While we're investigating further, can you update your sound driver please? The one you have now appears to be from 2005. Also, can you confirm (look in your Control Panel under Add/Remove Programs) which version(s) of .NET Framework you have installed?

Regards,

In your case it triggers on the Biases file - running any mods?

I don't think my problem is the same as yours and MikeKraemer. As I stated before, my processing doesn't get far enough to access the Biases.txt file and consequently I don't get a crash log. After looking at the Biases.txt file, it looks like a data file that packs a matrix for all the different races in the game. I guess if you're trying to pack data into a cell that doesn't exist, it might be the cause of your crash. Have you guys tried running the DW extended mod 2.0.2 Mod? That mod increases the number of races in the game and could be the cause.

I'm running a fresh reinstall up to Legends without any mods. When applying the 1.7.0.20 beta update and try running the program nothing happens (not even a loader screen). My 1.7.0.17 beta update works fine though.

Good luck to all of us, as soon as Eliot frees up some time from getting Shadows launched, he may be able to sort out all of our problems.

Here is the text of the file that it blows out reading:

'Distant Worlds Racial Biases - version 1.5.0.0
'determines natural bias of each race towards other races
'this bias can be either positive or negative
'maximum value is 50, minimum value is -50
'each row determines the natural bias feelings of the race named at left to all races
'  each bias value (column) in the row is how the named race feels towards the race matching the index number for the column
'  e.g. Ketarov has natural +10 bias towards other Ketarovs (race index 0), +10 bias towards Atuuk (race index 1), 0 bias towards Gizurean (race index 2), etc

Your Biases.txt file looks exactly like mine. Evidently nothing has changed between patches 1.7.0.17 Beta and 1.7.0.20 Beta with respect to this file. Must be where the data is being read into. Only Eliot could tell you that.

Ravin,

Just a hunch, but please try installing .NET 4.0 as well and see if that makes any difference.

Mike,

Have you tried an uninstall, delete folder, reinstall? A crash with that file on a clean installation shouldn't be possible.

Regards,

- Erik

Hi Erik,

A rather good hunch at that. Installed Net Framework 4.0, updated its files at Windows Update, performed a warm boot, installed DW patch 1.7.0.20 beta and guess what----- IT RAN.

You can consider this thread closed with respect to my problem. Thanks for your time and effort Erik. Much appreciated. OH! And you might consider changing the rig specs for DW Legends to include Net Framework 4.0.

Lastly, good luck to you in the next couple of days. Hunker down for the next snow storm moving into your area. If I could, I'd box up some of the warmth we have down here and send it up to you guys.

Erik: Installing the latest Net Framework 4.5 solved the issue for me. I didn't try installing the older version 4.

1. When can we expect more information on Shadows?
2. What half year can we expect Shadows?

Hi Sithuk,

I believe if you don't install the Net Frameworks in succession it may cause problems further down the line. Each Net Framework builds upon the preceeding ones. Microsoft has a Net Framework utility program which will uninstall versions of Net Framework as it isn't effective to uninstall with the control panel.

I ran into that problem a couple of years ago and it was a real pain getting all my ducks in a row. Just a heads up to you if your computer starts doing weird things in the future.

@ravincravin,
Just asking because I was running version -----16 ok, but as soon as I installed version -----20 (beta) my antivirus software (Avast), deleted the exe on start up. Just wondered if you were having the same problem, but obviously not.

Hi guys,

We'll be including .NET 4.0 in the next public beta update installer. Our bad for not realizing that some of the work for Shadows had created a new dependency for our Legends updates. .NET 4.5 will also work, but I'd suggest going with 4.0 unless you need 4.5 for now. 4.5 is a bit odd in that it tries to replace 4.0 but does not do so perfectly. Previous .NET revisions have been able to exist side by side and whichever one the program needed, you needed. In many cases newer versions could support older dependencies but not in all cases.

Regards,

- Erik

Would this .NET issue cause the game to run slower? I'm having memory issues with large game now so I have to exit DW and restart it often because game slows down so much.

I cannot speak about older systems but I have been using 4.5 since December of 2012 with no problems. No crashes with huge maps....yet.

My rig is an Toshiba r850 I5 2.5GHz laptop with 8GB ram.
