No Captain, that was not dumb. What the gracious lady Gräfin Zeppelin described in her example of a SigInt report is all the Japanese player gets in the form of intel. No "Troops aboard Maru bound for ABC" or anything else that specific. True, as an Allied player, you have to work to gain useful information from all the data gathered during the daily SigInt reports. But if you were to play the Japanese side, all you get is "Stuff seems to be gathered at ABC". No "bound for" info much less unit specific intel. It's much more difficult to gain useful information from this data compared to the Allied capabilities which I believe was GZ's intent. So if you think it's rough playing the Allied side, try the Japanese side for a game or two as GZ does and you'll see her point.

Regards, Paul

Sorry sport but it was dumb and non-value added. Ridiculing some one is not making little about something. Try to be professional about postings in the technical section. The Allied SIGINT is not providing info that WAS provided historically. I have seen info about ships with XYZ unit bound for info ... but no HQ target info .. which Rochefort gleaned about Midway for Nimitz.

Firstly, GZ did provide you with exactly the answer needed for you to count 2 and 2 together, something you seem to be reluctant to do: Some things in the game simply don´t
work like you are CINCPAC, e.g. you don´t get preanalysed intel served on a plate. You either understand that ot you are playing the wrong game.

Secondly, you get exactly what you describe, but simply not when you personally prefer to (which would be really ridiculous). SigInt, besiders other stuff, hands you snippets of
units planning for targets, radio intercepts of fleets, and troops being loaded on transports for specific destinations. Sometimes the planning unit is an HQ, and sometimes the rest
fits together and you get an overall picture. Sometimes. But it takes a bit of work to sort it out.

And thirdly, you asked a question which belonged into the war room in the first place, not the technical section. Roger tried to tell you this, but you probably read only part of the responses.
Ridiculing someone over there is perfectly legal. Its called "joke". [:'(]

Sophistry.

You´re a bad girl rubbing thin skinned captains the wrong way. What did you expect?

(doh, I probably get banned for this)

As i understand it every Japanese merchant ship was REQUIRED by the IJN to send a noon position report either in the clear or some cipher that a child could crack with his Captain Midnight Decoder Ring. That should result in a lot of AK xxxx Maru located at (xxx, yyy) even allowing for the fact that there's too much intel to react to all the time. It should allow for Allied subs to conduct the historical anti-shipping campaign (at least taking shots even if they don't explode). I haven't seen many contacts by submarines in either PBEM or AI games.

According to roughly 50% of the forum (a rough figure) the Allies don't need any more advantages to wipe the Evil Empire off the map........not everyone agrees though.... like the other 50%.

Surveys of professional statisticians have shown that over 85% of all statistics are made up. [:D]

My understanding is that the merchant code was not broken until 1944. I can't find a source other than Wikiepedia and they say November 1942 and that is was a lucky break. I am not a fan of wikipedia so I will continue to look through my personal library.

Something interesting that I ran into while looking.

http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/Japan/I ... l#contents

Edit: "The Codebreakers" by David Kahn states that the code was broken in 1943 and resulted in about one third more sinkings than would have normally happened on the convoy routes to the Philippines and the Marinas.

While a third more is important it is not like every merchant ship had it's signals picked up or was located. Between radio signal skip and human factors it helped but it was not absolute.

Mmmm, you should be seeing IJN ships all over the map (almost) randomly every turn as their DL is popped up to 1 or 2 and then they disappear unless you get another hit then next turn. You'll see it in both the reports and on the map. Map is a lot easier to see.

I've been play Ironman lately (as allies!) and I've got IJN spotting everywhere. Allied intel is fantastic. As someone above noted, if you organize it after a month or two you pretty miuch know where every unit is and exactly what you will be facing for landing at any base. You also know where they are going, about when they will get there, and be able to radily conjecture what they will be bringing to support. The nicest thing is being able to keep track of those da__ Nettie air groups, which in Ironman I think there are +50 of them.

Please cut out the name calling, personal attacks, and bickering. One more post with anything like a personal attack and this thread is locked.

The thread is about SIGINT, not the person who started it.
