Australia? But you mean WHOLE Australia? Is that really possibile? It will trigger the arrive of new land forces (right???) and it seems to me so big that i cannot even imagine how much units he will need for this task....
Between Oz and Hawaii, if it was me, i'd say the latter...even if it will require a major and prolongued investment in terms of land, air and naval assets for Japan.... don't know...really.
 
Anyway, the real question is: can i do anything about it? What can i do with the KB ready to smash every attempt of bringing supplies to the possible target areas? My 3 CVs are pretty useless right now...at least till the KB is lingering around CENTPAC. I'll try to bring some supplies to Oz taking the long route moving very south in the pacific...but i have not any real unit of reinforcement to bring there at the moment...just a couple of regiments in SF that, btw, are immobilized there by the threat of his naval assets ready to smash me as soon as i put my nose outside west-coast.
 
I'm studying the Intel every day, but till now i haven't seen anything indicating a possibile major japanese target....
 
What should i do now?

Well, he's got his revenge.
The Z force was divided due to the fact that BC Repulse was damaged and she was slowing down the whole TF. She was left alone with a DD with engine problems. An enemy SC TF composed of Heavy Cruisers and Destroyers made contact and sunk with a couple of torpedoes each my brave ships...
His Surface divisions are closing the ring around Borneo. The BBs are still in north-west Borneo, while the CAs, drove down towards Sosarbaja and are rejoining with Mini KB and another strong SC TF coming from the Mollucs.... Tomorrow we'll hear the last voice of the Duthc and the Brit Fleet in the DEI-SRA. Amen.

He made a smart and brave move in the ocean between PH and West Coast. One of his BB intercepted close to the edge of the map my convoy and savaged my ships full of supplies for OZ [:(]...His subs are lingering in those waters too, sinking TKs and AKs that try to connect San Francisco to Panama and to Hawaii...Hawaii are isolated completely at the moment.

I probably found where is he aiming at. CHINA. In the last few days we intercepted several radio messages saying that he's moving many troops to Haipong (China, north of Taiwan)...so he's probably try to conquest the whole China, diverting those units originally intended to storm over malaya there. My front is trumbling in China. Everywhere he's attacking and i'm simply fading back...my troops are too green and my supply is low. The perimeter has been breached in many points and he's committing a HUGE amount of his air forces in this theatre (lots of betties, nells and zeros too...so the IJNAF is partecipating actively!).

If he is coming into China full force, it is at times better to let your badly depleted units getting killed as they will respawn in Chungking at 1/3 strength, so a unit that is at 1/5th or less strength I will not withdraw from isolated areas, insted I rejoice when these are killed off as that strengthen my forces (it does take some time for sure but still...).
Also those light grey urban hexes are a killer, the enemy will take heavy losses here, but no matter how badly he seems to be mauled, be very wary to counterattack!! (cost me 55k Chinese troops [;)])

Does he have any CVs near BB Hiei? If not it might be worth it to burn some fuel from your CVs, but then again it could be a trap.

4 days full of tension.

The main and most important events took place in the waters between Hawaii and SF. His raiders (2 BBs,2 CAs and 1 CL identified) managed to sink at least 20 transports full of precious supplies. luckly no troops or planes were in there. I can live without them, even if at the moment the cargo capacity of the west coast is pretty limited.
i've ordered Saratoga to try to intercept...i was really anxious (sp!?) cause jap subs infested those waters and also because i still fear a trap...what if those ships where a decoy to tempt me to bring out my CVs?!...however i took the risk. After 3 days of running, finally my CV managed to launch a couple of strikes...the result has been really depressing. One bomb scratched the paint of Karishima, while a couple of bombs set up a fire on the Tone...not enough for sure. BB Hei and the CL managed to get away safetly. My subs were blinded and a torp didn't detonate...pretty bad luck i'd say.
Anyway his move has been bold and brave. I have to learn.

Now the other very important fact is the following message reported by my Catalinas on Midway:

"xAK La Plata Maru detects PBY-4 Catalina at 158,79 near Kure Island"

158,79 means north east of Midway... OMG...this may mean he's ready to invade the Hawaii!!!!!!!
What can i do!? I have to say i feel a bit panicked (sp!?)...i don't know how to face a PH invasion...really i don't...

In China i cannot stop the tide. He's advancing everywhere and now Changsha, Wochow and the whole central front is menaced. He's using something like 150 IJN crack bombers, at least 60 zeros, tons of IJA bombers and Oscars...
I sent 2 AVG groups to ambush the IJAAF near Canton. It worked! Shoot down something like 35 enemy planes losing only one flying tiger. But the lack of supplies and av support forced me to abbandon the fight after just 2 days and now my AVG is again hidden in the north of China, waiting for his planes to become operational again...pretty embarassing i'd say...while he's now sweeping every Chinese base with hordes of Zeros!

In Malaya he's finally moving south, but still no landings. Think in 4 days he's entering in georgetown.

In Burma he's troops are approaching Mouleim. The theatre has been pretty calm till now, with no enemy air raids.

In PI he conquered San fernando, abbandoned by my troops that are concentrating in Manila. PI and US air force in Luzon have been obliterated.

In SRA-DEI he has invaded Timor, so now Java and Sumatra are isolated. Couple of Sub actions (lost one sub for one destroyer of his) and some ASW duties but nothing really exciting. I'm hiding my SF TFs ready to smash him as soon as he lands somewhere in JAVA or Sumatra.

In CENTPAC AND SOPAC he's conquering every single island he's able to reach. The Solomons have been all invaded. The Phoenix islands too (Canton Island now is prob his next target).

Thx Tarje! well, i'm far from attacking. I'm trying to defend on rough terrain only but the hordes of jap bombers make any position unkeepable [:o]

I have some spare time this early afternoon and, waiting for my opponent's turn, i'll try to analyze the general strategic situation.

For what concerns losses, let's analize with WITPtracker my situation.

As u can see through the screenshot, i've lost 1/10 of my actual merchant tonnage (sp?), so to say 55 AK/APs...which is bad but i think it's still sustainable considering i'm getting new AKs every day.
what really hurts me are the war vassels lost.
8 BBs and 1 BC, 2 CAs and 3 CLs is a damned high price to pay and this will, de facto, halt my naval power untill 1943 at least. I'll be inferior, for what concerns gun size, in every possible naval engagement.
plus those 15 DDs lost mean my escorts will always be short of DDs in the next months.

While Japan naval force is pretty much untouched...

Now the air losses.

As you can see the air war hasn't sprung yet. The A2A numbers are pretty equal by now. This just because Japan has invested his Air forces mainly in China and Luzon, where my Air assets (a part from the first days in Luzon) are non-existent.
This is encouraging cause i managed to save most of my good pilots which are now hard training in India, Oz and U.S.

However i'm pretty sure that as soon as he delivers his main blow, these numbers are going to change badly.

Now let's come to the strategical situation.

China:

I cannot be sure if this is really one of his main strategical goal. What i'm sure is that he's pushing really hard here, committing a good portion of his IJN air forces and many land units which, being non restricted, could be used elsewhere.
However the fact is that he's simply advancing to fast, even to let me retreat into some more favourable terrain conditions. I'm already considering the hypotesis to abbandon the whole Changsha area and retreat towards Chungking to preserve at least the fighting force of some of my units.
anyway, being bombed every day (my corps, when bombed, usually suffer 3/400 casualities each day) and that's slows down a lot my retreat.

Hawaii and Centpac:

Well, if he's really committed for a grand scale invasion i cannot do anything to stop him. I have no more surface combat ships in the area. Only 3 CVs whose air units weren't even able to sink a BB and a CA...don't even dare to think about facing the Kido Butai right now. The waters between PH and West Coast are infested of dozens of nasty jap subs...and their torpedoes work really well[8|] and i have no spare DDs to escort any convoy.
I decided not to risk and to abbandon PH at its own fate for the moment. KB was last time seen going to Truk...so very very close (possibly 4 days) to PH. My air force has been decimated on dec 7th and during the following days so i cannot rely on it.
Better not to risk i say. Let's leave PH alone for the moment, hoping that dreadfull report was just a decoy or a mistake by a drunk catalina pilot (do at Midway they have any beer!?!?).

PI-SRA-DEI:

Luzon's days are now almost over. My little Army is being siezed at Clark and Manila by the advancing enemy. Plus he has the complete control of the air, so i bet now it will start a costant carpet bombing which will lead to a drastic destruction of supplies and then to the death of the USAFE army.
Java and Sumatra are now circled, with northern Borneo and the Mollucs-Timor completely in japs' hands. The fact that southern Borneo isn't his yet means that there's a little dark corner in his naval search and so i'm keeping my SC TFs hidden in Java, in the hope that he gets too bald and comes landing without any decent escort or air cover.

Malaya:

Stockpiling supplies in Singapore and waiting for the inevitable. However it will take him another month at least to conquer the whole peninsula...
This time should give india the chance to reinforce his positions (it's amazing how weak is India so early in the game. Japan could land right now and between Madras and Karachi there are only 200 AVs in total!!!![X(]

Possible Japanese main targets:

Now it comes the main question: where could he aim at? Oz?India? NZ and SOPAC? Hawaii?
Let's say that China is one of his goals. He have the chance of grabbing at least another one main target. I've read about invasions of India (till the very gates of Karachi), of Oz and NZ, of Hawaii....which is the less defended? And, above all, which is the one i can really defend with some chances?

Not alot you can do about the Japanese airforce here, as you say, supplies are just too low. Are you using your transports to fly supplies from Ledo into China? They will not deliver alot, but every bit helps!
I doubt he will be able to advance into Chungking before your units start to respawn at 1/3 strength, and you should find this city to be pretty safe unless he is prepared to invest really heavy into China. Remember, that since the game was released, garrison requirements have been changed in China. He will be forced to spend some units as garrison.

Hawaii;
Have you considered to land your carrier planes in PH if he comes, and then move your CVs out of harms way? That way you can use your carrier airpower without risking your carriers. Also, IF he comes for Hawaii, you might consider a Hail Mary attempt and set atleast 2/3 of your Catalinas on naval attack to boost your torpedo attacks. You WILL lose most of them though.

Oz;
The main issue early on here is your complete lack of air cover, some P-40Bs should appear in January, but untill then...
And you talked earlier on about Oz reinforcements if he lands far enough to the south. Well I THINK these appear in Aden, so they will not help you defend Oz itself (someone that can confirm?)

India;
Have you checked all your bases and pulled every bit of AV you can towards the Burma border? There are some units in the north that can be sent south without reducing you garrison below the minimum. You might need to send one unit from base A to base B and another one the other way etc. But go over the numbers and see where you can pull out some units.
It will not be alot but it is better than nothing.


Overall, if he takes Hawaii, he will have to heavily invest his naval forces for as long as he wants to hold it, and he will also need alot of aerial power. PH is likely to be his last attack here, as he would want to bomb you into oblivion and then some before taking on those naval guns.
No siginit about troops moving about or preparing for a target? What is the heading of the transport north of Midway?

Have you considered to land your carrier planes in PH if he comes, and then move your CVs out of harms way? That way you can use your carrier airpower without risking your carriers. Also, IF he comes for Hawaii, you might consider a Hail Mary attempt and set atleast 2/3 of your Catalinas on naval attack to boost your torpedo attacks. You WILL lose most of them though.

Oz;
The main issue early on here is your complete lack of air cover, some P-40Bs should appear in January, but untill then...
And you talked earlier on about Oz reinforcements if he lands far enough to the south. Well I THINK these appear in Aden, so they will not help you defend Oz itself (someone that can confirm?)

India;
Have you checked all your bases and pulled every bit of AV you can towards the Burma border? There are some units in the north that can be sent south without reducing you garrison below the minimum. You might need to send one unit from base A to base B and another one the other way etc. But go over the numbers and see where you can pull out some units.
It will not be alot but it is better than nothing.


Overall, if he takes Hawaii, he will have to heavily invest his naval forces for as long as he wants to hold it, and he will also need alot of aerial power. PH is likely to be his last attack here, as he would want to bomb you into oblivion and then some before taking on those naval guns.
No siginit about troops moving about or preparing for a target? What is the heading of the transport north of Midway?

No, no signs of any troops preparing for PH or anything else...however now we have a clear contact north east of Midway. An AK and a PB have been confirmed sighted by my cats in Midway. Luckly i managed to put a couple of transports there with 6000 supplies which now are being unloaded...hopefully we'll get some of them ashore before the storm arrives.
Anyway, nothing change from my original post. The Hawaii, at the moment, are a lost. If he has transports there it means the KB is hiding somewhere, ready to come up and destroy any attempt of answering to this new big threat.

In India i've already pulled every possible unit...not much there at the moment and so much land to defend.

In China today was a bad day. We lost Nanyang after a series of heavy bombings conducted by something like 150 IJA and IJN bombers, escorted by crack zeros...what else i could do?
At Wuchow we had a mixed day. We lost the city on the first day, while, during the second one, a provincial corp, crossing the river, made a shock attack (not ordered by me!!!!!!!) and conquered back the poor city. I probably gained a couple of turns here.

In SRA-DEI he landed at Palembang with a HUGE amount of troops. Tomorrow the oil fields will be his. Java now is alone...

In Malaya things are still very slow...

In Burma the theatre has been activated. He reached moulmein with a tank regiment and probably tomorrow a shock attack will dislodge my 2 depleted Burma bdes. I'm not sure if it's worth to committ in Burma (fear an Indian invasion)...better to keep Karachi defended or to defend the first line in Burma with the actual risk of beeing bypassed?

Couple of sub actions (his subs are still lingering south of San Diego) and some allied TKs on the bottom of the sea, but nothing much interesting.

In NOPAC he's advancing frong jumping in the Alutinias...cannot stop him at the moment. Hopefully the blizzard will arrive to slow down his ops here.

That is done automatically when crossign a river. something to keep in mind when you are ready to start your counterattack in late 42 early 43 [:)]
The border between Burma and India makes for a pretty good defensive line, leave Akyab but try to keep Chittagong if he does not come at you in a force you cannot resist. Build atleast lvl 3 forts in all bases along the river. Also note that alot of those bases can be built into lvl7+ AFs.

China does not look too bad imo, Japan will always gain some ground initially, and your troops will take heavy losses, they are just that inexperienced.
Changsa looks to be in good consition and should be safe. Try to build a lvl 3 fort here, and the Japanese will have to pay heavily to take the city. Also have a few corps in each of the two adjacant cities so he can not easily bypass it.
While fortifying in cities behind rivers does not give a defensive bonus, it will force the enemy to shock attack, and if such an attack does not succeed, the attacker will take a blow to unit disruption.
Non-clear hexes are your friend!

It seems he wants Midway, this does not however mean he will go for Hawaii, taking Midway makes your subs spend more fuel before reaching his areas and gives you less warning about the Mid-Pacific. If he invades and the base does not fall on day 1, I would try to fly out the Catalinas you have available there.

Well, you're really getting blitzed here. In China your best defence is mass and avoid fighting in clear terrain. I know he is moving fast against you, but I see you are moving your forces piecemeal. Get as many units to form large armies as soon as you can. You'll still end up losing a lot of troops and ground, but he'll have to commit more troops against you, slowing his advance and paying a heavier price. You should be able to mass 3-4 large forces of +150k, park them in good terrain and block his advances.

There are numerous ways you can be hitting him. Does he keep ships docked at port within range of your LB bombers? B17's are great on port attack, hit his support vessels while at port. Every hit will matter at this stage. The American subs are frustrating, but put your Dutch and British boats where you want the most attacks as their torps won't be duds. Get your subs busy with minelaying, target transit hexes between water bodies or where you see lots of activity. Every mine hit will be a pain and you may get lucky hitting a major warship. This may cause him to slow down a bit transitioning troops while he has to bring in minesweepers.

I've never played the Allies so I'm trying to put things in terms what I think you can do to hurt him. Don't try and defend everywhere, look at positions of your perimeter you can gain local superiority and try to build up what you can. The Kuriles might be doable once you learn where KB is again. Hit him where he isn't. I wouldn't try to worry about fortifying too many frontline areas at this stage, he'll just swamp them. Decide where you want to hold and reinforce there.

He's really stretching you thin, but he'll be weak in some areas. Patience, you'll see some opportunities arise. Just don't panic and commit your remaining naval assets to a desperate undertaking just in case you feel you must do something. Look for somewhere you can begin to mass with LBA and LCUs. Try and weather the storm as best you can, every little thing you can do to upset his timetable will help. Mines, port attacks and slashing raids away from his LBA and carriers should be able to pay dividends if you are selective in their use and hit the soft spots. Recon, Recon, Recon...the more you see, the better you can react and strike back.

Take my advice with a grain of salt. I've never played the Allies, nor scenario 2 and I don't know the extra goodies Japan gets. You'll be hard pressed, just don't panic...yet . Good luck!

Make sure your SBDs are set to the right altitude for divebombing. If they are listed as 'releasing' they are divebombing (or glidebombing), if they are listed as 'bombing' they are level bombing. Level bombing is relatively inaccurate compared to divebombing. Iirc the db altitude setting should be 10-14k. Someone here will have a better memory than me.
