 2 wolverines in the South are holding out with a small group of airborne and have just killed a pziv and probably a stug too... we're continuing to flush out the remnants of the US defence on slaughterhouse hill but the going, everywhere, is slow indeed. Breakdowns are starting to take their toll. There is not a great deal of ground left to take but Goblin is holding onto it very well!

one hollywood wolverine killed, the other continues to shoot out guns of pzivgs!, we're creeping forward again at last... unbelievably slaughterhouse hill is still infested with US airborne! We are now going to expend all efforts to extinguish the USA forces... no mercy!

Despite killing a Panther, this is not going well. American morale just plummeted when an Elephant was spotted, almost to the line. A Tiger, and at least one other Panther, plus numerous PzIV's and a Brummbaer do not bode well for us. Not the terrain for this! Commited the last few blades that the engineers sent up from the beaches, but I am afraid it is in vain.:(

Finally, a good round! My Sherman Dozers flank and kill a Tiger! To top it off, my AB on the north slope of SH Hill claim another Tiger! I redirected my tubes to hammer his onboard stuff, and my spotters say I'm getting kills! I'm still in trouble, but that makes me feel better.:D

**** that Goblin! I lost another panther to an AT gun and all I managed to nail was a dozer... argh!

Don't say 'all I managed to nail was a dozer'! Those dozers are a very significant chunk of my power, and you should be happy!

I had another good round. My Rangers have fought off repeated attacks in a tiny stand of woods on hellcats back map edge. They are led by Sgt Farmer, with seven kills! CMH coming up for him, if he survives.

The fight on SH Hill is pretty quiet, primarily because no one can see thru the pall of smoke and flame.

The fight in the orchard/ farmfield has stagnated.

The center is a hell of exploding/burning vehicles, and dying men. What makes it so bad is the fact that its open! Yuck. The defense is being run out of a tiny little orchard, in the middle of that open area, and hellcat has blasted it every round for who knows how long!

Goblin- A Goblin kills or is killed:mad:

I might be turning this around. I got a coupla PzIV's that round, plus my Rangers got an FO. I lost a 76 to an Elephant, and am wondering where his secton mate(s) is(are). The center is seeing all of the fighting, with everywhere else quiet.

I got another one of them '76s, now where's them dozers?

Mercifully a panther repaired and is en route to cause some trouble... I still have 1o or so AFVs sitting immobilised tho... :(

It's desperate now... the only rule of engagement is 'search and destroy', kill or be killed, do or die!

10 or so AFV's immobilized?!? Goodness, if they ever get up and running, I'm in way more trouble than I am now! I found a Tiger. Not good news at all. I ran.

this can't be happening man! my newly repaired panther breaks down again, another immobilised by a dozer! a dead dozer I'm happy to say! AND a pzivg is immobilised by another dozer!!! grrrrr

It's a scene of madness now... these are the dark hours... My Hummells went ranger hunting in the back yard on direct fire... wow :)

if only something would repair...!

My 155 HMC's avenged those Rangers, destroying a Hummel! This turn I also claimed an Elephant, a Panther, and two Stugs! It is obvious that hellcat's breakdowns are killing him! (Actually, I'm killing him, those breakdowns are letting me do it piecemeal:D ).

Hey buddy, that Tiger is next, unless you run now. I'm not letting that other Elephant go though.;)

Soft 0 / 9

You too hellcat!!

USA OOB:

1-Company M4A1(76)W Shermans (3 still alive)
2-Airborne Companies
3-3 inch ATG sections
6-M29C Weasels (for ATG's)
1-Platoon Quad .50 AA guns
3-Ranger Platoons (8 infiltrated)
3-Ammo Dumps
2-Sections M4 81mm MMC's
1-Platoon M12 155mm GMC's
4-60mm Mortar Jeeps
1-105mm FG Battery
1-155mm FG Battery
1-8 Inch Howitzer Battery

As soon as Slaughterhouse hill started, I yelled for help from the beaches!

2-M4A1 Dozer Platoons (1 tank alive)
3-Wolverines (0 alive)
1-8 Inch Howitzer Battery

My reinforcements were influenced by what I thought might be locally available. I pictured both 8 inch batteries as Cruiser guns in the channel.

I honestly thought this was a loss. If hellcat's armor had arrived all at once, it would have been. He still had vehicles broken down everywhere! A Brummbaer, a Tiger, several half-tracks, a Hummel, and a Pz IV were on that list, IIRC. He had me, but those mechanical breakdowns were my best warrior!

Excellent job, hellcat, and boy, do you improve VERY quickly!;)

Goblin- A Goblin is triumphant:eek: :) :D

Man what a battle! I was quite consident during the purchase that I had enough armor to deal with any US threat and was probably quite right except for factoring in the breakdown ratio which at one point towards the end I had a dozen primary AFVs sitting there immobilised in stupid positions where they could have no impact on the outcome. For example when Goblins started shelling my orchard, I had just that turn broken down 1 of my Brummbars there.

I had also purchased enough infantry I thought, especially as I feared airborne landing and wanted to be able to cover enough of my ground, something I also did with my vehicles, some starting very far back to reflect the idea of my force in movement and also so as not to bunch up... of course, moving this extra distance to the front caused some of my breakdowns, even when repaired some would breakdown immediately again. However, breakdowns aside there was more that went wrong.

Slaughterhouse Hill in the north was almost entirely forested and my early recon quickly found Goblin to be there in force. His bazookas being particularly effective here! I had a mechanised Infantry co nearby and I did stop and look at the map considering whether to bother fighting it out in there or giving up the ground... However, letting Goblin take it and shoot from the treeline into the open ground around it did not seem wise. So I committed my infantry here. I figured there fight would soon erupt elsewhere anyhow and I would be able to take it, he can't have a whole company in there... but he did, or near enough a whole company of airborne. Slaughterhouse hill became the main artillery focus for the first part of the battle and it was with shock as I saw my mechanised infantry company disintegrate under the shellfire and against the airborne. My huge infantry losses mostly took place on this hill and even at the end of the game (turn 24 or so) 15 hexes are still burning! In the belief that it would be cleared sooner or later I committed more and more infantry into the fray but never took it all. We both lost a lot of tanks here and me most of my halftrack losses... I could have pulled back my north flank back to a hill almost parallel with my rear VH and at the time that seemed an extreme measure... perhaps I should have even if it mean't relocating my arty parks too.

There were two roads leading West the northernmost one running along the southern fringe of slughterhouse hill. Here I hit mines and they marked my highwater mark along that road, a series of ridges with AT guns, mgs and the ever-present airborne made further progress impossible. Just South of here, between the two roads I count about 15 wrecks of both sides, where a running armour battle took place in the smoking hell.

The other road ran through an orchard and again I was stopped here by mines and another 'evil ridge' that was well stocked with AT. Between here and the South of the map is where the other big tank battles occured in restricted visibility. From about the middle of the game a lot of arty fell here too.

Then there is the matter of my reinforcements... Goblin's rangers managed to pretty much wipe out my entire infantry reinforcement in ambushes that had to be experienced to be believed. In the end I think only three squads actually made it to the front and a running battle ensued where I tried, vainly, to flush them out and find the rest before they found my arty park or rear vhs.

In all, Goblin held onto to some good ground and I should have forgone my aggression and formed up a second line of defence... by the time I realised this it was too late, my infantry was committed and it would have mean't leaving broken down vehicles vulnerable when I was hoping (against hope) they would repair.

I lost a lot of vehicles to infantry, Goblin is a real master of handling his airborne and rangers also (as well as being an artillery god - how gets such good use from his arty I don't know).

A vicious fight indeed! a lot of fun too!

I had one entire company go up SH Hill, hellcat! I had a platoon or so survive. They were the rear platoon, and the first to retreat. I moved my ATG's so much that I lost count. This was partly due to your smoke barrages at the beginning, partly to make it look like I had a ton of them, and partly to get them where a percieved breakthrough was coming. I think they only killed a few vehicles, but it was nice to have them!

I again wish to state my lack of use for mechanized infantry in most any battle. I don't think the price of halftracks are worth it. They die easily, cost too much, and their weaponry is relatively ineffective. If you had used those points for trucks, and then spent the extra on more tanks or infantry....

I love your shopping list! A little of everything. So hard to choose later in the war!

those AT Guns had a big 'fear factor' for me though and that definitely made them worthwhile... Looking at the map I can't believe I got so close to one of your arty parks...

sigh - if I had another company of infantry :)

I like the later years for 'shopping purposes'. I didn't just want to buy tiger co, panther co you know, I thought I'd try and make a scratch force and vary it as much as possible (as well as try out a few things of course).

I agree with you on that halftrack issue, by the end not one was moving!
