All very good answers.
I think you guys understood what I was aiming for.
Now I hate to bring this up, but you know how Cossacks 2: Napoleon LOOKED? Something like that. Not an RTS though, but something that nice but taking a while for each battle. You know like: each turn is one hour LOL. Cossacks 2 could have been so close if not for that RTS base building and resource gathering stuff.
Crown of Glory looks cool but I just think I would be too dumb to get it. Now, I actually played Korsun Pocket and even made a reference card for it that is linked on this site somewhere I think, do you all think COG:EE is harder than KP or any thing like Battlefront?
I get WW2 games a lot easier because usually they do not involved farming, politics and running a country.

A little bit off-topic but in my memory always the best game will be Fields of Glory (played on Amiga)

I actually liked cossacks 2, you are right I hated the base building, and I just played the campaign/single battles with no base building in it.
CoG:EE, I wouldn't recommend for you.BUt you may have a shot with simple economy.I understand you though, I like being on front commanding troops in battle, not running a country.

Anybody ever try Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle by BreakAway Games? It's supposed to use the same engine as Sid Meier's Gettysburg and Antietam games.

Aye, I recommended those earlier. Good adaptions of a very good basic engine to the Napoleonic period, and just as with Gettysburg, plenty of community-made add-ons that'll extend their lifespan, and/or let you get away from the done-to-death battles like Waterloo.
I still wish someone re-did the Solferino mod for Gettysburg for one of those games, with proper cavalry charges and assault columns etc...

The best is
Austerlitz: Napoleon's Greatest Victory.
Played against a human opponent, it's more fun that than the law should allow.

Sweet was just looking at those Breakaway Games titles. Now to dig them up somewhere cheap like EBAY since my wallet is a little tight.
I have been sinking time into AGEOD NCP and Crown of Glory but still want something single battle minded with a nice visual flair.
I may actually have to look into a Tiller Bundle to be honest since I really want depth as well. I do like the battles in COG:EE so far but I just want to focus on scenarios and not so much running a country
man 2001? Holy cow. I had no idea that Waterloo was already that old.

I may have to think about reloading Cossacks 2 as well. So little time, so many games

Good luck with that; ANGV can be hard to find.

Honestly, I wouldn't mess with WNLB if I were you. There was a lot of work put into fine-tuning ANGV to make it as representative of the era as possible. There are also a lot of mods for it, including, I believe, one for Waterloo.

Someone has posted an enthusiastic preview of Les Grognards on another forum (

Hard to believe, but Histwar does appear to be actually finally being released...for sale end September. Announced yesterday.
At this rate, even Battlefields! might get released...[X(]

Histwar looks like E:TW with subpar graphics.

If all that matters to you are graphics, then yes.
If you read up on what it aims to achieve, then gameplaywise, no.

Actually visuals are the least important part to me and I emphasize rather on spreadsheets, statistics and turnbased gameplay. However, I still prefer counters or sprites over dated 3D though.
Anyway, by regarding screenshots I got the impression, Histwar will become another simplistic realtime title from Battlefront. Tell me I'm wrong in my assumptions and I may give it a shot, considering BF releases a demo.

Fair enough.
I agree, the problem seemed a bit that it was a very small team (one?) and took so long to finish that even if the graphics were initially good, they have aged.
The gameplay sounds as if it could be good; JMM looks to have made a serious attempt to make it as realistic as possible. But I agree we'll need to wait for the demo to see if this ambitious project delivers. Here's hoping though!

The blurb looks rather promising. In particular;
HistWar: Les Grognards is one of the first - if not the first - FPC (First Person commander) game, and allows you to simulate almost all the battles of the Empire between 1805-1814.
HistWar: Les Grognards has three game modes: single player, play by email (PBEM), and multiplayer (up to 8 players). In single player, a player can choose to fight for one of the two armies, can choose to play both armies (for example for training purposes), and there is also a mode where both opponents are under AI control fighting each other. It gets better: in this last mode the player can command units as a colonel in first person mode. He is then in the middle of the conflict without knowing all the parameters.
That doesn't sound like E:TW. PBEM?! First person mode? "Without knowing all the parameters"? Can't wait to give this one a try.

Has anyone mentioned that this isn't JMM's first game?
Matrix published the first one, BTW:
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/lag ... eview.html
IIRC, there was a plan to patch it to version 2.0 and make it playable.
Eventually,
La Grande Armee at Austerlitz disappeared from the Matrix catalog and it's forums.
"Histwar" dropped the plan to patch the game in favor of a whole new game,
Les Grognards.
I'm unsure as to which of those last two events came first.

Oh well.
According to wargamer board, BF will use DRM for Histwar. Not willing to support this, so no purchase from me.

Im still looking at Hist War and trying to figure out how it plays. Real time? Combat Mission style? Turn based?

I think it will be much like a Napoleonic version of the two Take Command titles, which I guess you may not be familier with. Two of the best wargames ever,IMO, so my hopes for Les Grodnards are very high indeed. You might also like to look at Matrix' s Campaigns on the Danube 1805 - 1809, which you can play together with minatures if you wish. Once it was patched it was a great little game. Well worth a look I think.
