I can think of no better Matrix game to recommend than Battlefield Academy, simple to learn and a pleasure to play.

Introductory Plus Fun ... turn based games that are fairly easy to play right out of the the box with limited Manual reading
Battlefield Academy + Blitzkrieg France Add-on (Slitherine)
Decisive Campaigns (VR Designs)
Kharkhov: DotD + the Across the Dnepr Add-on (SSG)
all good ones ... and in no particular order
(plus all three are PBEM capable)

Quite. Although I am still setting up turn 1.
Now lets see..rules page 125... assigning the correct pay to each unit.
Hmmm...let's see... machinist...based in continental USA..cross reference for career history..Damn! He served in the Philippines in 1926 and learned typing. Hhe gets the 40c clerk's allowance...will have to adjust that..
Now lets see.. Torpedoman's mate, unmarried, no additional pension provision ..that's an easy one. $50/month..
Yippee!..We're cooking now!..Another 45 crew members to do and this destroyer is ready for action..

lol ezz that's exactly what I would picture a setup turn of WitP being like. Too much detail not enough action.

How could a game be exciting without a discreet level of micromanagement? It emphasizes the sense of immersion and makes you feel attached toward your men.

Don't forget to calculate how much toilet paper each base needs each month or you take a huge morale penalty.

That depends solely on how effectively it is impemented, and then it is strictly a matter of taste. Do you want to automate shift change schedules, or micro your dolts like it was Sims 1942 Wehrmacht Expansion Pack!
I remember one of the most frustrating things about playing Silent Hunter III was your crew had to be pampered like babies just so they wouldn't crap out on you just as you begin shadowing a task force.

Another vote for Battlefield Academy as a beginner.
There are many others to choose from for the next level. On a grand scale, Decisive Campaigns Warsaw to Paris isn't overly difficult to learn but it's definitely on a larger scale.
Oh! And for some ancients fun, give Field of Glory a try. It's only a bit more to learn than Battlefield Academy.
