this btn is hit hard two turns in a row... still don´t know why my opponent is flying three times more ground attacks than attacks on airfields... does suit me very well though... this is also reflected in the aircraft loss list with the Japanese losses nearly on par with the Allied ones as apart from the PH attack we didn´t suffer from airfield attacks...

Wake defenders didn´t have much of a chance even though the enemy wasn´t that strong... wonder if Midway is the next target...



the enemy lost a CVE compliment of Kates and lots of nav search floatplanes over Singapore today, quite nice... we lose the Marine Wildcats at Wake, a pity to lose those ac as every "advanced" fighter is worth the weight in gold at this stage of the war... think it´s obvious that the enemy is going to go for Mersing which is more than just a bold move IMO as there hasn´t been a single bomb being dropped on Singapore so far, our fighters there are in excellent shape and have shot down twice the number of ac than we´ve lost there so far and Force Z hasn´t been damaged nor spotted so far... my three dozen torp bombers have been training since Dec 7th and will be flown to Singapore as well as Force Z has been given orders to close into the Palembang are to attack if I see a chance to do so, well knowing that attempting a surface combat engagement is always silly as the Allied as you usually lose far more than you gain... we´ll see...

can only say it again, I really love the split tube design as this seems to work very well and just gives you a far more realistic feeling when you see ships being targetted with numbers of torps appropriate for the targetted ship type... pity only one torp has hit Kongo but I´m pretty sure it isn´t FOW... a nice start here, this attack has lead me to the decision to move our torp bombers to Singapore and set them to attack at two hexes range as Mersing got no airfield so I doubt there will be any aircover for the enemy ships there... Force Z has also been ordered to engage, while having a real bad feeling doing so... I can also see me writing about how silly it is to engage Japanese SC TF with Allied SC TF...

this TF was spotted yesterday and I was sure it´s going to go straight to Kuching so I´ve ordered two DD squadrons to engage it as I saw some nice chance here against an invasion TF without a dedicated SC TF covering it... well, received two messages of our two TF engaging the enemy and what happened? n o t h i n g... oh how I love it... to see one of the DD squadrons then only being able to move 3 hexes back from Kuching while being set to full speed while the other one moved 9 hexes back to it´s homeport (Billiton) just made my day again... naval movement anyone? being fully refueld and not having spent any op points as the engagement just didn´t happen there is once more no reason why the TF should only move 3 or 4 hexes during a whole phase...

ok, 1500 assault value is quite a force with more Japanese coming down the peninsula from the North... Singapore has reached fort level 3 already thanks to the nice defense of our fighters there and no IJ bombs raining on our base so far... we might be lucky and reach level 4 but that´s going to be a hard task as it might not take much longer to have my opponent finally bringing his Zero units from the Philipines to Malaya which would end Allied air superiority there in no time, even if we might take down some more Zeroes... problem is we´ve got no reserve, the enemy has... [:(]

for tomorrow night Force Z is tasked to engage shipping a Mersing, retiring to Singapore to be under a Cap umbrella of nearly 160 Allied fighters which should not be needed as mortar should have limited his Betty/Nells´ range to not run into my Cap at Singapore again...

here´s my before mentioned counterattack out of Clark field. There were fewer enemy units yesterday so I´ve ordered the shock attack to drive them back up the coast but the enemy was able to march in some more units today, bringing it´s assault value up to 718 which was quite shocking to me when I saw the unit count during the battle... I knew it was a big gamble but thought it would be well doable as we´re talking about a clear hex with surely both sides not being prepared for this target at all... Allied base av of 1243 made me hoping for an adjusted av of 1000 which we failed to achieve but the 865 adjusted av were sufficient to achieve the needed 2:1 and forcing the Japanese forces to retreat. This was the first bigger engagement between the so far victorious IJ forces and the defending US forces and it´s an Allied victory... we also suffer a lot of squads destroyed but forcing the enemy to retreat means achieving far more casualties than we could by defending and having the enemy attack us... I see this as a nice victory that will buy us some time for sure as especially the enemy tank units could be of use elsewhere while they have to spend quite some time for R&R now... speaking about offensives, this will probably the only offensive success in the Philipines, it´s now time to prepare for the defense, hopefully those disabled squads recover soon...

Well, it´s hard to teleport more troops into the hex but it would have been more than easy to stall my attack in this open hex and make it fail miserably... weather forecast was pretty bad for this hex so I´ve hoped for the IJ bombers not being able to support the enemy ground troops but in fact, weather was great there... but what did the enemy do? bomb Manila with 100+ IJNAF bombers... can´t believe it...

I would have used every ship to bombard, all available IJNAF and IJAAF bombers on ground attack and my house of cards would have collapsed so easily that the enemy would have taken the Philipines two months earlier than planned as my attack would have failed and the end result would probably have been to be routed out of the hex in two or three turns suffering disastrous losses... I don´t know what kind of opponents mortar had so far, but if he showed the same performance against them and won easily so that he can´t find any opponents on his national forum then I wonder how these guys are playing... [&:] with the enemy reinforcements and some bomber strikes alone it would have been easily to stop our troops...

overall I get the feeling that "Sir Robin" is more and more "outdated" and now it's "attack with all you have"... should make early games more interesting... nevertheless I think that a few ships the Allies usually lose with this forward defense might be useful later on as well... - but suum cuique!

Just a generic question, are you playing with automatic device upgrades on or off (i do not know the exact name, the squad type migration of outdated squads).

thx. Well, I´m doing a Sir Robin but that doesn´t mean I wouldn´t take the opportunity to hurt the enemy if he lets me do so. [:D] Mortar let me because he didn´t react at all on my advance while he could well have slept me. To me, a Sir Robin is the only really good idea the Allied can have. Sure, there are those games when an Allied player can hold Java, Timor, Burma or whatever theatre, but to me, that´s mostly because of a fault of the Japanese. If you outnumber the enemy 4+:1 in everything then it´s your own fault if you fail to crush your enemy, generally speaking. If the Japanese fails to go for the historic conquests then he just, ehm, failed. I´m usually trying to draw a line where my real defense starts and normally that isn´t within the SRA, nor would I normally try to defend Burma or throw in the kitchen sink early on to defend something I don´t have to defend because there´s just no reason to do so. Does this make one famous? No. Is it succesful 95% of the time? Yes. [:D] I´ve done far more Japanese PBEMs than I have done Allied ones (in WITP and AE) but I haven´t had a single Allied PBEM when I´ve lost an area I really cared about. As the Allied, you don´t have to do spectacular things, spectacular things often end in spectacular screw ups. As the Allied, you have to move forward methodically. Don´t disperse, use the hammer, move forward on a target, build up, move forward, rinse and repeat. In the end, that might be rather boring but succesful, pretty much what they´ve done in real life too. And then the question, what does one prefer, winning boring or losing spectacular? It´s kind of like the Klitschkos in boxing or what Sampras has been for years in tennis.

Which leads to the question, what do I really have to defend at all cost? The West Coast? Sure. Australia? Sure. India? Sure. The rest of the Pacific? Not really. Anything else? Probably not to be honest as you can use off map movement to get from one side of the map to the other. If you couldn´t you would also have to include New Zealand and the South East Pacific in the "to be defended at all cost list". In my last PBEM against Rainer I didn´t even do an attack through the Pacific, when the game ended, I haven´t attacked a single of those atolls because there just wasn´t a reason for me to do so. With my counterattack out of Clark I´ve probably saved one target somewhere to be attacked by a 400+ av force because instead of moving on after the PI have been lost, these routed troops have to rest. Pick your target at will that could be taken out by those troops.

we´ve started with "replacements off" so no units will upgrade units if I don´t set them to "replacements on". Instead of using this toggle right from the start you can of course also easily turn off all replacements in the LCU screen.

don´t get my words wrong please, I know they are often being read as rude and exxagerated even if that wasn´t my intention. I don´t think that it was a disastrous result for him, let alone should this lead to quiting. What I wanted to say is that we are not even two weeks into the campaign and I have seen so many things I totally fail to understand that I just had to wonder how experienced mortar really is. Like I´ve said, first I was thinking about a bait, but then... and that wasn´t the first thing to wonder, look at the PH attacks. Vals against my port a couple of times while my airfield was left alone? All those senseless ground attacks while my major airfields are untouched and my crap fighters take down more and more enemies? I made this comment because mortar kind of said he would be such a well experienced player that noone wants to play him on his national forum anymore and this is what makes me wondering, at least during the first two weeks of the war. I haven´t done anything exceptional at all but the Japanese already have maneuvered in a couple of situations that aren´t that great, nothing being disastrous IMO but absolutely surprising to me as this is something I´m not used to see from a Japanese player. I have to say, I can of course be surprised in the coming months/years and he will soon start to dish out some crushing blows to me. If I end up being whiped from the map I´m sure my humble opponent will also have problem finding an opponent on our forum. [;)]

Well, sometimes the first months of the game are just too boring for the japanese side that even some experienced players "take shortcuts" and just agree on some level of stupidy for exchange with speed of expansion...
[If I were start another PBEM campaign that would probably be the may '42 campaign for the reasons mentioned above [;)] ]

No meant the "Added After 6 months, an expired pooled device (sqd or engineer type) will slowly convert to the upgraded version; if japan, obsolete devices back to the raw materials [MEM]". It is an realism option as far as i know and for new games it it by default turned on. So it is turned on ? Just want to know how good/bad it works so i am searching AARs where it is used.

like I´ve mentioned already, after Kongo was hit by a sub, Singapore´s airfield filled up with 160 fighters and three dozen torp bombers and the IJ airforce not really doing anything against that circumstance and Mersing not having an airfield I have ordered Force Z to intervene with the landings at Mersing, well knowing that it is a dumbass idea to send in Allied ships to tangle with Japanese ships no matter what date in the war it is...

I´ve expected to meet a BB lead TF covering the invasion but it was far worse as we meet the well feared enemy heavy cruisers on steroids... I had Palliser in command as the best choice for Force Z but that didn´t help and the battle starts off with the IJN crossing the T... after the initial storm of Japanese 20cm shells raining down on our ships and taking out two of our CL without doing anything in return CL Dragon was already lying dead in the water when she was hit by two long lances to finish her off... up to that point non of our ships scored a single hit on the enemy, this while being 1000 yards away from the enemy... I love the Japanese super hero Allied dumbass sailor design... plain luck saw CL Dragon fire a spread of torps towards CA Suzuya just before sinking and two torps slammed into the heavy cruiser severly damaging it... that happened at the time when three of our ships were already in sinking condition or have already sunk without doing anything in return... the shell hits on the enemy cruisers were non penetrating and mean nothing, without the lucky torp spread on Suzuya the enemy would have sunk two CL, a DD and putting another one in serious condition without even having a scratch...

gamewise I guess many players would trade two old British CL and a DD for an IJN CA all the time but speaking of real life I don´t think this would have seen as a great trade for the Allied, let alone what this meant in the loss of life and I try to judge the losses by how they would have been seen in real life as judging them in game terms has brought the consensus to a level far over the top IMO as most often the loss of several ships with thousands of sailors in fast order isn´t seen as a tragedy

I always see enemy heavy cruisers as the most dangerous, followed by the Yamatos... biggest problem as always is the IJN experience that will never be matched by any Allied warship (except BB Richelieu IIRC) and technological developments pretty much mean nothing during the war when you match them with the IJN experience...

after engaging the enemy heavy cruisers we meet what I´ve expected to mee, an enemy TF lead by a Kongo class BB which I nominally don´t rate as as powerful than the POW (ignoring crew exp which then makes it superior to POW again)... this time the engagement at least didn´t start off with the enemy crossing the T and the first shells were exchanged at 4000 yards instead at 1000 yards against the enemy cruisers... and again it was an IJN heavy cruiser to easily taking out the last one of our light cruisers when Atago put several 20cm shells into Danae to finish her off with a long lance... of course, we again did NO damage at all up to that point having several ships set on fire already and a light cruiser sunk... pretty much what I would expect which makes it even sillier that I send my ships in and I get what I deserve for not listening to my own advise... and you know what? I´m sure I´m going to do it again... so then it was time for POW and Repulse to exchange some heavy shells with Haruna and I was totally amazed to see Haruna´s main batteries to fail penetrating POW´s belt at 4000 yards... Haruna repeatadly scored heavy shell hits on POW but all failed to penetrate... Haruna alone scored more hits on POW than POW and Repulse together scored hits on Haruna (this alone has a quality of it´s own) but unlike Haruna´s shells failing to penetrate, POW´s 14 inch and Repulse´s 15 inch shells slammed into the enemy BB with three of them penetrating the belt and one exploding in the superstructure... unfortunately those three penetrating hits didn´t do as much damage as I hoped to see and then the battle was over already with another CL lost for some damage to an enemy BB...

I expect Haruna to be sent out of the line of fire though and more than halve a dozen subs have later been vectored in trying to engage the damaged BB... now to do something for my rant reputation I wonna tell you something about how the naval movement looked like... my SC TF moved in at full speed to Mersing, range 7 hexes (max range 8 hexes) during the night phase and engaged the enemy ships during the night, leaving us with the rest of our TF in absolutely good shape, still being able to move 8 hexes at full speed... so far so good... no... because while the TF has Singapore as it´s homeport and the range for ships going from Mersing to Singapore is only 3 hexes, the god damned TF only moved f*cking TWO hexes during the day phase, means ending up one hex OUTSIDE of Singapore where we had 150+ fighters to fly Cap over Force Z coming back to Singapore... oh god damn this is so bugged I can´t believe I´m once more the only one complaining about it... [:@] I could understand a two hex movement if my ships would be damaged but when they are fully operational and should move 8 hexes during the day while they only have to move THREE friging hexes and still fail this makes me sick just once more and bringing me close to the state I have been in when finally throwing in the towel after five years of playing some four months ago... what did my GF say? "Why have you started playing this game again when you know it doesn´t work how you suppose it to do?"... usually I´ve got a quick tongue but at that moment I didn´t know what to answer her... [:D]

so that failed naval movement could have lead to a total disaster losing Force Z to attacking Betties and Nells with my fighters waiting at Singapore making it worse than it already was, luckily there was no air attack, for what reason ever... I´m done with naval movement and Force Z is bugging out of the area now as it just doesn´t work... I´m already looking forward to losing my fast transport TFs due to wonky movements...

you can call it bold, you can call it careless to land at Mersing with Singapore´s airfield being fully operational and having 150+ fighters there togther with torpedo bombers and Force Z nearby but in the end we achieve nothing as our torpedo bombers didn´t fly... so we tangle with some halve hearted sweeps coming in, taking out more Zeroes today and achieving a new record of Zeroes shot down in a single day... 90% of the kills going to the AVG, the Buffalos are just targets, mainly due to the crappy pilot skills...

quite a big strike in the end that was hit hard with lots of Zeroes shot down over Singapore and many more crashing on their way home... if you look at the total Zero losses in the next post one can figure out that this is going to drain the enemy pools (how many Zeroes the enemy has to start with is something I don´t know but I doubt he´s got hundreds of them in the pool, nor has he got the production capacity to lose that many so early on)... at the end of this sweep there were no more Allied fighters in the air though... total number of fighters airborne was a little disappointing considering radar and 150+ available...

Just a generic question, are you playing with automatic device upgrades on or off (i do not know the exact name, the squad type migration of outdated squads).

we´ve started with "replacements off" so no units will upgrade units if I don´t set them to "replacements on". Instead of using this toggle right from the start you can of course also easily turn off all replacements in the LCU screen.

No meant the "Added After 6 months, an expired pooled device (sqd or engineer type) will slowly convert to the upgraded version; if japan, obsolete devices back to the raw materials [MEM]". It is an realism option as far as i know and for new games it it by default turned on. So it is turned on ? Just want to know how good/bad it works so i am searching AARs where it is used.

wow, didn´t even know about that feature and I´m not at home at the moment so I can´t check the settings. When I checked the settings on the first turn I didn´t notice this one though which makes me wonder if it is something you can turn on/off. It´s a nice feature though.

if AE hasn´t changed it, then op points from the night phase seem not to count during the day, which is also what I´ve seen often enough with several engagements during the night and the TF still moving normally during the day. So how would that work then? This would have to be bugged then, it´s either a or b working correctly or not working correctly. Problem is that both things happen in the game, usually b, means fighting during the night against dozens of enemy TFs while still moving full speed and full range during the day. Naval bombardment anyone? That expands 2/3 of the main gun ammo, far more than was used during above mentioned engagement and still sees the ships move full range out of the target. Fuel was no issue and what has been in Force Z has nearly had no damage at all, the TF still showed 8 hex max range the next day. Funny thing was that one DD actually was split off Force Z, guess what, that one managed to get to Singapore and that one was a damaged ship.

Naval combat, maybe even air attacks, eat up ship ops points and those reduce movement, right? 8 hex movement a phase, 16 during a full day, if it only moved 7+2=9(/16=56%) fighting 2 battles, thats petty much the amount of movement I'd expect it to, perhaps 1 or 2 hex more. Add possible damage due to combat or sailing at full speed reducing speed by 2-3 knots from say the already slowest ship and thats it even without refueling escorts.

Also looks like the damaged DDs Vampire and Express werent removed from the TF due damage after the first battle, so that must have been the reason together with battle ops points.

if AE hasn´t changed it, then op points from the night phase seem not to count during the day, which is also what I´ve seen often enough with several engagements during the night and the TF still moving normally during the day. So how would that work then? This would have to be bugged then, it´s either a or b working correctly or not working correctly. Problem is that both things happen in the game, usually b, means fighting during the night against dozens of enemy TFs while still moving full speed and full range during the day. Hmm... How about threat tolerance and routing/waypoints? It probably didnt retreat from surface threat but could have changed its route back to Singapore because of an air threat. Its possible the TF didnt take the shortest route in or out despite of whatever was the showed to be the route in the order phase unless you had set direct-absolute and forced waypoints and full speed.
