Right now: Armada 2526 as each race has other goals, you have to change the way you play every time.

I know you asked for just one but i am adding another one:

Takeda 3 conquer Japan during the Sengoku period...each castle is unique....

I recommend Medieval Total War/Viking Invasion with XL expansion it's by far the best of the Total War series.

Please recommend your favorite (only one) must play game.

Right now, Crown of Glory EE. [:D] It is really a cool game-especially if you allow yourself to hate your opponent (only temporarily, of course[;)])

By pouring your intellect into achieving righteous retribution against your "enemies" you can attain a wonderful feeling of contentment.[:D] Just getting slapped around is not very entertaining (for most).

My favorite game will be different in a month or two. Whatever it may be, it will have to have a good multi player function. Its not as much fun hating just an ai.

You have much hate. The Dark Side will consume you . . .

Play free demos of those games you're remotely interested in, but suspect they won't last for long on your hard disk and hence are not worth the money.

/edit: I did that with Mass Effect 2 and hated the game from the get-go. It's just running from point a to point b to trigger a script. No freedom, no real rpg mechanics, no thinking.

Argh! PUKE! Thanks for the warning on that.

*sigh* I really enjoyed Fallout3, and am thinking about ordering the "Complete" collection so I can play the DLCs. Never did finish the main map, but played it so much . . . I think I probably need to wait a year or so longer before I go back and play it again. It was a lot of fun with some mods to add a bit more realism.

So sad that Steam is taking over. I just cannot abide the idea of that crap on my machine.

Well, then you're limiting yourself. Steam is not "crap", just because you don't like it.

Steam is crap:

- It does not work for everyone.
- It does things on your computer it shouldn't do.
- It downloads an entire game even if you have it on a dvd.

Basically, while it works for many people, the program it's still in beta-stage....maybe it will work in 10 years. [8|]

I've bought games from Steam, as have many of our customers. It's a distribution platform and it definitely has pros and cons, but it's not a trivial thing providing and managing downloadable games to that many people. Caveat emptor as always, be an informed customer regardless of where you purchase. However, this thread itself was about game recommendations. It's pretty clear that Anthropoid would prefer non-Steam game recommendations, so let's stick to that. [8D]

I value and appreciate the digital distribution service provided by Gamersgate and Matrix. I've even used Impulse and did not dislike it.

Well, Steam offers Arma2:OA 50% off today. That game is a recommendation worth as well.

It seems like you maybe need a change of genre for a bit, like you're burnt out on strategy gaming right now. Maybe grab one of the D&D titles GOG has been releasing over the past couple of months? Or get yourself a shooter and blow some stuff up. [:)]

I use Counter Strike SOurce, Left 4 Dead(1 or 2), and Killing Floor for my First person shooter fix

I revisited Warband, mostly the Brytenwalda mod (man that is a work of art!) quite a bit here lately. But ultimately Mount&Blade just becomes repetitive (like most of them) once you get to a high-enough level.

A shooter off GoG does sound intriguging . . .

Dang Steam! [:@] They sell Arma2 also eh?

I just might have to break down and breach my boycott eventually . . . still the longer I hold out, the better chance they'll fold right! [:D]

Gamersgate has a special on Batman: Arkham Asylum. It's an excellent game.

I'd definately recommend Arma2. I had a bug with it, but seems like it was limited to just me, but from what I'm able to play, I love it. Superb game with great scope.

I got it from Gamersgate. Maybe not 50% off, but something might come up.

Btw, the front page on Steam doesn't show it, but Arma II: Combined Operations is -50%, too.

??? Steam offers Arma 2, but it isn't a Steamworks game. Big difference. Hell, Steam sells Birth of America (via Strategy First), but it obviously doesn't use Steamworks and isn't limited to their system. Just because something is available on Steam doesn't mean it's unavailable any other way EXCEPT games that use Steamworks.

Check out GoG and see what they've got that might catch your eye. Also, somebody else suggested Batman : Arkham Asylum from Gamersgate and I'll second that. Fantastic action game, and a lot of fun.

Hmmm, think I'll try out the Arma2 Complete demo on GoG, and if it looks cool just buy the whole Ultimate Edition thing (Arma, Arma2).

That's a good choice, Anthropoid. It's not without it's bugs but the AI is pretty impressive and the combat is realistic and challenging, but also greatly satisfying and fun.

The great thing about it is, you can be running through some woods and the enemy is coming after you, then you realize there's no script here. Anything can happen. It's not like CoD where you know there's going to be 4 enemy soldiers running at you at a particular time.

Let us know how you get on with the demo.

My current favorite game is in my sig. [;)]

Best tactical game I've played, and the mods that are coming out for it are so good, they are like expansion packs!

The AI is more than just an opponent. The "Regimental AI" is a core part of the game and simulates historically accurate tactics. An important part of the game, even when playing multiplayer. I have recently played the battle of Wagram by TCP/IP and am also playing the battle of Austerlitz via pbem. There are also powerful map and OoB editors included as well.

On the Matrix side, it looks like WitE is due out soon. Some gamers get excited when a Blizzard game is released... for me it's a Gary Grigsby title. [:)]

If you like Star Trek and strategy games, then you owe it to yourself to try Birth of the Federation.

It's old (published in 1999) and somewhat buggy -- there's a memory leak that causes a turn slowdown which Microprose never fixed before going out of business -- but it's very atmospheric and has a decent number of excellent mods that have both revitalized the game and extended its longevity. I've had BOTF for eleven years now, and it still remains my most oft-played PC game.

Anguille will not be surprised that I second his recommendation of Armada 2526. It's a very solid 4x title; I've been playing it quite a bit the last couple months or so now. It's quite possibly become my second-favorite space strategy game after BOTF.
