Hi, Cvan. Nice to meet another Trek fan on the forums. With all us Trekkies playing, surely we'll see such things as phaser beam array weapons, transporters, tractor beams eventually implemented. [8D]
Ship capture has been a wish since the very early days of Distant Worlds (almost a year old now!).
I wonder if there's something planned for it's 1st anniversary...... ?
EDIT: A cloaking device would be nice too.....
Thank you for welcoming me. A cloaking device? Well well, what else could a guy with Romulan Star Empire emblem come up with? Just kidding! It would be great to see one of those for surprise attacks.

He could come up with Romulan ale instead of the Rephidium one. Wait until you meet the sona guy. [:)]

I usually don't comment about cloaking devices as I know it would be a strange mechanic ingame. I don't know what the best solution would be, but it would certainly be too much micro-management to tell each ship/fleet to cloak/decloak at the push of a button.
I think the best way to make use of it ingame would be to simply have the ships cloak automatically when you issue an attack order. They would warp to the target and then close to weapons range before decloaking and making the surprise attack.
Tractor beams could be used tactically as holding devices (perhaps 4 or 5 seconds). They would prevent a much faster enemy ship from escaping. This would mean we could build large, slow ships with tractor beams that could be used to good effect in battle.
I've suggested before that we could use the tractor beams to remove Kaltors and other space creatures from populated star systems without harming them. Mainly an immersion thing, I don't see the Federation or the Securans killing space creatures. Monsters have feelings too you know.
As for using transporters to capture enemy ships, I think it's most likely that we'll see ships dock with each other and commence boarding at first. Transporters are pretty much exclusive to Star Trek tech, so I don't know if we'll ever see them in the game.

That, or the ships are always considered cloaked (transparent on the screen) and have high passive energy consumption. When firing or detected by sensors they become fully visible again. The main point here is that you only need ONE cloak module on the ship. Better modules are lighter and have lower power requirements.
The main problem of the current system is that you can't tell if your cloaked ships are "cloaked" to enemy sensors.

Maybe somekind of special troop module called boarding/assault module that gives the ship ability to transfer its troops to enemy ships. As long as its able to catch it of course.
Also, bigger, slower ships would be vulnerable to this, so either they have troops of their own or shoot the ships trying to board first.
Balancing: Because spamming this would cause some problems this module needs to be big. Mainly because the ship essentially becomes dedicated capture vessel as majority of its structure is changed to allow it to attach onto other ships and allow the troops break into the enemy vessel.

Not sure you want cardasians (even renegade ones) visit the Birar Patch [:)]
it would make for an interesting slaughter [:D]

Slaughter huh? Could you imagine what Garok or Dukat would look like with
their face stretched? [:D]
I also believe that the gases in the Briar Patch would equalize the
strength of those Galor-class warships as well. We'll see! I'll pit
my forces against the Cardassians in Igards' Star Trek TRSE mod and
let you know the outcome. [:)]
{ Even will use the editor and add a Briar Patch Gas Cloud...lol! }

Thank you for welcoming me, ehsumrell. As much as you ask yourself how I would look with stretched face, I ask myself how would you look in one of my fine outfits I sewed! We could say that the curiousity is mutual! However I must disappoint you with the fact that Cardassians are expert leaders and warriors as much as I'm good tailor!

Say that when you're in the Briar Patch with no shields and 4 Velocity
Shard Torpedoes coming at you! [:-]
{ We 'stretch' broken ship hulls also! }
But aside that...you're welcome Cvan (or is it Garrak?) And I would love
to adorn the Intergalactic Conferences in one of your 'fine' outfits! [:)]

I'm Cvan as much as I'm tailor! Oh and about the outfit... You will have to remind me to iron (or should I say, stretch) it for you before I send you one! We don't want it to look like your face, right?
