Maybe just name one the USS President again and you cover them all.

I'm sorry but I think we went haywire naming ships starting with the Forrestal.  Carriers should have kept names of famous ships or battles, submarines names of fish, etc.  (Ever hear of a fish named the Glenard P. Lipscomb?)  Once we opened the pandoras box of naming ships for political expediency, we may as well have just sold the rights to the corporations.  "Anchors aweigh on the USS Pampers." And for presidents? Well, maybe after they'd been dead for a while or assassinated, but otherwise, its just politics as usual.
Shouldn't you blame SecNav Josephus Daniels for bowing to political pressure by naming the first carrier after an aircraft inventor who obtained research grants from the War Department? [:)]

I remember that movie, though not the title. Don Knots had the lead role IIRC. [:D]

I thought CVN-79 would be named after him.

CVN-79 will be the second ship of the Gerald Ford class, and isn't to enter service until 2018. It doesn't have a name yet.

Crap, I hate the idea of them naming carriers after presidents. Does not matter which one, it just blows.

Frankly, I find it a bit disturbing. Naming one of the most powerful ships in the navy for a past but living president with close relatives deeply active in top-level politics reminds me somewhat of personality cult. I know this is not the case, but still it is close enough to make me uneasy.

Note it isn't a political party issue, I would feel the same with a "USS Clinton" for example.

So, you are opponent of Seydlitz? :)

Yes, so feel free to offer any advice. I've been staying off the forum to avoid the temptation of reading Don's AAR.
