If your opponent did a Manila Strike day one and also intentionally went hunting for your carriers, there is no way I'd give him a mulligan.  If he demanded one, saying he'd quit if he didn't give it, I'd bid him adieu, chalk up your first victory, and start a new game with another opponent.

If, on the other hand, he's relatively inexperienced and made a fundamental but understandable newbie mistake, I'd be inclined to be more charitable.

Well it appears that the only newbie mistake he made was to forgot to switch over the KB from port strike to naval strike. I didn't even run into any CAP, either in the 001 file or in the Combat report. I did notice though that both the Combat Report as well as the replay made note that the KB's carrier support was unable to provide air cover, whatever that means. It sounds bad for him, but I know better than to count on that happening again so I don't see how it's exploitable.

After yesterday's turn, today's wasn't too bad.

I got a sub strike on one of his AVs which should sink it, which is always good, but that's about it. KB has completely disappeared from my radar and PH is still surrounded by subs, but my ASW forces are trying to fix at least one of those problems.

Now about finding those Carriers.

And here's last turn's Combat Report. Once I get a little better handle on this, I intend to try to start including pictures and maps as well, but one thing at a time.

Advice, for what it's worth:

1) Forget his carriers for now. You have bigger problems. They're probably running for the barn.

2) Figure out your Malaysia strategy NOW. You just gave away Beests at KB for nothing, and they're a keystone of your Singers defense. Get your Malaysia air force south and safe for now. Get your TBs where there are torpedo-carrying HQs. (Load the Air HQs with torpedoes; they come empty.)

LCU-wise, Malaysia starts with the divisions fragmented. Figure out rally points for the pieces and parts and get them moving. Abandon wherever they're sitting if need be. If you leave them in frags they'll be chopped to pieces fast. Figure out where you're going south-wise and get moving. If it's a full Sir Robin to Singers do that. Get your engineers south and start digging NOW.

3) See what I meant about the PI and evacuating air? His landings there are pretty standard. He'll have big sweep units in there in less than a week.

4) Did you get Hong Kong clear of anything that floats? If not, get those ships out now.

5) It's possible to get a lot of stuff out of the PI and DEI to the EAST, across the Pac. He will probably use the MKB and surface patrols to plug the routes to Timor and Oz. Get Penguin out of Guam today.

6) Collect the merchants and try to group them by speed. Pick some rally points and get them out of the way. I send a lot straight to CT, but opinions differ. But don't let him feast for free.

7) Figure out China's first month and get LCUs moving. You can adjust later. A lot of orphans start all over the country-side there.

8) If you can, protect USS Boise and USS Houston. Don't do what I did. (See my AAR.)

9) Start moving OZ LCUs to re-combine bases. Figure out if you want to defend western Oz or not.

10) Get the ANZAC units spread all over northern NG moving to PM. They can walk home if you move now. Figure out what you want to do about Rabaul. You might have a few days, you might have a few months.

11) Figure out where you have to have sea patrols and get the Cats there and set up sector search. You don't have enough Cats, so be realistic.

12) Get Dutch Harbor building an air base. It's winter and it's at 0. It will take half of forever to get to AF 1.

13) Get Midway pumped up with some kind of CD unit and a base force. Start building. If you have an xAK handy, go fetch the fighters off Wake and put them at Midway.

Lots more, but that's a start. Every day in December 1941 is like five in 1943. GET THE METAL MOVING! Complicate his targeting. Save ships. Especially save subs.

I had a massive post ready, detailing my ideas, but Firefox decided that it had to take a nap RIGHT NOW!!! and I lost it. Long story short, it looked a lot like this, but with a few different details.

1. I actually outran his carriers yesterday and am in the process of putting my CVTF's in a mutually supporting position. I'll head back to PH tomorrow if I don't hear from the KB by then. Sara left SD for PH yesterday too along with her escorts and should be here within 10 days, IIRC.

2. Yeah, I lost several good planes when KB fell. After the first turn's attempt at closing Singer's airfield, I dispersed the LBs to two other air fields, but left the Beasts at Singers, along with my Swordfish, and loaded the 224th AHQ's torpedoe inventory. Hope that works out, but we'll see.

3. He's already sweeping Manila with 60+ Zeroes a day, so I stood the USAAF down, hoping to get the damaged units repaired and ready to evacuate. I'm sending out the B-17s tomorrow too, I just need to finish buying them out. They'll be going to Soerabaja first, then Oz when the time comes.

4. HK is clear, I emptied it out yesterday and grabbed as much fuel as possible while doing so. I may not make it to port with it, but I'll keep it out of his hands.

5. I'm looking into running East and I had forgotten about the little AM at Guam, good catch. I haven't seen MKB though and haven't even gotten a whiff of it from aircraft sightings either. When I did see the KB though, I noted that it had 9 CVs and one or two CVLs showing up in the detection levels. I think he went with a Deathstar, so that just means I'll have to be extra careful in the CenPac until I see some sign of where it went.

6. Merchants are already moving, some to CT to form up supply convoys and more to Colombo, Bombay, Madras, Calcutta and Perth to form secondary convoy legs. I don't intend to let him feast on anything, much less do so for free.

7. I've got Chinese orphans moving left, right and center. I'm trying to take Ichang and Sinyang, the former to form a MLR and the latter to disrupt his supply lines. I'll let him retake Sinyang without too much of a fight, as it should buy me a little time. Forts are being built as well and supplies are being channeled where necessasary.

8. I'm going to try to protect the Boise/Houston group, as I'm rather attached to Boise, so they'll only stay as long as it takes me to get those British CAs on station. After that, the B/H group will head for Australian waters where the DDs will undergo refits to APDs and the Boise/Houston will join the San Francisco and Indianapolis, along with a handful of Porter class DDs, to help the Aussies and Kiwis.

9. Oz LCUs started moving yesterday to their defensive positions to recombine on site. The majority of them will go to the Eastern coastline, but a small detachment (approx a division and a half) will hold Perth and Western Oz. Also, I sent a BG of B-26s and a FG of P-39s to CT for transport to Oz. They should be here by the middle of Jan.

10. I've started air lifting the Anzac troops out of Lae, there's a Transport TF headed to Rabaul to pick up the troops there and I'll pick up the others as the situation allows.

11. My Cats are at Midway, Johnston, Christmas and Palmyra. Additionally I've got three groups of Cats at PH and another six groups on the West Coast, plus the one at Kodiak. Four groups will stay on the WC, one will join the one in NorPac and the last one will start hopping towards SoPac. The two groups of Cats in the PI will be leaving soon to provide coverage along Northern Oz and eventually along Western Oz.

12. Good point about DH, I had forgotten about the effect of winter on construction. I'm also prepping a force to hold Adak, so there's that as well.

13. I agree on Midway, so I started building forts yesterday and started prepping a CD unit and an ENG unit as well. I'll see what I can do about salvaging those Wildcats from Wake, there's got to be an xAKL somewhere closeby.

14. I started rebuilding the 3rd Motor Brigade in Melbourne, allowing them to take reinforcements. They'll form the heart of the defense of Townsville until I can get some further units on station. I hope I have enough time to get troops where I need them.

I've usually had to shuttle TBs in and out as needed. If they stay they get creamed. Also, a lot of Singers' near term future depends on what he does with northern Borneo and Singkawang.

Mixing CVLs and the KB is a rookie mistake IMO. Bigger is often not better. The MKB can cause all kinds of havoc around the DEI and PI. A lot more than a couple hundred more planes at Pearl, given the fuel/distance/time. Pearl is not a magic base, but many Japanese players think it is.

I'm not sure what he's doing with North Borneo, TBH. I've got scouts watching the approaches, but haven't seen any invasion ships yet. For that matter, I should be seeing more invasion TFs along the Malayan coast, but so far I only see one headed towards Mersing. I started moving the two Aussie brigades and a few other support units to Mersing on day 1, so I should be in position to welcome them.

In regards to the PP cost for pulling out those fighters, isn't that determined by the number of airframes left when you try to buy them out? If so, the two FG fragments in the PI should be fairly cheap. [8|] As for the B-17's, I'm aware that the D model has a longer range than the others, but since there's no replacement frames for them and these groups are sent back in April, I'm thinking of shuffling some of my other B-17 training groups around to use other air frames as they become available and using the spare D frames to support this BG in Northern Oz.

Since Midway is too exposed at this point, what level of naval support do you think I should post there? Just a couple of AOs and an AS which I can scramble out of the way should I need too or just build up the docks to refuel directly from the island and stock it well with AA and CD units?

You shouldn't post any valuable ships at Midway early in the war.  Putting them there is a great way to find them ambushed and sunk.  Your AO and AS are way too valuable to risk.  You might send forward to Midway some supply and reinforcements (one of the Pearl Marine CD units is prepping for Midway).  You can send in small TFs, breaking up the CD unit so that it comes in over time so that you don't risk losing it.

Good luck in Burma. If he's an experienced player (it appears that he's not) he'll roll you up back to the border of India and if he's done enough damage to your forces along the way, he'll keep on going. Against an experienced player, the only way you'll reinforce Pt. Moresby is if you do it immediately. You'll have time to get some US help defending Oz and in my opinion, PM is worth trying to hold as long as possible. Unless I missed it you didn't mention Darwin. The only thing to do there is to have regular supply convoys starting very quickly (from Perth I think) and load her to the gills so that she can hold out for a long time. His capacity to bomb your supplies there to oblivion will be nil for quite a while and you can move some of it to Katherine for safe keeping. Absolutely yes on getting as much oil out of Java and to Oz, you'll need it there, and the more you have there the more aggressive you will be able to be. I would think about Canton, Christmas, Palmyra and Johnston islands and move right away on them. Canton island would be a great forward base for his surface raiders and subs and all would be very valuable to him to place search planes on. You have to worry about your supply lines. Also Christmas can and may become an important base for you depending on how things develop. I would station cruiser forces at Pago Pago and Christmas to counter any AMCs he might send. Remember some of those have search planes. As to Force Z, consider this: They're the only relatively fast BBs you have, and if you want to be aggressive with your carriers, they would be nice to have along for escort (in a separate TF from the CVs). If you like that idea I'd send them to Aukland for safe keeping until your CVs arrive.

Don't let your TKs sit around doing nothing ever. Also don't forget that you can move fuel (less efficiently) with xAKs and AKLs. Also don't forget you can use their own fuel tanks as oilers to refuel your TFs where no other fuel is to be found.

edit: Yes I know the Brits will take a dim view of having PoW and Repulse escort the US CV's. Tell them to suck on it.

Oh, and don't try to use your carriers to evacuate the Wildcats on Wake. Just hit the withdraw button, they'll come back later.

So I've got a few questions about the IJN's composition. How many Carrier type ships (CV/CVL/CVE) do they start with? I know that there's six CVs in the KB normally and something like four or six CVLs/CVEs in the Mini-KB, but what about the others? Am I only looking at these to start with?

Also, I've yet to see a single IJN BB or CB and only a small number of CAs (less than four) so far. Usually they show up on day one, with a couple of the old IJN BBs bombarding KB in Malaya. Instead, all I've seen are Sendai class CLs and a few DDs here and there. Any ideas on where the rest of the IJN surface units may be? Is there something that I'm missing here?

That's kind of what I was leaning towards, but wasn't sure about dedicating LCUs which could be bombed as opposed to ships which could run. Granted, they'd probably still get sunk, but that was my thought. So how far back from the front do you guys usually build your sub bases? Would Christmas Is. work as a good base? I had already planned on building it up and was starting to gather the units needed to do so, but if it would make a good sub base, I'll just tweak the unit mix a little and incorporate that as well.

I've noticed his Zeros are sweeping at 23k feet.. do you not have an alt rule that limits planes to their second best altitude band?

You shouldn't post any valuable ships at Midway early in the war.  Putting them there is a great way to find them ambushed and sunk.  Your AO and AS are way too valuable to risk.  You might send forward to Midway some supply and reinforcements (one of the Pearl Marine CD units is prepping for Midway).  You can send in small TFs, breaking up the CD unit so that it comes in over time so that you don't risk losing it.

Do the CD unit and one more something (I like a base force, but your call) to get to the 6000 limit or just a scratch over it. I run 6120 there in most games and the supply hit is not a factor.

For the subs just put fuel there. They come out of Pearl armed and fixed. Just a drink and off to war. Highly historical too.

I'm not sure what he's doing with North Borneo, TBH. I've got scouts watching the approaches, but haven't seen any invasion ships yet.

Grabbing Miri and Brunei is one of the safest first/second turn moves there is. It gives Japan fuel right away. If he isn't doing that he's a newbie to be sure.

For that matter, I should be seeing more invasion TFs along the Malayan coast, but so far I only see one headed towards Mersing. I started moving the two Aussie brigades and a few other support units to Mersing on day 1, so I should be in position to welcome them.

Mersing is a possible good move on Turn 1. By turn 2 you can have TBs at Singers that eat this up unless he has the MKB or Kaga along. And you know where many of his light carriers are.

In regards to the PP cost for pulling out those fighters, isn't that determined by the number of airframes left when you try to buy them out?

Don't recall. I still think you have better use for the PPs.

If so, the two FG fragments in the PI should be fairly cheap. [8|] As for the B-17's, I'm aware that the D model has a longer range than the others, but since there's no replacement frames for them and these groups are sent back in April, I'm thinking of shuffling some of my other B-17 training groups around to use other air frames as they become available and using the spare D frames to support this BG in Northern Oz.

April is a lifetime for you now. There's no replacements, but the Zeros can't hurt them much either if you fix them between raids. You'll get a lot of work out of them before they go. And do you relaly want to pull them all the way back to Oz now? They can be of use more forward than that immediately. A lot of the B-17 groups in CONUS are P restricted and others are only 2 planes. There are, I think, a couple you can buy out. Not sure it it's worth it given the time to ship them elsewhere. Some players try to hop&skip planes across the PAc before they lose key islands, but I've never done this. A lot of ops losses and fatigue.

Nope, the only HRs we have are No strategic bombing of Japan from China until 1943 and only those allied naval units at sea on Dec 7 can be ordered.

Sure, I'll take the brunt of the pain in '42 and part of '43, but he's going to feel the pain from there on out, especially once I start getting those next generation fighters.

I've also got to be on guard for paradrops on dot bases. I don't expect him to try that until early in '42 but you never know. We'll see how that works out.

And another turn done. My Carriers didn't find the KB, so it's back to PH I go after detaching a couple of CAs and a squadron of DDs for escorts. This small SCTF is headed to Oz by way of Canton to refuel first.

Well, another day and another turn. There's a few things notable in this turn though. Lots of sub action, all on his side, plus the Houston/Boise TF corners the invasion fleet off the Northern Coast of Borneo, only to find out that the fleet is guarded by IJNS Chokai and five DDs. I lose one old four-stacker in the ensuing slugfest and the Houston is hurt pretty badly, but the Boise worked the Chokai over at close range and put a hurt on her, landing over a dozen hits, knocking out one of her 8" turrets, one of her TT mounts, penetrating the hull repeatedly and generally breaking things and killing people quick, fast and in a hurry. I don't think she'll sink, but Chokai is going to be in a fender and body shop for a while after this one.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a shot at the transports but considering how few CAs the IJN has, I'll take what I get here. Oh, did I mention that Force Z is moving in to clean up tomorrow? [:-] Time will tell how that works out, but I'm hoping that the damage was worth the prize.

Definately not a good turn for the Allies. There's a IJN SCTF loose in my shipping lanes between Manila and Soerabaja and they're wrecking havoc among my retreating support ships. To make matters worse, I lost Wake before I could extract my Wildcats and a Chinese Shock attack goes horribly wrong, resulting in massive casualties for no gain.

Could be a lot worse though, all things considered.

At last, some more good news for the Allies. It would appear that my opponent has forgotten to bring any interceptors with him to Miri to protect his newly acquired refinery there. I sortied 16 B-17Ds and came home with 14 hits for no losses. Not a bad day and if he doesn't defend it, I'll keep pounding on it.

In other news, the IJN SCTF that's been eating my ships is still on the loose and caught a few more retreating TFs. I lost a large xAP and an AS that I had planned on using at Perth, but I'll soon have more in place. More importantly, by keeping his TF occupied up near Manila, this is giving my other TFs a chance to make a break for Australia from Soerabaja, including all three of the Dutch floating docks, both Dutch AS and their lone AR. They may not be great for larger ships, but they'll work just fine on refitting my SS fleets at Perth.

Finally, PoW took a bomb hit at Singers while getting ready to head for the area East of Borneo. The damage isn't critical and I did manage to take about 10 Nells down in the exchange, but now the IJA/IJN know where PoW is and, more importantly, is not. That has got to change.
