About a week ago in my PBEM I had a large amount of radio tranmissions sig int message at Kendari (I'm allied). I vectored some subs into the area and sent a long range recon flight over which spotted a CVE in the base (it was actually one or more CV's). The next turn my opponent sortied (realising he had been seen) and one of my subs put a couple of torpoedoes into a fleet carrier. I don't think it sank but still, I'm smiling.
Just got the confirmation and the Vic point increase- Soryu sunk while attempting to reach Manila.
First CV sunk in our PBEM (and it's Jan 1943!)

Intel reports are only useless if you play as the IJN. Allied SigInt will give quite a few precious nuggets.

The most frequently useful information (as many have noted), is the "unit prepping" and "unit on transport" messages. I keep track of what units are prepping for which locations and the instant one shows up "on the transport", I know the invasion is coming. Your opponent may try to fake you out with a different destination, but prepping takes a loooong time, and that's the real, non-fakeable clue as to where it's going. Having a few regional SCTFs sprinkled around the map usually gives you enough time to lay a trap, plus air units can quickly be concentrated near the destination.
