Cedits to try and capture the Tigerphobia during those times. Though for me it just didn't quite work. Even in my pre-teen years when I first remember watching this movie, I had already learned Hollywood's cookie-cutter system, and knew fair will American protagonists simply can't lose, no matter what odds they face. It's like watching Star Trek, just no suspension of disbelief.
However, watching it in my later years, with more ADULT UNDERSTANDING, I finally get the jokes & puns now.
BTW, I never understood why Eastwood was so popular. He was always so mono-tone of an actor, many have told me they found him utterly boring in a cast.

Did any of you silly greenhorns even have any friends or relatives who fought in WWII?? Kelly's Hero's is the epitome of the GI in all his naiive candor & opportunism. It is the ultimate in dark WWII sarcasm. Kelly's Hero's is unparalleled in its eternal WWII Holiness & Sanctitude. KH's ranks highest among many other other Glorious Epics such as The Great Escape, Tobruk, Patton, Tora! Tora! Tora!, Anzio, Von Ryans Express, 633 Squadron, Operation Crossbow, The Battle of Britain, The Longest Day & Battle of the Bulge to name but a few 1960's immortal classics. We ate, slept & breathed WWII throughout the 60's & 70's on this magnificent testimony to an era that will never die!!!

Yes, Slaakman, I did have a relative who fought in World War II. My father was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to the O.S.S. He landed at D+5 and spent the rest of the war in France, working with radio intercept teams. He was present at the chateau when Field Marshall Kesselring was in secret negotiations with the Allies to surrender the German Army in northern Italy. He had many other close friends who served too, including one one as a navigator on a B-24, and another who was a fighter pilot in the Pacific.
Dad is 87 now and in great health. He is very proud of his service in World War II. I grew up watching Combat and 12 O'Clock High and Rat Patrol by his side. He hates Kelly's Heroes with a passion similar to that we see expressed in here about The Movie that Shall be not be Named.
I know that there are many people that love Kelly's Heroes. It is completely incomprehensible to me, so I can't do anything else than fall back on the idea that people have different tastes.

Whats the reason he hates it?Is it because it portrays GI's as perverts(Big Joe asks Kelly to find him a "good looking kid" at beginning),mentally challenged,hippies,theives/criminals,ignorant fools.If I was a WW2 vet I wouldnt like it either.

Dad detests Kelly's Heroes because it doesn't portray the U.S. military of World War II close to accurately. When you consider the cause and the comrades, especially those who gave their lives, with reverence, a ridiculous, inaccurate, distasteful portrayal is about the greatest insult possible.
Kelly's Heroes is a faux World War II setting populated by Vietnam War-era hippies.

Kelly's Heroes is a faux World War II setting populated by Vietnam War-era hippies.
(I think he underestimates the beautiful comedy that also came out of the war.....after all it was only a flesh wound in the greater scheme of things....crucifixion??...out the door, line on the left, one cross each!)

We know it was intended to be a comedy, but it failed miserably. I know you feel much differently about it, so we fall into the two different camps - those that don't like it/those that do.

Failed??? I know a host of WWII vets who rolled on the floor laughing whenever they saw it including my uncles, cousins & grandparents.

BTW, your father perhaps can feel better now in in that he isn't alone in his feelings toward some Hollywood movies. Nope, I mean this seriously. Just ask what the English think about the Patriot or Braveheart movies, etc.
