The game is very good. Only the map grafics could use more love no doubt. I got a review version from paradox and did a review in german language yesterday:

I have no problem with the map, but I REALLY wish Paradox France (no such thing as AGEOD now) would hire somebody with a better command of written English to proofread game and manual. It takes away from my immersion, and it's so easy to solve.

I consider the economy model as rather underwhelming. Was hoping for something like Victoria I.

This nonwithstanding I consider Pride of Nation to be one of the very few sophisticated historical strategy games on a GLOBAL scale. So far I put some hours in - and barely scratched the surface.
I'd wish Matrix also could sell it just to make PON more popular.

Is there anything to recommend this over Victoria?

So far I like PoN far more than Vic 1 (never touched Vic 2). Esp the economic model makes more sence imo.

I like the combat system. It's AGEOD's tried-and-tested model. The colonial system is also very interesting: you get tons and tons of options for exploring the blanks on the maps (interior of Africa, to pick an obvious example) and taking over areas for colonization.
I like it better than Victoria so far.

Another very good thing is that this is a proper turn-based game, not the standard Paradox continuous nonsense.

I may spend $5 on it when they throw it on sale in six months.

The manual is VERY poor. A disappointment after RUS.

Did you know RUS wasn't really them? I think it was another company that used the Aegod engine - licensed it.
I may be wrong about that, but I think I read it somewhere. If not, I apologize.

I do not mean that as a knock on Aegod, although I can see it might be. I think their games such as RoP and AACW are excellent games.

Gamersgate comes with an installer (but you can save the DL) plus an offline one time activation code (you'll need it for patches, too)
Ageod website just uses the same offline one time activation code. And FWIW the latter also works for registrating at the Paradox forum.

Looks like you're right. The development team was called "Sep Reds", but it was released by (what was then) AGEOD.
BTW, PoN just appeared on Steam. I'm okay with having bought it direct from the publisher, and the price is the same.
Can't really complain THAT much when the game is THIS cheap. €20 is not much these days.

Damian,
I bought the game straight from the Aegod workshop website. It never asked for even the serial number!! I got a zip file, I unzipped it, and was playing...
At that point, I decided to register the game and clicked the register button on the first screen and it took me to a the paradox website where you register the game.
So, from my experience, there is NO DRM if you buy it from Aegod's workshop site. I do not know from other websites. Also, if you buy it from Aegod's website, they are giving away the 1898 Spanish American war scenario which was supposed to be for preorder. This is because their workshop is not really set up for preorders so they did this for regular customers.
To get the scenario, you would have to go to Aegod's forums and PM the developer (Philip Thibault).

I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't ask for the serial number either...

Purchase before June 14th at 10AM Pacific Time and receive the Spanish-American War 1898 DLC for Free!
DLC is available on the Steam version also for free.
I'm still on the fence about this. I have a fair few grand strategy games and don't seem to have been grabbed by any of them and the icon sits on my desktop for months without being touched...and I am not convinced this wouldn't suffer the same fate.
