix campaign utility is stickied there.

Riun T,

I have to go back to the hospital again. Just a minor procedure this time so I should be back with this campaign in a few days. Ammo crates work just like ammo trucks except that the crates must be transported and unloaded to work.

Well, vahauser, you have certainly demonstrated the concept that foot infantry crossing open ground against even light artillery is not a good idea. As long as you have ammunition for your mortars, the Japanese cannot advance.

Against this sort of defense, the Japanese should use (heavy) armor, which they don't have, tactical airpower, or heavy artillery. The Japanese should have air superiority at this point in time, which should allow them to spot your mortars from the air, but I don't know what they have to actually wipe out those mortars.

Anyway, good luck with the hospital thing, and may you return quickly to provide us with more of these AARs and discussions.

Thanks about the sticky, Vahauser.

Good luck with the hospital thing as well.
