Roman Turn 3: Second round losses and lineup before round 3. The Romans are not retreating - and they have reason to feel confident.

Roman Turn 3: Third round losses and lineup for round 4. After being rather unlucky during rounds one and two, we finally managed to strike back. But the situation is still hanging in the balance.

Roman Turn 3: Gracchus retreats finally and Hannibal pursues him. The Companion Cavalry was the only remaining unit in the field. Win or loss was decided by one "rout" result.
Hannibal wins a "Pyrrhic Victory" and remains in the field with only half his force (8 units left)

Roman Turn 3: The Romans manage to replace many of the losses during their recruit phase and end their turn. There are some justified doubts whether Hannibal can remain in Italy for long with his battered army.

That's one thing that I've discovered, without a Punic Tricks card, it is hard for Hannibal to be effective in a battle! His command rating of twelve doesn't help that much....

Tony, thank you for reading. I agree, the higher command bonus can easily be overridden by the random die rolls in any given battle and it is only a small advantage on average.

You are correct. I'll take a large army or Punic Tricks every time. I'm enjoying your AAR and the game...

Turn 4: The locals hesitate to join Hannibal (maybe they know more than we do) and there are few new recruits available. But we stock-up on "Punic Tricks" - relief....

Roman Turn 4: The third Roman General in a row attacks Hannibal in Cisalpine Gaul ....
There are no other significant Roman moves this turn and the Romans have not yet started any overseas expeditions.

Roman Turn 5: Fabius moves into Etruria but smartly refuses to battle Hannibal in the open while Paullus wanted to raid cities in deserted CA-Gaul with a (too) limited 3 legion force - but failed.
