I just started playing ToS recently and played several champ vs
inferior matches winning easily. I then build a team and we won but one champ was killed because the head of the mech was destroyed
In the second battle a different team mate was killed ejecting and I did not earn enough to repair the mechs... well this went on for a few teams.
So I started playing inferior vs inferior battles to practice.
I don't win them all, but again I'm still learning.
I them decided I needed to do some reading, and the word document available from the ToS web page is an excellent addition to what is in the manual. You will also want to read the new and old tutorials.
A lot of reading for a 10 year old. My 8 year old son wins with champs against inferior, ok just but he can do it. Most of the time.
I find its a lot of work to design a team buy mechs just to have them killed, so spend some time playing in random games.
When you win consistently with different mech combinations you are probably ready to design your own team.
Take some notes on what Titans works for you.

In Warring Suns, my Squad currently has 3 Needlers and 1 Icelord. So far they are unbeatable. S.R.M's are just completely devastating the enemy.
I even defeated an enemy squad that had 2 wolfpacks and a Green Dragon [200t]. I did end up paying well over $100k in repairs but that is o.k.
Missiles seem to be ruling the TOS:WS game.

Why on earth would someone -ever- want to hexed in ToS? In my opinion, hacking your jocks is pointless since you can make a tournament team, as it has been already said over and over in this topic. Besides, most of the times I played so far away in time, I picked "random teams", which is the usual choice except for tourneys and Ultra Tourneys (If they still exist hehe).
And... Some of you might remember the "Rodent Omega"... hehehehehehehehehehe...
That was one very special titan...
