speedtester sites are notorious for being way off the mark.
If you have some free webspace your ISP has provided, upload and download a large file via that and monitor the transfer stats. That will give the most accurate result as to your real throughput due to the least amount of IP hops or going 'off net' to some third party site.
cheers

True, however a before and after comparison is a reasonable way to indicate speed.
Also my other means of comparing d/l speed is this time last year, it took a couple hours plus to D/l a 2 gig file today about 15 minutes.

Hi all,
Just by way of comparison, I'm in Canberra and using our local telco TRANSACT which has fibre to the node. My results are:

G'day Excuse my ignorance Dave, but is that different to ADSL2, and in comparison to others perhaps I shouldn't complain about my speed. One thing I have noticed is the speed hasn't changed much on the Matrix server. I d/l Panzer Corps the other day and in comparison to previous games I have d/l prior to the internet upgrade there was no noticeable difference. On the the other hand, at Gamersgate the recent d/l of a game was much faster.

Dude that's weak. Ping time is good but I get ~16 down and 6 up on wireless 4G through Verizon here.
I thought fiber was 'good' ?

Although I get about 20/1 on coax though TWC. I'm seriously thinking of dumping TWC and going all 4G.

Transact can provide FTTH I thought - are you sure you're on fibre, they are not even full rate ADSL1 speeds.
Then again, you're using a third party speed tester site.
cheers

Yes it is ifferent to ADSL 2, which runs on your standard copper phone wire. But as others have pointed out it is not as good as some of the latest tech.
BTW download times are affected by both your capacity and that of the server at Matrix. So you may find that the limitation is at Matreix's end, not yours.

Chris,
Yes it does have fibre to the home in the newer suburbs, but where I live was one of the first places they rolled out to ten years ago, so I'm on fibre to the node. I have yet to meet anyone ho gets full ADSL speeds. The average in Canberra is below 50%.

On the ADSL speed issue again, I think i should get the best possible advertised speed, because the exchange has just been updated, I'm about 900 metres from the exchange, and my town and surround has a population of around 200 to 300 houses. The only question is the age of the copper wire I guess. I hate to say this, but I'm the happiest I have ever been with my internet and comparing it with others on ADSL, I'm doing well. I hope Telstra not monitoring this site [:D][:D]
