JudgeDredd,
I have just written out the list of CH and CHL radar sites from the disk manual ( page 75 ).

Thx. I know they are in the manual, but I haven't printed it and the game doesn't take too kindly to ALT-TABbing, so using the manual in the game is a bit of a chore. If they could put it in the tooltips, it would be handy. It isn't a game breaker by any stretch...just a "nice to have"

Quick question: I can not find the break point for CH and CHL radar in the manual. I seem to remember 8000 feet from the old BOB. Above 8k was CH; below was CHL. Is 8k still the break between the two radars?

that is HARD coded, all I remember off hand is the low limit, never paid attention to the high limit

CHL has minimum detection of 500, CH minimum of 3000. I took this to mean if I knock out a bunch of CHLs, I can get in under 3000ft without being detected. I could be wrong, but that's how I understood it

sounds right, but you will still be seen and reported by the ground
but getting to the coast is half the idea !

After the destruction of CHs, an indirect road, or zig-zags on the island should be beneficial then. even though they recevied reports from dorect observation, it will still be hard to find your planes.

I always try to take down the coastal radars in btr - so that the stragglers are mostly safe when
they go feet wet.

HARD Sarge took down my radar in the center like you have in one of our PBEM test game. Yes, it does look enticing, but one thing I did do was use the western groups near the gap and the midlands (12 Group I think) to patrol in the gap. Even put twin engine NF's up in the center as a patrol. And found that I could still engage them as the Observer Corp took spotting. While it looks nice, and it does slow down reaction times for responding to the raids incoming it does nothing for hammering the outgoing raids. So, for the RAF, especially in PBEM, they might forgo hitting the raid(s)going in, or decide to engage your cover forces going in and striping them off the bombers. Then when the fighters go home due to lack of fuel, your slower bombers are uncovered and that's when they'll hit them hard.He should and probably will concentrate on your stragglers, your smaller slower formations or just gang attack one formation. If he pulls it off, it will be bloody, if he doesn't, then you'll have lots of damaged A/C not able to fly the next day, which gives him the breathing space to recover.
So, if you're the LW, doing it this way, you're surrendering the initiative to the RAF and not helping your cause. You should, IMHO, only go after and down the radars that cover your form up areas, and nothing more. You should be getting him up and in the air often to tire his pilots, damage his A/C and force him to fight on your terms. This will put the pressure on him over time to pick and choose which raids to hit and with any luck reduce your losses and increase the target damage payout. Anything else as the attacker, such as your planning, wastes, again in my honest opinion, missions, valuable pilots, and does very little to help bring him to bear.
You might ask HARD Sarge, about that tactic and how it worked for him in our 2 test PBEM. Again, this is my opinion, and I"m sure the other Veterans could possible be at odds with my advice. Like you I had to learn really fast and suffer some interesting lessons before I caught on how to fight as the RAF...
But, if you're succeeding with this tactic, then I would continue to do so...
