Sadly it´s a PBEM this time. Wanted to make it better and got the worst possible outcome.
Two Divisions with Shock attack seems to be a good solution. Hitting hard and fast.
I bet it was the long time the enemy baseforces had to prepare all the destruction.
Imho it has NOTHING to do early or late attack, just with the enemy defense and the time the fighting lasts.
Don't worry I am in a PBEM with 5 players, and my day is coming, I already have an idea he is going to move some troops from Java to Palembang which will lead to a huge problem

Mhh, then make sure to attack Palembang with enough power.
Maybe this will make things easier on Java later and avoid the logistical nightmare i face now.

Palembang is a festering sore for the Japanese player in the PBEM which I'm engaged, It's July 3rd and the Dutch with the help of 2 Indian Divisions from Singers and two Punjabs are still calling the place home. The only thing I know about Japanese Industry is I can't run it so I sent a PM to someone I thought could help me understand the effects of holding on, 2000 plus AV, with 5 forts in a #3 defensive hex plus plenty of supply is big trouble not to mention facilities are already damaged. That looks strange. I would not expect anything undamaged there....
With that many troops you should maybe try too cut him off from supply and then pound the Palembang airfield
as much as you can. That´s what i would try there.

if this is PBEM then your opponent aimed at destroying the facilities there in bringing extra units there. Don´t know if the AI would do something like that? While it´s "great" for the Allied, it´s actually "bad" for the game and it will rob both sides some fun IMO because without Palembang´s oil/fuel the Japanese are more or less screwed from day one.
My ongoing PBEM saw the Japanese taking everything everywhere completely intact IIRC.

holy crap... don´t know how much fun this PBEM is in the end and you also have to wonder how realistic it would be to give up on Singapore without even trying to hold on while bringing everything to a Dutch place called Palembang. I guess not realistic at all. There are a couple of things in a PBEM that can be done that totally rob the fun for me. I want to fight it out over years, not for 4 months. That´s what the smaller scenarios are for and I have never touched them. But noone take it personally, to each his own I would say.

Yep, that´s true, Castor. But it´s a learning game with time limit. My opponent just shows me the difference
between a human player with some experience and the AI. And he explains what i should make better.
He already said if this would be a real game he would offer a restart. Nobody want a game like this.
Life as japan is already hard enough especially for newbies like me [:)]

I'm the allied player and have been getting hammered daily since Singapore fell lately it's been amped up and AAA nails some bombers every turn despite 14,000/15,000 ft attacks, I had over 700 fires there a week ago , I can't say I was hating it , I'm almost looking forward to eviction/surrender so I can see what is left of industry. It's been alot of fun for me.

I have captured Palembang before with over 80 % damaged. I waited too long I think to go for it. Runing the Jap. economy was a bit more difficult because of that level of damage.

@Sulu Sea
Fires are not allowed in my game [:D] except from naval bombardment (no strategic attacks yet).
I was close to a heart attack when i saw the fires after my own bombardment attack in preparation of the landing at Palembang.
From what i saw it destroyed nearly 50 refineries. But that was the only attack that caused fires from what i saw.
But i agree with Castor, a very unusual setup you guys have there. Is there a AAR to follow on this ? [X(]

for learning purpose:
1. When do you capture it ?
2. With what forces ?
3. Against what resistence ?
4. How long lasted the fight ?

Last time I moved no LCUs at all from Singers and lost the place in 4 days despite changing to the best leaders, I like to play with an historical feel but also would like to think that agreements could be made to slow the onslaught and save India/Austrailia from invasion. Although you stated I
"brought everything " from Singers to Palembang which is false what I brought has provided a cushion for building up for a possible seige elsewhere. In my opinion the Japanese side has the initative and you have to put up speed bumps when or where you can.

In the PBEM games I've played as the Allies, I always want to see some damage at Palembang, but I'm always happy to see it if the damage is not too much. I want my Japanese opponents to be able to put up a fight a year down the road and not have to keep all their ships in port due to a lack of fuel.

yeah,
everything is of course an exageration, forget the everything and replace it with what you´ve brought there. I guess in real life, the divs would then be moved to Java to defend that place if you want to see some agreement between the Dutch and British (if for some reason Singapore would be lost) but not to Palembang to defend the oil rigs, or more game whise speaken, to "destroy" the oil/refineries there. Like I´ve said, no critism here, to each his own while I wouldn´t do it to have a "better" campaigin in the end. I have seen people sending all their carriers on a kamikaze raid to take out Palembang´s and Borneo´s oilfields while losing all carriers, also destroying most of the oil. A disaster for the Japanese (they lost immediately without oil) and a war winner for the Allied. But having a dozen carriers sunk to do it? I found it, let´s say, strange. If you invade Palembang as the Allied sometime in 44 that´s one thing, denying the Japanese of all oil in 42 already doesn´t seem to be a good idea to me if you want to have an interesting campaign for four years. Just my 2c.

there was a thread on this I started in WITP war room, on 3-31-08. I'm guessing the process hasn't changed much in AE. There was some posts by Uamaga that suggested he either knew the code or was entirely making up a really elaborate hoax.
Basically he claimed that there's a 33% chance Japan captures it intact no matter what. After that there's a lot of benefit to making sure the allies are disrupted. Beyond that, take a look at his formula. It was more complicated than I cared about really

I am Seille's opponent. [:D] I loaded the small Allied units at Singapore and unloaded at Palembang rather than just have them run away empty. I had transport planes bring in some more Dutch units. The big influx of units was sending most of the "at sea" brigades from near India to Sumatra. Normally, I don't sent the brigades here, but since it is a learning game, I thought I would see what would happen. I can still learn lessons even though most of it has been going towards Seille. We have plans to play till March/April 42 before starting a complete campaign game. There were less than 100 engineers and less than 10 engineer vehicles there.

Hey , I have to applaud the chivalry although your tactics sound more like Percival than fighting men I admire.
I bought out troops and moved them
in theatre just as people do in every game. Of course there are tradeoffs for every tactic applied in this game, it cost me ships , airframes and tradeoffs at other locations.
If my opponent who seems like a great guy has an issue with motivation to play this game if things go south on him or feels he's learned lessons he can apply more readily against future opponents I wouldn't have any negative feelings if he told me he's had enough because of the situation.

What influences the damage at a location like Palembang?
Attacks by the Attackers?
Attacks by the Defenders?
Air Attacks (on particular targets?)?
Naval Bombardments?
For example if the Japanese had moved a couple of units into the city and the allies attcked them, would it have damaged the city? Every tactic should have a counter..
