Another thing about armor - it doesn't need any energy -> fewer generators -> more place for other fancy stuff.

I always build some destroyers with a lot of armor and no shields. If you research the armor tree (which is researched much fatser than the shield tree) you will get realy mighty ships in short time.

Interesting. I will try this once. Also shields are in a highly contested tree for me, so I don't tend to get to the good stuff really early.

If a newB can throw his .02$ in I would like to make a observation. Not being a treky but always enjoyed the show, once shields were down damage was always taken. Can't remember hearing "we lost shields, armor at 50%". So as far as Star Trek goes I am not quiet sure how armor in game relates to Star Trek. But if armor is used as ppart of the game I have no problems using it.
I am using the Spock era Mod and I am thinking when I get around to designing my own ships I may not include armor or very light armor whith the thought the armor being the "skin" of the ship.
If I am way off base with my thoughts please let me know of your opinions.

you're not, it's just the way 4x games have evolved..there was also a more significant role for armor.
And I use the same treky role playing ... "minor damage to the secondary hull" [:)]
