GGWbtS is the best of the three IMHO. All three are great games, but GG scores in two really important respects for me. First it has a 'feel' of the Civil War that the other two don't have in quite the same way and second it plays much faster with losing any depth.
I'll second the love for
GG's War Between the States, and for pretty much the same reasons as what you listed.
It really does have that Civil War feel -- for me, atmosphere & immersion goes a long way when it comes to gaming -- and is fairly easy to pick up and play without sacrificing much in the way of depth. Also, the AI is a pretty good opponent, which is something I always appreciate in any strategy- or war-game.
Of course, if you're really wanting tactical battles in addition to the strategic layer, then FoF might indeed be a better choice. Personally, I can take or leave it when it comes to battles in the Civil War era, but different strokes for different folks.

Yes - If you want tactical battles, AND need to settle for one out of these three obviously great titles, FoF is your choice, and the tactical battles are great fun too!

Kingstuart go to youtube and watch some of the videos posted there for FoF. They'll give you a good feel for the gameplay. However be advised the tactical TBS battles are not PBEM, if that is something that interests you.

Add my name to the list of votes for FoF. I've been playing non-stop for about two months and I feel as if I've only scratched the surface of all the strategic options. For me, one of the most enjoyable parts of the game is being able to purchase new guns for individual brigades. Nothing like being able to buy my boys some shiny new Spencer Rifles, or that sexy new Heavy Rodman gun for the artillery!
Simply stated, FoF is the best $40 I've spent for a computer wargame since Uncommon Valor.

It's FOF for you all the way.
But AACW is a fine game too.
Both games were great when they came out and have been patched to near perfection over the years.
And they are very different, so you'll get two unique playing experiences from them.
As others have said, buy both. You won't regret it.

Exactly what it is for me. Decisions to be made. Who gets what. Not enough to go round. None of this research and nationwide updates...you have to choose and choose carefully who gets the upgrades.
That reminds me...after my system rebuild, it hasn't been put back on...must rectify this immediately. Haven't played it in some time but for me it's easy the best of the ACW games.
Good luck choosing though, 'cos Erik is correct...they are all gems.
