And now I will end, Condolences to the Crew of the Oberon. I failed to protect them, and in harms way they fell. But the Battle is won, over 10 subs were sunk, many more than we were tasked with. The Convoys on their way to the continent have a much better shot now.........

Wow, this was really cool, no wonder this was the Best Wargame of its day. I enjoyed playing it. In 1989 I had not even heard of Harpoon, but if I had, I know I would have been playing this all the time.

The End.

Ethan,

what a wonderful AAR ! Reading this is pure nostalgia in its best.

I started pooning with this DOS version I think, around 1991. Yes, it was so addictive that I played it whenever possible.

This scenario is MUCH harder playing the modern HC versions since subs are so deadly modeled nowadays. ASW versus a dozen first line subs is sheer heart attack now.

Regards,
Ralf

Thank you, I was having a blast! I found the old DosBox key card on Wiki and the CTR-F5, gave a screen-shot! It made it fairly easy. Funny how the DB data went though, the Oscar's doing 35Kts??

And that will soon follow...I am curious indeed.

I second that. I started somewhere around this version too on a Packard Bell in Jr. High. The ASW model in Harpoon1/HCE has always been awesome.

Packard Bell
You are an old one eh? :)

That too was my first PC, got it in 1995. That is about the time I got into Harpoon. I had come across harpoon Classic in the 'cheap' bin at Best Buy. The rest they say is history. I had no money and yet I saw H2AE in the bin at the Mall. I used a credit card to buy it, pissed the wife off. She no longer fusses at me about Harpoon. (Great Woman!)

First, the PC is handling the calculations much better. The game does not feel as 'burdened' as it did with 1.32A.

Anyhow, lets see the differences.

Well I wish I had the Screen shot capture ability that the old versions had....I can not get clarity.

My first Victim. Of note here the Foxtrot was spotted via SOSUS. I dispatched an Orion and located a firing solution, so I dispatched (6) Mk 46's. Only two hit, but that was enough.

It would seem that it is MUCH more difficult to track and locate subs. My kill ratio is better because I allocate more on the first shot. Game time is running low, I have less contacts than the earlier version.

************ I did get enough though *********

10 kills - 1 damaged on my side - run aground.

A better screen shot tool would be nice! Sorry about the clarity, but I wanted the file to be small.

And this is how it ended, 10-1. Many less contacts that I could pursue. I barely met the winning conditions. It is truly good to see the same scenario played with both versions. I highly suggest it.
