Thompson or Bren, both would be great

I own a souped up AR15 but somewhat common to what you are offered.

I have fired a MP5 and a Thompson. As stated by others the MP5 is soft and easy to shoot. The Thompson was a blast, just remember short bursts. Shooting zombies will be cool. Work on those head shots.

Carried a SAW in the Army. Awesome and fun to shoot. Never saw a SAW that jammed (with live rounds) with proper PM. Ammo will be expensive! Wear earplugs!!! (I yell, because I'm deaf lol)

Never shot a Bren.

Used the MP5 in the Army. Slick weapon, but very tame.

XM15 = M4 Fun to shoot, but kind of yawner like the MP5.

Never shot a Thompson, but man do they look fun to shoot!!!

If that's all on your list, pick the Thompson!

If you have other choices, look into the SCAR. Ranger Regiment was just issued these. I'm sure they shoot like the M4, but it would be neat to shoot. Also, the .416 Chey-Tac sniper rifle.

Anything .50 BMG would be really cool, too, but ammo is going to break the bank.

For those of you out there with more first person hands on experience with automatic weapons than I have, I seek your wisdom:

For Christmas, my wife got me a gift certificate for a local gun shop / range to rent an MG .....

Do the Thompson....It's the romantic in me.[:D] I have a semi-auto version, and it's great fun to shoot. But it doesn't climb the way a full auto does.

..And be sure to bring a violin case and some spats.  [:D]

I personally would opt for the SAW. Only the SAW and the Bren are light MGs, the others are SMG. The Bren would be fun too, as it saw quite a bit of service around the world, is still used today...and was in PTO as well!

I was a M60 gunner. SAW was after my time, but anyone who humped a 60 and a pack in the field would appreciate the weight change.

Try the Thompson. I got to shoot one on full auto , as mentioned it feels smooth, but boy does it climb. Not a kick really, just a steady motion up and right that these inexperienced hands didn't know how to handle. But fun.

I started as a Pig gunner! What a great gun! I was sad to change over to the 240, but she served distinctively for more than 40 years.

I appreciated the weight change when I moved to the line as a 249 gunner, but mostly because the ammo was lighter.

I can see where it might. Just so we don't spread any misconceptions about the America being the wild wild west (so just the wild west), let's be clear that you don't rent a machine gun like you rent a movie, promising to return it the next day. You rent it at the range, shoot it, and hand it back in. You don't get to leave with it. That's not to say that certain aspects of our gun policies won't still appear absurd to others, if not absurd in fact.

@Byron13, I certainly didn't intend this thread to be a defense of our Constitution, Bill of Rights or existing gun laws to those (that have been long since green dotted by myself) from other countries. But your clarification may be helpful to those unfamiliar with the idea of gun rental. Do you have any recommendations?

try the MP5, don't have to fire it. Just drop it and it will do it itself. No matter if the safety is on.
When i was in the Army, a guy ripped a bunch of backpacks apart with it (weren't worn by people, the backpacks were used to create a firing position) during training exercise. fired it myself. easy to use, wonderful. But lacks a little punch

The Bren gun and the Thompson were both use in the war...

Common sense would dictate not to make fun of someone with a loaded firearm. [:-]

Or maybe you have the mentality that the only ones allowed to arm themselves are the ones that control you. [;)]

To the OP: The M60 was my girl in the army. The SAW was being phased in when I was leaving. I occasionally carried the M16A1/M203 combo. If it were up to me the Tommy gun would be my choice.

To all you former pig gunners out there, I humped the M-60 for a while too.
The M249 was after my time in the service, but I understand the M-249 isn't that much lighter than the old M-60 (.223 ammo is lighter - but then .223 ammo isn't as effective as .308 either).
Yep, humping an M-60 with 400 belted rounds along with the rest of your gear wasn't fun, but the venerable pig was a good weapon.

For fun to shoot - Try rapid firing an M-1 Garand or an M-14. That's shooting with authority! (if you can't hit with those - don't blame the rifle!)

If you are looking for the sheer visceral fun of firing a machine gun, probably the best choice on your list below would be the M-249 on account of the large supply of belted ammo it could burn through (but .223 is just such a light round).

If you want to feel the power of a serious tripod mounted belt-fed MG, look around for an outfit that will let you fire an MG-42, an M-60, a Browning M-1919A-4, or a Browning HBM2 .50*****
Those are all in a different club to what's on your list, and they can be rented - at least with a trip to Nevada I believe.

If I had my druthers, I'd certainly want to fire the MG42 or one of the Browning .30s from WWII (M4A6 comes to mind). Alas, these are not options. I'm seriously considering the following from their original list and need some help whittling it down.

1. M249 SAW (5.56)
2. Bren (.303)
3. H&K MP5 (9mm)
4. XM15 (5.56)
5. Thompson M1 with 50-rd. drum magazine (.45)

What would you recommend?

Ain't it great having a spouse that supports hobbies? [&o] I think I'll keep her.

No, most of us have a Assault Rifle of type G-3 in our homes, and around 3000 live rounds.
This is handed out to most of the conscripts after basic training, and we keep them in our homes until we have reached the age of 58.

So we have more access to 'un-modified' live army assault rifles and access to thousands of rounds... more access then I think Evan the average American got.


But we can not go out on a shop and buy firearms unless we got a 'hunter training, special safety education and a license and we can not go and rent a mashie gun anywhere, and we can not go out and buy a pistol.
If we want to revolt than we got access to the assault rifle and the thousands of rounds already handed out to us by our own government.
The intention with the easy access is to ensure fast or nearly instant mobilization in the event of a war. It has been this way since 1648.
I think this is done also in some other European countries.

This said, let me add that we hardly have any gun violence!
