It's about the 14th Jan I think? Some time has passed anyway...

BURMA/INDIA
Port Blair fell to a Japanese battalion level attack. Oh, well. Tavoy has fallen as well, the defenders there held out for a very long time, best part of a month, thanks to support from Rangoon bombers. I expect an attack on Burma fairly imminently.
7th Armoured has not yet even reached Trivandrum, till they arrive Pegu's garrison is 650 AV, most of which is made up of very poor quality troops. Going to be some tension in the CBI with this unusually forward defence I think.

DEI/PI
Losing 1000 a day to bombardment at Bataan, and 15k supply has already been burned up (down to 35k). Bombers raid daily. I don't think Bataan is going to last in AE nearly as much as it did in WITP. The Allies fell back to Bataan in good order with fairly minimal casualties, and even managed to sneak in 15k extra supply and maul the Japanese armour. Makes no odds.
The ABDA cruiser force raided Ambon apparently to his surprise, they found 5 Marus and a PB, and sank the lot, escaping scot free. Yet another sting with my surface forces. [:)] He seems busy near Jolo atm, not sure whats going on there. The British airforce in Malaya is now completely extracted. And the two on-map US CVs are somewhere southwest of Java now, headed for Soerabaja to refuel.

There's been no sign of Jap carriers beyond a potential mini-KB sighting at Mersing and, some time ago now, CVs near Rabaul.

18th British Div is safely embarked and is now clearing Sumatra. I'm going to garrison Ceylon with them, bringing the core of the defence up to about 2 full divisions.

SOPAC/CENTPAC
Very quiet. Some submarine activity, a US fleet DD was sunk at Pago Pago by an IJN sub. A Jap RO boat was sunk near Townsville a few days prior so its not all bad. Batch of reinforcements, almost entirely engineers, are now debarking at Tahiti, the backstop position. Efate has been garrisoned by that marine def detachment + engineers finally. I'm sending another marine detachment to Canton Island. Some engineers are trying to build up French Frigate Shoal to an airfield 1, as part of an island chain allowing me to fly air units to Midway Island. So I'm pretty much done deploying my forces here, everything that I have is in the right spot. The initial rush is over.

Port Moresby I feel is fairly secure, there'll be a P40 squadron there soon which, with the Banshees, will make a mess of any Japs who don't have CV support in the area. It needs more LCUs but I can't do anything about that. Interesting to note for Japanese fanboys, perhaps, I don't think I rushed stuff to Port Moresby by any means, I simply used what was in the area and already earmarked in the OOB for SOPAC - by mid January this will be what you face with no massive relief attempt - 100 AV with some fortification + a few squadrons of divebombers.

No Jap activity beyond subs. No sightings. I don't think his attention is here.

17th January. Bataan fell today.

BURMA/INDIA
The Japs have cleared out Tavoy finally and are advancing towards Burma proper, currently only in Bde strength. There have been several fighter sweeps in almost overwhelming force over Rangoon - at max altitude the Zeroes gave me a kicking. Then I switched my own a/c to max altitude and the AVG gave the Zeroes a kicking in return. However it's clear that all he needs to do is nudge and air superiority will be his, the Buffalo is totally outclassed and useless against even Oscars. Some Hurricane squadrons are wending their way towards Burma, and Hurricanes are now entering the pool so maybe I wont have to use buffaloes much longer.
The RN are standing ready to punish him should he attempt early landings, with cruisers at Cox's Bazaar and Hermes at Diamond Harbour. RN reinforcements are fairly significant over the next month or two, as well.

CHINA
The whole Chinese war effort in the northeast is falling apart. 800 AV of Chinese corps were surrounded and wiped out over the last week or so of fighting southwest of Loyang. There's a long string of Jap units headed towards Sian from the east, and to the south there is another great mass of fighting power. Yenen is thinly garrisoned but he's marching right past it towards Sian, I'm hoping to cut him off but we'll see. I ordered some of Chiang's reserves to Sian fairly early in the war, some will start dribbling in over the next month but not enough to be decisive I think. I've ordered a more significant redeployment to that area.

Aside from his schwerpunkt at Sian though things are settling down in China. Nanning remains on the edge but reinforcements are arriving, in fact I think I've over-reinforced massively with about 600 AV coming to relieve a garrison of 100 AV. Artillery duels are going on at Kansienh, little damage, I have 600 AV to his 400. At Chungking I'm desperate to take to the offensive to relieve Sian but the diabolically crap Chinese just can't do it. I'm attempting to advance east from Chungking against lone Japanese divisions but even 3 to 1 odds in AV signal a Chinese spanking. His airforce remains focused on strategic bombing, the AVG have managed to score kills but still, China is well on course to be bombed flat in fairly short order.

DEI/MALAYA/PI
Bataan fell today marking the effective end of the Philippines campaign despite no mistakes on my part I think - the Allied forces retreated in good order to Bataan and even managed a few local victories in so doing. Supply was never a problem. In the end fort levels were too low and Japs too numerous to put up long term resistance. 2000 AV of Japs rolled over 800 AV of Allies at Bataan, game over, and thats a lot of firepower he now has to redeploy.

Singapore is in an even worse state, with about 400 AV vs 2000 odd Japs again. It will fall when he decides to attack. I've already swapped out the commanders for the worst set of chinless wonders the British army can muster, even Gordon Bennett was saved as he's not /that/ bad. [:'(]

There's a fairly tense situation with the Dutch further south. He's sieging the Dutch base west of Kuching, Singakawang I think it is, but is apparently unable to capture it despite repeat shock attacks. He's taking the bases on the eastern edge of the DEI (Manado fell today) but he's apparently a little wary of advance west of Tarakan or south of Ambon. KB was sighted near Manado yesterday, and a force of three Jap battleships is actually in the process of circumnavigating Celebes clockwise. On the way they encountered some PT boats on Celebes and sank most of them and their AGP, some minesweepers at Balikpapan on Borneo and unfortunately for him a mine, which apparently found Yamashiro. A Dutch submarine also torpedoed a DMS.

The ABDA cruiser force retreated to Soerabaja, it's his transports I want ideally, definitely not his battleships. The area is thick with Allied submarines as well, results have been poor initially but I noticed some of my commands had terrible aggression - 25 for an S-boat captain? should be done for cowardice - and I've been giving any sub with working torpedoes the cream of the aggressive crop, so I expect better results now.

Making this even more tense is the presence of two US carriers at Batavia. I'm sure that handled adroitly I could do some real damage to him around the Java/Timor area, but if he works out they are there That Would Be Bad, and I know for a fact he has at least some of his own carriers in the area, near Malaya and also near Ambon.

I'm starting to consider Darwin, which has some Hong Kong refugees which are all now at full OOB after a month and a half off with plentiful supply. I have been ensuring the place is well supplied while I can, but I think on balance I'm not going to reinforce in any other way. If he wants it he can have it, I can't stop him anyway.

SOPAC/CENTPAC
Port Moresby is now quite well garrisoned with 25 P40s and 10 Banshees, all terrible experience unfortunately but they are training. The NZ navy is at Townsville, CA Australia is in the process of sweeping Rabaul where transports were reported.

The US position in CENTPAC slowly improves with every day that passes - supplies passed around, CD detachments deployed. All my initial deployments are finished now, so the main defence line consists of Noumea (navy only) - Efate - Suva - Savaii - Pago Pago - Canton Island (navy only) - Christmas Island - Pearl, with Tahiti being built up just in case. The further south and west you go the less Allied aircraft are about, though even thats changing, Savaii and Pago Pago are about to get 25 Airacobras each. The supply situation is well in hand. Plenty of fuel at Suva, and replenishment TFs are dotted around. Eastern Australia is low on fuel but there are quite a few laden TKs approaching. Another month or two and even that problem will be fixed I think.

Even now I'm still somewhat reluctant to reinforce New Caledonia. My view is that my defences tend to hinge on CD guns rather than numerous troops, so anywhere he can land without facing them is highly vulnerable.

Couple more days have past, I think it's the 20th.

CBI
Chinese forces drove him back from Nanning as predicted, inflicting heavy casualties. Meanwhile near Sian he masses on the far side of the river, buying me time. The first of Chiang's arty units is one hex from Sian now, and will probably prove invaluable. Several Chinese corps were surrounded and wiped out behind Jap lines in the last week, these are now in my reinforcement queue and are badly needed. [:)]
In Burma he's still chasing towards the border with a regiment, the Ghurkas will counter him before he reaches Pegu. 7th Armoured is almost done unloading at Rangoon, if they finally finish unloading I'll move them up too with a view to shredding that regiment just like his armour did to me in Malaya... Surprised that he's attacking with just one regiment, where are the others?
He's backed off sweeping Rangoon, score one for the AVG! This is important given 7th Armoured unloading.
The first hint of reinforcement has arrived at Calcutta, some aviation support allowing me to base aircraft there - the first few squadrons of those are railing over now. 18th British Division is now unloaded at Colombo, so the Ceylon defence is now slightly higher than two divisions. Mainland India is fairly weakly held though I fear.

DEI
Some Jap TF sighted in the Makassar Strait headed west - not sure what it is. Recon suggests carriers but if they are CVs they must have their aircraft stood down or something. I think it might be mini KB, or it might be some CS's misidentified. No Val sightings from the many Allied subs in the strait anyway. I did ponder a course of action and in the end decided a maximal response. The Dutch navy is ordered to sweep the straits on max react. Given the Jap force includes battleships this is a very dangerous maneuver, but there is a reason - the two American CVs left Batavia for the Makassar area a couple of days ago after refuelling, and I don't want them committed until I know what's out there. The Dutch are essentially a recon in force, as their old light cruisers are more expendable than USS Enterprise. That said, I think this game understates battleships and overstates cruisers (light cruisers) especially, and the Dutch are well armed with torpedoes - this were factors in my decision making.

Singapore fell despite a surprisingly heroic resistance, it took several attacks so they did better than the guys at Bataan despite all expectations. Jap aircraft are already based there, so any naval activity north of Java is now totally out of the question, it was one reason why my carriers are slinking southwards again. I've moved a Dutch patrol squadron to Sabang at the north tip of Sumatra to make sure Jap shipping isn't heading north from Singapore towards India/Burma.

SOPAC/CENTPAC
Well, the HMAS Australia raid on Rabaul went off better than I could have hoped. He has Betties there too, but they didn't fly, due to poor recon I suspect. He did get his own back the next day though when two AMCs surprised an Allied convoy unloading at Pago Pago - this was a very high value convoy carrying two Airacobra squadrons, and so the escort included an old cruiser, USS Trenton. Just as well it did! One AK and an Airacobra squadron was sent to the bottom but Trenton drove away the AMCs and toasted one quite badly with 6" shells, given how far from home she is she may well sink.

Oh and how could I forget - yet again some Japanese tanks were trashed. This time on Mindanao where he's cleaning up - a Japanese tank regiment came across a Filipino understrength division, were shock attacked and sent away with their tail between their legs.

He has infantry coming up as well so this is just a temporary setback for him but on the ground especially I take what I can get in the early war. By my reckoning he's lost over 500 tanks - thats destroyed, not disabled - since the war began. [X(]

Well, not good. KB intruded. [:(] Still, it coulda been worse, Lex and Enterprise are not sunk though Lex is out for a while. The worse thing is that the carrier air all diverted to land based airfields and so need to be extricated, no doubt at heavy cost, and the Devastators chose to attack distant AKs and CS's with 500lb bombs, while the battleships within torpedo range were ignored by all but the Dauntlesses, who bombed ineffectually.

Definitely a win for him, though not a crushing one unless he can capitalise on his results.

OK, just done the next turn. Brave Sir Robin ran away, ran away!

Damage was a bit worse than I thought. Enterprise can only make 16 knots, Lexington 24. It's going to be a bit hairy. On the plus side the Dutch airbases near the straits are now jammed with CV aircrew, so a transit through the strait isn't going to be risk free for him. There are a bunch of S-boats and Dutch subs with highly aggressive captains en route too, though subs are never tactically decisive weapons in my experience.

The Dutch airforce is shifted to Soerabaja and readied for combat, they've been training all this time so far.

Elsewhere 7th Armoured Brigade is ashore at Rangoon, the other event of importance this turn, but all my Burmese supply seems to evaporated! [X(] I think it got sucked into China by accident, though I can't see it in China. [&:]

Day 3 of the Battle of Makassar Straits - the USN carriers are headed for the open sea, Enterprise is lagging dangerously though and the enemy are closing in. He does like sweeps with his BBs, if I had some Catalinas to hand I'd teach him the error of his ways - but they are bombproof.

The ABDA cruiser force was more badly mauled than I thought by their brief engagement. CL Danae was the only large ship left in fighting trim and she just got hit by an 8 inch shell off Makassar which means even she is out.

Being the crazy aggressive SoB that I am I've pulled out much of CV Enterprise's escort and sent em in at Kendari, which could be reachable by the end of the night phase. Recon suggests 10 ships there, juicy prize of transports if I can get into gun range. The ABDA cruisers may be out but I think I'm going to replace them with a USN scratch force, as cruiser raids have enjoyed some success in this game so far.

Damn! I sunk Lexington! And I mean me, as it was practically a suicide. She was heading away from Java, sys 40, major flot 35 after taking four bombs. I felt she could handle a day of full speed to make sure she was safe, and oh how wrong I was. Next day she was up to 80 sys and 80 flot, and the day after that she sunk.

An expensive lesson learnt there on what full speed does to badly damaged ships. [X(][:(]

Enterprise paradoxically was in a worse state so I didn't risk it with her, so she's now fine and out of the battle zone. [8|] However all her air complement is now in Java on a one way trip. Not much of an issue as her damage will likely put her out for six months, so plenty of time to build more planes...


Given I had the misfortune of brushing with KB with 2 Allied CVs, I think I got off pretty light. Damage to the enemy was negligible, a lot of 1000lbers bouncing off of battleships, but BB Ise was torpedoed by an S-boat on the way home so she'll be looking at a lot of yard time, and a CS is likely sunk, so it wasn't a total bust.

KB loiters just off Java, after a butchering (24 Dutch planes shot down for 1 Jap) I throttled back their range, so now stalemate ensues there. There are a dozen submarines, all with working torpedoes, in the Java Sea, so I'm hoping eventually one will get lucky. [:'(]

Some glimmer of good news as usual if you look for it, a Nell attack on shipping at Rangoon lost its escort and got slaughtered by the AVG. Mmm, flying zippos. [:D]

The situation in China continues to crumple. Lots of Jap heavy artillery at Chengchow, the death star has arrived. 1000 casualties a day. I ordered the abandonment of the city some days ago, as the place is in danger of being cut off as you can see, to Loyang for now. You can see at Sian a massive Japanese thrust into the Chinese flank, while I've got reinforcements coming in from Chiang's reserve and Ichang into that part of the theatre.

Situation is dire, though, I really can't see northeast China surviving.

1st of February

CBI
He's pushed me out of Moulmein towards Pegu. I am now convinced that despite reinforcement Burma cannot hold. We have parity on the ground pretty much but the problem is the Jap airforce, his air superiority is crushing. Over the last few days he's bombed Rangoon into the stone age and forced me to withdraw my bombers, and spread my fighters out to the other Burmese airfields. The one glint of hope is that the Hurricane seems to be quite an able fighter especially at high altitude, but 16 Hurricanes vs 50 Oscars, 50 Zeroes and 100-150 bombers just doesn't cut it. I'll try and delay at Pegu still while evacuating overland to India I think.

In China the situation worsens by the day, Nanyang falls with huge losses, Loyang is surrounded and occupied by a shell of a force - thats actually good, I want the Chinese corps to be destroyed so I get them back, after a few days of shock attacking they are down to about 50 AV and would need six months to rebuild. Sian has 2000 AV and is currently under siege by 800 AV, but he has far more than that available when he finishes off the front lines. I can't even really retreat, as the Chinese would just torn up on the roads - better to die in place so I get them back. A local success in the south near Kansienh though, one Japanese division foolishly entered a hex containing five Chinese corps and was bloodily thrown out, 5000 casualties.

DEI
Bases fall daily. Palembang has fallen to the Imperial Guard, he took it entirely intact as well. [8|] He's advancing towards Oosthaven and that won't take long. Landings on Borneo continue, Balikpapan fell today, and Celebes with the taking of Kendari.
Some Allied successes though, 3 x CA + DDs which were originally escorting doomed Lexington raided Kendari under Betty's nose and got away with it, sinking half a dozen transports and 2 DDs. Dauntlesses based at on Borneo bombed 2 or 3 more transports.
Baby CV was hanging around east of Soerabaja, not attacking, just goading me into attack. The Dutch have been training in low level bombing since the war begun, and have skills up to around 45 in it now. This Was Their Day! And this was the result.

That might force his CVs to pull back a bit. On the other hand half the Dutch airforce has been annihilated (there was another, less successful strike in the afternoon with heavy casualties), the pools can replace them, but not the low level bombing skills...

Better than I expected from the hapless Dutch airforce anyway.

I evacuated the B17s from Mindanao, they are at Batavia now, night bombing Palembang. He was well prepared, there already are planes based at Palembang, hence the night bombing. No hits yet.

SOPAC/CENTPAC
All quiet except for subs. Reinforcements trickle west. There are 24 heavy bombers in Sydney now, recovering from several long flights. Where to use em! Probably Java, plenty of aviation support and strategic targets in range.

4th February

China is being ground down by artillery, taking 3000-5000 casualties per day at Sian and Loyang. Loyang is surrounded with about 900 AV - somewhat deliberately, as I want those units to surrender and come back. The first of the reinforcements are actually trickling into Sian, but at the rate of damage the Jap heavy artillery units are doing there I don't think they'll make it in time, the place will be a shell by the time they arrive.

I actually attacked at Sian despite gross unreadiness. Its either sit there and be smashed into pieces by artillery, or take a few of them out with you! Results were not bad actually given the poor supply and fatigue/disruption caused by losing 3000 men a day to Somme-like artillery.

The first wave of Japs hit the main defence in Burma at Pegu today. It's certainly a roadblock sufficient to hold them up for now, at least until arty arrives and they pound the Burmese into the dust.

That said, I'm starting to evacuate southern Burma. Everything in Rangoon but the base force is on the march. I think Pegu might buy a bit of time, but thats all. The Japs are beating southern Burma with 100 bombers a day. I've had to move every Allied squadron out to Mandalay or even further back, Rangoons airfield was completely nuked.

Elsewhere its actually fairly quiet. He's begun actively sweeping Batavia with fighters and the odd bomber raid from Palembang has happened. Enough to force me to pull the Dutch all to Soerabaja, and the B17s I have there too. His main efforts seem focused on Sumatra.

An S-boat went for a CL near Ambon but missed. Still, I think thats good, I did some serious reassignment of captains, the S-boats all have extremely competent, aggressive commanders, I think that is responsible for the attack. Better luck next time. Unfortunately the Dutch aren't so lucky, the Jap CVs I dinged off Soerabaja I /think/ went through the Makassar Strait to get home, and in doing so ran over pretty much the entire Dutch submarine fleet. Not one attack. [:(]

7th February.

CBI
In total 7000 casualties a day from Japanese artillery seems to be the score in China. In a few areas I've pushed back with deliberate attacks, casualties in those seem to be about 1:1, of the order of 1500 casualties each. So the Japs are taking a bit of damage, but not much. I expect Loyang to fall soon, and as I allowed it to be surrounded, a whole mass of Chinese corps will surrender - not really an issue as they've been gutted by arty, I want them to respawn in Chungking. Really, arty is ridiculous. I'm amazed nobody noticed when playtesting the game!
In Burma I continue to hold Pegu but it's bending like a reed in the wind. Making matters worse, the Japs have begun unloading a division there by ship - Albacores from Mandalay hit and did some damage to one AP. I've ordered a complete evac of Rangoon, and the Royal Navy has been waiting to pounce so they've been ordered in. KB has been sighted in the Java Sea so 'all' I have to worry about is LBA.

DEI
He's begun landing at Merak. The Dutch a/f has been evacced to Soerabaja, aside from some PT boat action (where 4 Allied PTs were sunk, no Jap losses) it's been unopposed. KB has been covering the landings from the northern coast.
Meanwhile CV Saratoga docked and refuelled at Soerabaja. [:D] Only sent in due to extremely low fuel, Saratoga arrived in the area from Cape Town today.

SOPAC
Bit of a disaster at Rabaul. After the Aussies had an indecisive engagement at Rabaul, I figured, 'need more guns' so ordered the USN cruiser SAG in the area up from Noumea. Linking up with CA Australia on the way they hit Rabaul, 3 CAs plus 4 DDs. They met CA Aoba and some escorts - and got their ass kicked by volleys of torpeodes at 1000 yards. Australia and Pensacola both sunk, Aoba hit many times by shells but not even heavy damage. An absolutely dismal performance. While running away, torpedo armed Betties attacked but missed. Clearly Rabaul is now off limits.
A more traditional campaign is opening up from Port Moresby as I have B26s there now. They've suffered badly at the hands of Zeroes at Finschafen. A single Jap AK is there, resupplying his troops. I have at least arrested his advance here and forced him to bring up support, he's not even taken Lae yet from the Aussies, who have been resupplied themselves.

Pretty quiet, the usual logistic fun, looks like neither of us have designs in this area atm.

Looks like it was either a lone ship at Pegu or he legged it, either way, after the Albacore bombing there's nothing there so the RN sortied in vain.

However USS Saratoga had an excellent raid into the Makassar Strait, right under the nose of KB. She found a Jap convoy with troops loaded, and sent what is apparently the bulk of it the bottom. Excellent, couldn't hope for better, now the question is, can she make it out alive?

Japs are landing at Merak in force, the fall of Java is imminent.

Pucker factor was high today but Saratoga is fine, he probably wisely kept KB around off Merak, supporting his landings. I've moved some Dutch up to try and contain those landings (haha, fat chance, but we gotta try). Saratoga is safely away. I think thats enough CV adventurism for now.

HMS Truant torpedoed a DD at Port Blair, with duds. Pegu continues to hold, he will have to reinforce. Mandalay is being fortified, Chinese corps are there getting ready. Burma will not go gently into that good night. 18th Indian Div is settled in at Chittagong. Catalinas moved to Rangoon to cover the Burmese approaches. USN/AussieNavy are being fixed/regrouping in SOPAC after the Rabaul debacle.

Really the interesting bit is China, but ground war happens slowly so I'm not going to comment further.

February 11th, the Battle of Java rages on as a Dutch PT boat squadron under a brilliant commander (very aggressive, very high naval skill) raid Merak. They dodge a SAG protecting the transports and then get into the amphibious TF, torpedoing two xAPs and shooting a few more up with 0.50 cal fire. Losses are heavy though, 4 out of 10 PTs don't make it back. They have to retreat to Soerabaja as Batavia has been swept of all AGPs.

Dutch recon spotted two cargo ships heading map north in the strait between Sumatra and Malaya. Port Blair seems to have no aircraft yet, so his eyes must be poor around here - so the RN CV + CVL are sortieing, heading north around Port Blair, to see if we can put those two into the bag if possible. He has plenty of bombers but of the runty variety (Sallies, Anns), the Betties seem to be elsewhere, bombing Java.

Latest plan for the defence of China... Uncle Sam has no shortage, he can spare a few.

First time I really had PP to spare due to some errors with ship withdrawal. Shame the patch is out, by the time they arrive they'll be nerfed... ah well. I'm sure they'll help anyway though.

And one for JFBs who don't see the other side of the looking glass when it comes to heavy bombers. 50% out for maintenance after a few days of night bombing, some out for a week and a half. There is no av support or supply shortage, and there is an HQ about - this is ideal conditions.
