Try to use settings that are supported by your monitor.  LCD screens are not CRT's, they do not support any rez.  1440x800 is not a typical rez supported.  Look at your supported list and try one like -px1280 -py800.  should work.  If not, update your video drivers.  It isn't the game causing the issue.
