The tubes seem short in the picture for the Type 88 12.7cm/40, but maybe it is just the perspective of the shot.

Methinks you are correct, little alien... it is a matter of perspective and that thing in Brady's picture sure couldn't handle a 240mm breech.

For comparison, here is the the 120mm Type 10 DP gun to which I referred, also from the Navweaps site. So far as I can tell, there is very little difference between this mount and that for the 127mm Type 88.

Ok, I can see the similar points in the referance pictures, but I have two observations, one is that in most pictures of these weapons whear their are Men present for scale, the gun and mount look smaller than the mount does in the above picture, though that could be do to the angle of the picture and that most of the men are sorta down slope from the gun, skewing the scale of it a tad.

Also the fact that afik, non of these were used by the IJA, but I think I nead to get beyond that...

Ok, I don't have a fnacy program to manipulate pics but this is what I can do. We can use something we can pretty well guess the dimensions of and then project it onto the item in question. Assuming the soldiers hand width is approximately 10 cm, it appears the breach is somewhere in the neighborhood of 25-30 cm in diameter. That monster 240 mm gun would have a much larger breach; so I think we can put that one to bed.

I think it is a Type 88 but could be a Type 10.

I am betting it went something close to this...
IJA unit buys IJA units several barrels of good sake and invites them to a BBQ under the guise of the inter branch friendship. IJN unit wonders why IJA unit is being so nice to them but at this point in the war good sake is hard to come by. They accept.
Next morning waking sore and with varying degrees of hangovers they stumble out of their quarters only to realize...

Looking at it, I think LoalYokel and the Martian both ought to get some points for this puppy. That mount is so very close to both their suggestions, and the breech clamp ring for 120mm shouldn't be all that different from a 127mm.

Maybe the IJA guys are just sloggin a IJN mount up the hill? Just 'cause you are humping it, doesn't mean you own it

What type of uniforms did the SNLF units use? I'm just curious since the gun is mis-ID'ed could the soldiers hauling it uphill also be mis-ID'ed? And it is impossible for us to ID it on one photo, especially when the publisher of the photo mis-ID'ed it to begin with. It holds definate similarities with both the 120mm Type 10 and the 12.7cm/40 Type 88/89.

Another thing to consider, weren't defensive installations typically built by Labor Engineer units? Some of those were IJA and some IJN, but I imagine who ever was on hand got the priveledge of hauling the heavy gun uphill into the position they built.

I ran this past Taki, he confirms these are in fact IJA troops and that the gun is IJN, as to when and why.....Unknown

The explenation is likely as mentioned above an IJA work party detailed to help worry it into place.
