Thanks Jeff I may up the accuracy for Shiyo a little although those losses are not a millions miles out.
Jeff apart from the initial landing the trick is to keep the army resupplied as it battles its way through the cities and mountains.

Andy, I dont have a problem keeping the Kyushu bases supplied, captured enough ( app 50k+) at each base captured and now have 6 x 50 AK convoys coming in from CONUS. My USMC thrust across the mountains was my only risk (I'm more Wellesley than Buonaparte) and the quick fall of the base made them safe and I airlifted billions of supply in from Okinawa.
I have to manually route them as even though I have 400+ Fighters on Iwo & Chichi Jima enough kamikaze leakers get through to hit 1-2 ships, Emily makes a great Kamikaze and not many survive a hit.
The clearing of Kyushu is about over, only Fukuoka is left and I have better than 1-1 with my holding force and my siege train moving up from Nagasaki/Sasebo so it will be about a week before the island is mine.
Doing a lot of recce at the moment, i would be happy to take on 50k troops at the landing site, I'm looking for a weak spot and think an invasion in the Sea of Japan might find a back door. To do this I have to hit the Korean bases, Pusan seems a strongpoint for aircraft.
Palembang has reverted to the stone age, sick of the super IJN attacks (with Kaiten), I have used arriving heavy bombers which didnt have space in the PI or on Formosa to hit it back to 100 damage for airfield & ports, at my spies tell me that though I often run into 1-2 defending fighters.
I am also hitting Shanghai port & airfield, a lot of the IJA is in China and I am concerned about them shifting back home, though no ships are getting through my recce showed lots of auxilery aircraft, maybe transports??

Hi Jeffk: I've found Palembang to be a royal pain. I'm due for a large influx of troops into
Singapore soon, and when they arrive, we are on the road to Palembang to eliminate
that place. I've been mining Shanghai and some other Chinese coastal cities in the hopes
of gaining some cheap Jap. casualties. How are your CVs getting on? I'm not going
to use mine till I hit the main isl. I've got about half my cv carrier groups switched to Bearcats and will hold there. Also, my first P-80 group has arrived.

My CV are now venturing out, the Air Force has caused over 12,000 aircraft losses so the IJAAF is thinning out.
As I mentioned, I sold my Bearcats to the French & Thais, I'm happy with F4U-4s etc which are 95 % as capable but have 50% more hitting power.
I have a FG & a FS with the P80 (Andy, where's the Meteor F3 or Vampires??) Racking up lots of kills though the targets are hard to find.
Maybe Andy would consider a FS equipped with them at start, the UFAAF had trialled them in Italy and I believe they were on the boats to the PTO ?

Only in early days, but i think their bad maintenance rating, sweeps by 200+ P51H and bombing of their engine factory has kept them on the ground. There is also a Me163 equivalent as well.

Ground movement in AE is so slow, it takes forever to move around anything larger than Betio!!
Holding attack at Fukuoka and the end at Nagasaki/Sasebo. A turn or two to lower fatigue then the Siege Train moves on Fukuoka.
Then Ill garrison the bases and work out a target for the next Invasion.

Time is passing quickly, and some of the plans laid by men are being replaced by a far more circumspect plan laid by mice.
Late Feb 46 and Kyushu is now subject to Allied rule, plus the Allied armies have taken Shimonoseki and are moving toward Hiroshima.
The Allied attacks on Fukuoka continued and the base fell on 7 Feb 1946.

21 Divisions plus a lot of support !!! (Not 1 IJA soldier escaped from Kyushu) And the Allied forces are still growing.
The highway from Shimonoseki enters Kyushu 1 hex south of Fukuoka, the IJA did very little to reinforce Kyushu and I was moving forces along the East coast to move into Fukuoka. There where approx 25k IJA in Shimo. Then a force of about 5k arrived on Kyushu, faced by 2 Tank bns and some arty ("some arty at this point could be 4-5 Bns or Corps Groups!!!). Next turn another 20k of IJA arrived (The force was a Division, a Brigade and some support), luckily there were 2 US Inf Divs a day away so the little counterattack went nowhere. I decided to attrit the IJA force rather than push it back, recce on Shimo. was showing 2500, assuming some of this was a base force I planned to drop an airborne force to take the base.
This took a bit to organise, and the siege of Fukuoka was continuing.
Finally I dropped 503 Para & 11th Airborne and got a 1-1 shock attack, most of the IJA were base troops but despite continued drops I couldnt take the base. The Paras continued to hold, reinforced by 541 Para, unitil Fukuoka was cleared, the small IJA force on Kyushu wiped out and 4 Divisions crossed the straits onto Honshu.
Time for a break, as Andy implied, keeping a force of about 30 Divs supplied to do the continual attacks plus an Air Force of about 1000 airframes chews up supply. My supply convoys have started arriving, keeping me in the green but each is a careful task to route away from Emily & Betty.
I also sacked my USMC Generals and took on a more "Monty" mode.
I gathered another CV force at Guam and sent them north, totalling just over 1000 aircraft, at least half fighters, 12 CV, 6 BB, 1 CB, 6 CA, 9 CL, 3 CLAA & 38 DD (all the top AA ratings). Maybe I went 1-2 hexes too close, but on 18/2/46

The attacks continued all day, the badly battered and based Imperial airforces , co-ordinating raids from up to 8 bases managed to put up just over 3550 sorties, probably 3000 of the against the CV group, and suffered just over 1500 losses. They wore down the CAP until no aircraft could make the air.
2 CV where put out of action, but the complete force managed to clear (stagger) out of the area.
I had been looking at an Invasion of Matsue on the Sea of Japan, recce was showing about 15k IJA. But after these kamikaze attacks which it appears will always get through I cant see how an Invasion could make it through the Tsushima straits and into the japanese backyard. So Monty has decided that a ground assault will do this (and Matsue will fall just as quickly anyway) with 2 thrusts, I'm unsure yet of the major push, 1 along the Sea of Japan coast, the bases are further apart and less defended and a second along the Pacific coasts where the bases seem to be in each hex. Lots of thinking to do!

April 1, 1946
I've decided to end the game as it was getting to be a recreation of WW1 rather than the PTO.
Plus I was getting bored and wanted to restart with new ideas and approaches.
I played v2 which had a few problems, 1 of which should be a game breaker in PBEM in that I couldn't satisfy the withdrawals so therefore didnt have any PP to release about 10-12 Divisions.
In the end I didnt do a second invasion, my Armies have just taken Okayama & Tottorri and are resting before hitting Kobe & Osaka/Kyoto. Their capture is inevitable, there isnt enough space to manouvre so its a base by base slugging battle.
the major interest in the last months is ensuring you have CAP over your TF's, its accepted that some leakers get through, but when they are Kamikaze it can easily be fatal to your shipping. The IJAAF has claimed 4 CV, 1 CVL & 18 CVE!!! All my CV are safe, I scuttled the CVL and have lost 13 CVE, they are kamikaze magnets and have tinfoil armour so have contributed their airgroups to the land campaign and are providing dolphin feeding grounds off the Kyushu coast.
The Allied air forces just keep plugging away, they have claimed over 22,000 kills, against just over 6,000 losses with about 45% OP losses.
The game has been great fun, with a lot of suspense as you land your troops, fight off 200+ raiders and organise your Armies, Air Forces and Fleets. the problem now is the Land Combat part of AE isnt as good as the Air & Naval routines.
IMHO, the Japanese gets too many aircraft, and seems to be building them as fast as they get knocked down despite a lot of damage to production and a lot of the Homeland occupied. From memory, they start with 15,000 airframes, I thought IRL they had around 5000 at surrender, maybe around 10,000 by Sept 1 is closer to the mark.
The IJ seems to park TF's, It started with CVTF then SCTF and now what ever they can find in hex 100,58 where they seemed attract some shells and torpedoes.
Allied CV are vulnerable, you just cant keep up enough CAP to cruise off the Honshu coasts, I would be careful about using them as IRL.
My B29 did a good job, I thought my A26 & B25 did a more effective job but without the B29 combat results I cant be sure.
My best fighters were the P-80, but the P-51H wasnt far behind. Of course sheer numbers can win a lot of battles if your aircraft is top rate as well. I also thought highly of the Tempest F2 & Spitfire XIV, their short range saw them fighting defensively so probably saw less combat. At sea, the Corsair F4U-4 was fantastic, the Bearcat & Fireball did OK but miss heavier gunpower, i might mod the Bearcat to 4 x 20mm and see if that makes them the fighter to fit their reputation.
On the japanese side, their top 5 pilots are flying 5 different airframes, I dont think they get enough respite to build experience to compete on level ground, I even found my Mossie VI taking out the japanese J8M1 & Ki202 rocketplanes(Me163 clone). The Ki201 (Me262 clone) has 39 claims and 90+ lost in A-A, pilot exp of 22 doesnt help.
So, its been great, and maybe better PBEM as you get a chance to fake out the defenders or save up your aircraft for a massive Kamikaze assault on the invaders, but thats for others to enjoy. I hope Andy gets the Allied AI to run well on this, it could be interesting fighting them off!
I'll download v3 now and see if it runs better, and get back to Scen 1 which is around July 42 (for about the 5th time) and buy Battles for the Bulge and get back into Bombing the Reich............

Hi JeffK:
Do you think more than two major landings on diff islands is feasible?
Thx.

I dont see it as a problem.
In the air you need to kill off the Kamikaze problem, this means taking out thousands of airframes, but if you get a firm base in the Home Islands you should be able to provide LBA CAP.
You will lose ships, especially the paperclad CVE, but you start with 1000's of ships so you should win any battle of attriton.
On land you should also be able to land enough force at any place except maybe Tokyo Bay, I felt the japanese army was brittle and a lot of those men your recce counts are support troops.
Biggest problem in an AI game is not being able to "fake out" the enemy. Landing on Kyushu should have drawn in something from Honshu, it was only when I got to Fukuoka I got a reaction and it left a vacant spot at Shimonoseki to be picked up easily by an airborne attack. A real opponent might have reacted harder and made sure he kept the rear garrisonned.
If you do try for a second island, make sure your troops are fresh and their powder is dry, and smash them with a sledge hammer.

Japanese are brittle by this stage a full strength US Div has a LOT more arty and support weapons than Japanese units AND squad firepower is about 2 or 3 times higher - basically 2 jap Divs will get killed by every US Div and in a long drawn out fight with lots of fire phases on consecutive days maybe even more

No, I'm not really a "detail" freak, do too much of that at work.
I have also started a 2nd game and saved over the save files.
But I dont think they were too bad, my CVE (as I harp on) lost about 15, mostly kami strikes, about 6 CV were in the shop back at Pearl, I didnt lose any.
Warning (for both sides) I had a peek at the japanese side and they were claiming 3 CV sunk, while getting flot damge about 50 they were safe. Dont trust any pilot, at any time, to report the truth!!
I lost a fair amount of AK, my resup got a little close to uber Betty Kamikaze and one convoy got badly hit, then I moved their route from passing Iwo Jima to Tinian & Okinawa.
I didnt lose too many APA/AKA, guarded them carefully and AP's carry more troops on reinforcement TF anyway.
You dont get many MSW types, and each Home Island port has mines so guard your little yard MSW.
My aircraft losses were around 5000 to 23000 japanese, at the end they could only put up small strike packages, though if they got an unescorted TF this could be fatal. At one point the CAP over Tokyo was 15 aircraft of 15 different types. B29 numbers were alway close to the bone, probably never at 100% and few in the pool.
Ground forces didnt lose too many, I spent a lot of time avoiding sending small forces out and made sure I had good odds before assaulting. As mentioned, IMHO, I felt many of the troop numbers were REMF and added to that the superiority of Allied firepower at this point it didnt take too much effort to clear a base and move on. Through a bit of manoeuvring, and luck, I stopped any IJA troops from evacuating Kyushu and having to fight them continually. (I think on the mainland you need 2 thrusts, to channel the way you want retreats to happen, you cant control them but if 2 options are available you have a 50% chance of them opening a hole into the rear.)
