They only work that way for the enemy. Mine never hit anything unless they fall short [:D]

Just got a gaming computer and I transferred the files over and for some reason when I tried to load the save game it didn't work. No big deal, so I started the campaign over..What a difference, still no KV but I took more losses than before and my Stuka obliterated 2 of my transports and got an Iron Cross for it!

Starting over again...[:)]

This thread seems to have transformed from "random campaigns are fun" to "observations of AI behavior and random battle setups". Hope you don't mind Henri...

Anyhoo, I got lucky in my game when the Russian called in artillery and rockets because I was out of the impact area when it landed. Good thing the Russian has a built-in delay too, that rocket barrage was pretty intense and I'm convinced I would have taken some serious losses had I remained in the impact area. It came down right where I was sitting with a good portion of my force a couple turns prior.

I also got 2 Stuka attacks very early in the battle and although they didn't hit any friendly forces they didn't do a whole lot of damage to the enemy either. I'm not surprised the Stukas are hitting friendlies, look how many other tactical wargames (non-computerized) have mechanics for mistaken air attacks built in.

As far as AT guns are concerned, I have noticed that the friendly auto-fire AI seems to default to AP rounds from friendly tanks when they auto-fire at enemy AT guns. I have had much better luck manually targeting the guns with HE rounds as soon as I can in the next phase. Even with HE though, the AT guns still seem to be pretty difficult to get good hits on before they are able to take out a couple of tanks. I have seen some AT guns take a bunch of HE hits right in the crew area behind the gunshield but the rounds aren't doing any damage to the crew or the gun.

One of the loading quotes mentions a German training manual that states use AP and HE alternatively against AT. Another one states AP as its a more accurate shell. I seem to take out guns fairly well once spotted with AP, aside from the sneaky IGs in buildings.
