Sins was pretty much my intro to RTS / 4x. I really like Sins and there is a demo available to try. Keep in mind the game engine and units have changed a bit since it was released.
Sins is grand but it's an RTS so the focus is on creating a fleet of ships and the support structures for those ships. The interaction with the opponent is focused on war, either preventing it if you're not ready or waging it if you are. As much as I like Sins I'd say my disappointment with it is that it is an RTS. It is a very good RTS and is the best at in it's genre IMHO.
I hope that DW, while being real time, will be more of a civilization game and that war will be more of an option rather than an inevitable outcome.

I'd say with 20 races plus pirate factions war in much more an inevitability than an option. Not everybody will be playing nice together.
Good Hunting.

New Armada 2526 is bad. Interfeys is crappy, technology tree is simple, limited types of ships. Moving ships is pain and battles arent very funny. This game lookmore like Imperium Galactica 2. But worse. Also game look like crap. They add some 3d and cg animated scenes for no reason whatewer. I mean this look like crap andgameplay dont save it becoze gameplay is bad too. Rent it first or play demo (if it exist). I like orginal Armada(2525) more. Much more.
You and I seem to be the only ones not drinking the cool-aid. Armada is a nice try, but yeah all of you said plus the tactical combat is horrible with bad ai. Trying to change the camera angle, and it snaps back. So frustrating.

War is a part of those games, and it is ok, as long as diplomacy has a meaningful significance. I hope I use the right english words?!

You can add me on the list of gamers who do not like Armada 2526.
I still can't believe how goofy most of the stuff looks, especially the humans.[8|]

Me either. Armada might be interesting to play strategically, but tactical part of it is horrific. Never liked space strat games that lack controllable, well-though and visually appealing tactical combat.
SOTS and MOO2 are the most 'perfect' 4x space games IMHO.

Exactly. Diplomacy, trade, alliances and war. I want options like that if they are possible. A living breathing universe.

I agree... they are the best... but MOO is number one.[:'(]
Moo is the beginning and the end of 4x space games.

How is diplomacy in MOO? Does it exist and is the AI good at it?

Diplomacy in MoO?
Yes it is.
And AI is good at it.
You should read this for MoO I.
Great written tutorial.
http://www.warpcore.org/~sirian/moo1/tu ... tut-1.html
Pages about diplomacy:
http://www.warpcore.org/~sirian/moo1/tu ... ut-10.html
http://www.warpcore.org/~sirian/moo1/tu ... ut-11.html
In MoO II AI is more similar to AI in Civ games. Mechanics are similar too. Actually MoO 2 is Civ in space.
In SOtS diplomacy is rather symbolic(with expansions) and AI isnt very bright but can sometimes make nasty suprise.
I like MoO I more than MoO II. And SotS is good game but not great.

My favorites are MOO, MOO2 and GalCiv2. I find Sins very good also. I don't like SOTS that much, but I only played the vanilla anyway. I'm more in favor of micromanagement, that is why I love MOO2.
I'm giving Armada 2526 a chance, now with the new patch out (v1.0.2.4) the game became better. If you want to check out a first impressions I did about Armada 2526 check:

MoO 1 seems to old for my taste graphics wise. I might be interested in MoO2. Are there any peaceful victory options?

I wonder if anyone here played the very old 4X game for Mac called "Pax Imperia", it was the greatest!
EA's "Imperium" was also very cool.

Yes any MoO have diplomatic victory options. If you get 2/3 votes on galactic senate you won. If anybody gets 2/3 win. But if you lose that way you can always refuse to acknowledge this and start last war. You against all allied races.
At last in MoO I you can do it. Dont remember if you can throw last war in III, pretty sure that you can do it in II.

Of course, if you've seen the screenshots then you will realise the graphics are not top notch at all,
That ^ AND rts = no buy might as well stick to SoasE, but, I don't like it either. These real time games are getting to be a dime a dozen. Where's the good old Reach for the Stars and games that don't take a lifetime to play one of them out?

Oh yes, Reach for the Stars. What a great production. Great editor, almost endless possibility to expand campaign and technology tree. "Wasted" many hours with it. Simple and addictive. Thank heavens that Matrix released 2 patches to fix The Enter of Klaa-Kleen Campaign (which SSG accidentally forgot [:'(]).
I'm also not a fan of RTS, but let's face simple fact: RTS holds ~90% of the strategy market and there is nothing we can do about it. Today only REALLY hardcore stuff is developed as a Turn Based Strategy (*cough* WiF is TBS only because it is in development for past 20 years *cough* [:D][:D]). Pretty much 4X genre is last unexplored so far territory for RTS. DW could be first major production.

Sins is generally considered a 4X RTS by the gaming community, so I wouldn't say DW is the first major production.[:'(]
Anyway, I think that many RTSes are too fast-paced and simply become annoying clickfests. Why games like Starcraft are so popular I will probably never understand, but then again The Sims is the fourth best-selling video game franchise ever, so there's a lot I don't get about popularity.[:D]
