Nice post. Gives me hope on a game in which I'm currently being run out of Russia.

Great job there, keep at it. Looks like you are giving it a run. Thats the key is circle and capture. I believe its the single most important tactic the german player must use. Capture as much stuff as you can. Tag it and Bag it i say!!

Just to update everyone -- situation now back to normal. April 1943, front stabilised, lost 6 Pz divisions trying for a final encirclement. Now digging in like mad for the summer Soviet onslaught. Likely outcome of offensive? Added 1 year to war. Probably made Soviet more cautious in 1943 offensive which will slow him down, plus little pressure on mountain front to south, lots of casualties however.
The lesson is not that one can recover from a 1941 hiding but rather that, in other games, if you can hold the Russian very deep until say 1943, then you can run away, build a line and his supply lines will give way eventually. Best time for this attack to achieve a minor victory from defeat would be the winter of 1944; even in 1943 it would work a treat. 1942? Nah -- just too many months to go.

I probably can't win the game; I probably can't retake much ground (I disbanded all my FBDs to save manpower - another lesson learned). But it doesn't matter. I have had a hugely entertaining few days and, by hanging in there, have learned a lot about the way the game works.
Meine Kameraden Axis players... play to the end!
Ha! That's great! Well done! [&o]
The Soviet player had his own problems with advancing too far too fast, and then got cocky. "Meh, that panzer break through is just a nuissance, a pathetic last gasp - Battle of the Bulge in the East...'
As the man said "Don't get cocky!"
There is sometimes something to be said for sticking it out. Even if you don't win, a close loss is still nothing to be ashamed of, as long as it was a good game.

Not late war, Flavius... this is December 1942 !! It's an imposing defence born of incompetence at the gates of Moscow in october 41
Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory! [:D]
Okay, not quite, but I love that phrase.

Great job for sticking it out! The Grand Campaign was made for a full war. A loss in a good game is still fun, then you can apply what you learned in a rematch.
