i have had problems in other programs with MS media player. Try VLC media player. Also do a search for "Media Player" and see what you get. Also close the UAC no matter what else you do and always run with ADmin. I have win 7 but the issue could be related.
I also wonder what you use on your PC that is different as I think you said the game ran fine on the PC. Lastly I have had many friends who have tried to run various games on there laptops and failed for one reason or another. Good luck in finding a solution.

Thank you!!
As I matter of fact, I changed the name of five sound files inside the SOUND folder, and the game does not crash anymore. As I had been told that there has been no changes in the way sound is handled from v1.01 to v1.02, I have to assume that the improved stability of v1.02 after doing the renaming is due to the fact that there is some degree of paranormal activity inside my laptop...

I've had similar problems with my game after upgrading to 1.02. After reading this post I converted all sounds in the sound folder to wav 44100Hz 16bits stereo. Yes the sounds are wav to begin with but different types of wav. I used "Switch Sound File Converter" downloaded from download.com. After this the game works fine for me.

Hellwars30 seconds
Huntthemdown
Thunder
AirRecon
Click1

Unfortunately no. All uses the Microsoft PCM codec in my computer but there are several other files that uses the same. I haven't had any problems playing these in my media player or any other sound program for that matter. My game didn't crash before I tried to move a unit or attack with it.
The only thing that changed in my system was the 1.02 patch, nothing else so I don't see how it's a problem with codecs or system. I hope matrix recodes all soundfiles to the next patch and this problem will probably vanish.

Maybe there was a "problem" in your PC with one of the "click" audio files.
I realize that this is a very minor issue and will be very low in priority of the list of fixes. If it helps, I have made this experiment. If I use the AirRecon Sound File provided with the game, it crashes specifically in v1.02 (not in previous versions) but only when I attempt to make air recon. I can reproduce that file with RealPlayer but not with WindowsMediaPlayer...[&:]

The advice from Mill65 seems good (recoding your files to normal stereo). Just a thought - perhaps the problem is with the settings of your soundcard itself?
Have you tried to switch off 5.1 and any audio enhancements etc. so that basically all sounds are forced to play in normal stereo ?
