LBA = Land Based Air

So, you want to move the odds toward your favor by fighting close to one or more of your bases that have useful air power present.

KB = Kibo Butai, Japanese for Striking Force

It's what they called the force that hit Pearl Harbor. People use it for any carrier force with sufficient striking potential (doesn't have to be that big).

The strongest side doesn't always win the batte - plenty of evidence of that! [:)]

Two words..coordination penalty or whatever it is called. [:)]

That's seven words...[:'(]

This is the reason you won't see many allied players put 2 carriers in 1 task force. They suffer a coordination penalty and generally operate poorly when grouped together.

Plus, spreading out your carriers in individual TF's means less risk of them all being targeted by the same strike.

Look at the bright side: you still have Long Island!

From what I've seen, early in the war it's possible to get lucky vs. KB, but the odds are heavily against you. It looks like the safer strategy is to mostly run away unless you see an opportunity where you have a clear advantage because it is more important for you to just keep a carrier force alive and out there for the enemy to worry about. In the meantime, work on attriting his pilots and planes wherever he attacks and improve your search coverage and throw LBA at him whenever you can while you wait for more carriers to be built.

Basically to pull off Midway in this game you'd have to be amazingly lucky - and from some of the more detailed accounts I've read about the actual battle, that was the case IRL - the USN was very, very lucky that day.

The U.S. also had the better intel. In WitP the Allies had much better intel, I don't have enough experience to say that is the case in AE. Still, in my opinion, AE rewards recon, planning and use of intel.

It definitely rewards recon[:)] because I was using Lexington to escort a task force to Brisbane. The Jap AI landed north of Noumea and I didn't see any support ships so I sent the carrier a little north to, you know sneak up and do some damage[:D]. Oh no[:-], turns out Kaga and Akaga were in the area, completely missed by my search aircraft. First news I had they were there was the incoming airstrike[X(] which not only was a surprise but also very deadly[:(]. So yes you better search an area alot before you venture into it.

What the heck is this crap all about?!? I had more CVs, more aircraft, more surface ships, and 2 airfields full of aircraft (Port Moresby and Guadalcanal)... how in the world did they manage to do THAT much destruction?? That makes absolutely no sense to me at all!

Lmao, true enough.

I reloaded an earlier save and reengaged the Japanese TF with CV TFs with only 1 CV. Much better results. Sunk Akagi, Shokaku, Zuikaku, AND the Kaga with the loss of Yorktown and heavy damage to Lexington. Light and Moderate damage to Enterprise and Hornet. So now I see the error of my ways. :)

Of course, with KB out of the game - especially versus the AI - so is most of the fun ("fun" defined as fear of something truly bad happening to you - which is no longer possible). Since you used a restart, that means you went into action with the huge advantage of knowing exactly what you were facing and were able to effectively guarantee an overwhelming victory. Pretty much Midway on steroids.

The game would be more interesting going forward if you send only 2 or 3 CVs into action and accept the results either way.
