I like VPs and victory conditions. They give you the opportunity to identify an objective, devise a plan, implement the plan, tweak the plan as opportunities and problems occur, and then see if you can achieve the plan.
In a WitP game as Japan, VPs (and auto-victory) were your only chance at winning the game. And, as the Allied player walking on thin ice as Japan came close in one of my games, it was quite a thrill to try to stave off defeat. IE, it was a blast!
I haven't checked auto-victory conditions in AE yet, but I'll tell you this - the fact that in my Coral Sea game Jap CL Katori was worth 24 points and AO Neosho 30 tells me this game is configured quite differently (in a good way).
