You make it sound so simple Lieste [&o] I think biting off more than I can chew is my major problem here. As you say, taking the edge of the village before assaulting the objective would be simpler and more achievable. Also the night attack seems a good plan Phoenix. More experimentation needed I think.

waiting for patch before playing again. Find the lone AT unit attack or defence a bit annoying :)

Starbuck, Haven't noticed that one. Though I have been irritated by mortar platoons in the vanguard. But then that only happens if you give attack orders and I can't now recall the last time I did that (as opposed to 'Move' etc). Would be nice if, as Simovitch suggests above, attacks could be more attractive after the patch. You sure the support (or HQ) unit in the vanguard behaviour will be addressed in the patch?

Playing Advance to the Sure now, as allies. First time I've tried this scenario. Any tips, anyone? Lieste? Seems wide open on the left flank, so far, so sending the 26th up there, basically.

I find allied AT units difficult to shift and they are seemingly capable of attack. Small units including HQ and mortars seem to hold up attacks. They should be easy meat for a inf coy but they seem capable of holding even Bn groups?

The towed AT platoons have been absorbed back into the Line Coys, except for Regimental assets. HQ's and mortars leading the way have been address but you still see the occasional support unit getting seperated from the main body, it can't be helped sometimes.

Stories of the small force holding up the larger onslaught were not uncommon in the compartmentalized Ardennes battlefield (and on Hell's highway for that matter[;)]). In an attack up a forest road I find myself breaking off the lead line company for an assault as soon as a potential target appears in my line of advance. A bit of well placed artillery or an airstrike will then keep the main group moving, usually.

Numerous tries later I have achieved a heartwarming Marginal Defeat!! Given my earlier attempts I rank this as a vast improvement. I can now take and hold Monschau and get troops contesting both Hofen North and South. I was let down by the 2nd Bn 751 Gren who insisted on wandering around the countryside picking daisies rather than joining in the assault. Definitely something to work on though.

I did notice however that despite the Monschau objective being controlled by me and being green the completed bar didn't rise at all, any clues why?

I think you gain points in relation to how long you hold the objective for. In some cases objectives are only 'live' from or for a certain date time group

To secure an objective you need to have a ten to one ratio of friendly to enemy combat power.

But isn't that included in the objective turning green?

Which raises the question: sometimes I get a message that I have lost control of an objective, but I can't see any enemy troops in the area (like at night). So is occupation as reported based on your own intelligence, or is the absolute knowledge of the game engine applied, in which case it is some magical source of intell all by itself.

I realise that you need the ten to one ratio but as springel says, surely that's what you have when the op turns green. I achieved this AND held it green for at least one day yet the progress bar and the percentage info read zero. On any other scenario I've played I see progress in these bars. Fairly certain that the Monschau obj is active for the entire game.

Sometimes you get points for occupation - here you need to grab early and hold.. other objectives only have completion points - here you only need to secure it immediately prior to scenario end. In practice you'll want to treat both the same, grabbing them cheaply, but as early as possible, but the choice of two similar options may be guided by which option has the higher proportion of occupation points.

Ah! That will explain it, thanks Lieste. It may also help with gaining a victory if I can get some troops onto all the VP locations just before the end in order to deny enemy VP's.

Careful with that as a policy - while his VL and points may be similar to yours they could differ a lot -  he could score heavily for occupation, while you score heavily for completion for example or vice versa.

Didn't think of that. You're right.
