I am afraid I am going have to disagree with you, Schatten. Your point about their vulnerability is correct to a degree but the point is not that they could go toe-to-toe with the KB and win (they wouldn't, you would lose them), it is that you would have to commit resources early on to destroying them. If you did not, they would be free to interfere and break your momentum in other areas. The reason to do PH attack is that you get a free virtually no risk shot at taking the majority of the US primary surface combantant fleet out of the game for 6 months and if you are really lucky, a shot at two CVs at sea.
I understand your concern about the subs and I typically devote a significant amount of air on the opening turn to a Port strike at Manila to sink ships including subs (I am not too concerned about Allied Air in PI. It is doomed anyways). Given the amount of older subs there coupled with the unreliable torps and the withdraw schedule of a portion of the boats, I feel that the sub threat from them is managable. I suppose it is a difference in styles but I personally assess the greater threat to be at Pearl on the opening turn and thus apply the assets against it.

not more, after over a Year of Patrol Duty and since i change at last the TF Commander (Captain of the TF Flagship) they equal to the Destroyer´s and AM´s in Exp (few points fewer).
Still they cannot find any Sub and abort without Search (the Y´s) or cannot find it and abort after Search (the SC´s)
For me its clearly a bug, especially since the same Ships as part of a TF Escort (Transport or Cargo) find and attack Sub´s.
Something like the fact that the first Ship in a ASW TF (if the Sub attack first) never can find any Sub...the second ship at Screen does the Search and attack work.
Try it and build some ASW TF of 4 Ships with 1 DD and 3 AM....if a Sub attack or the TF finds a Sub you see for few Seconds the DD as first Ship that cannot find anything, than a Second Ship appears and do the Serach work and attacks the Sub.
This is the same thing if 4 DD´s or 4 AM´s in TF but you see it better with 1 DD and 3 other Ship´s.
The same is that the 3rd and 4th Ship in the TF never ever search and attack...its everytime the second one at Screen (its now March 43 amd it was so since 41).
For me it´s as said clearly bug´s.....2 Ships per ASW TF is enough for attack, 4 have mayby more detection, hard to say but fpr attack 3 of 4 ships useless.

Do you think it might be better to have 2 ship ASW task forces ?

not sure, since it may affect the detection of subs if 4 ships search for them
but in attack-question 2 enough...even 1 would be enough except it goes hit by torpedos, the other dont attack anyway.

Yeah, the Kiso xAKL do seem to have a pretty good ASW rating. What do you guys think, would it make any sense to convert almost every one of them to PB's (a few ACm and AMc also)? That would make short work of the resource convoy escort shortage, I think. They don't have very big cargo holds after all.
Well, atleast that's what I did in my GC [:)]

I use Kiso/SC combo teams. Kiso class has ASW rating of 3, that is one dual and one single ash-can launcher and it has endurance of 4000, which allows it to refuel the SC's on patrols zones. Problem with Kiso class PB is, that it starts with experience under 20 as it is a converted ocean trawler in all practical purposes. It has to be left to patrol zone for week or a month to collect experience. SC's come in multiple forms, but I think it is the fast ones are the ones that really do some damage, so 19 kts SC and three Kiso's is my standard ASW patrol.
Working together they are pretty effective in sending subs either bottom or back to base for repairs.

With some Guad scenario experience under my belt, the E ships seem to do ok getting hits.
