Vehicles - I would just expand to around 200 for now. More if you use your Tank Rgt a lot and have high losses. The big thing is to have enough by June/July '42 when the various components of the 1st & 2nd Tank Division become available and you want them to come in at full TO&E.

I-Boats with Jakes vs Glens - My opponent did this and I had to ask him to go back. This was an impossibility due to the size of the Jake vs Glen on a sub. It also gives Japan a huge advantage in recon and naval search around Allied ports. If you opponent is not aware of this, I would ask him if it is OK.

Yes, absolutely correct. Some supply will slip through the 2 jungle hexes to get around Malacca. However, supply is cut from daily to a couple times a week; using cut as in "cut the budget", not as in "cut your finger off". Isn't English great?

The first vehicle expansion took me from 115 to 175, which is where I'm at now and probably won't expand further until January '42.

You're asking for too much here. FP is a FP to the AI code. You could put the Norm FP on in mid-'43 as it has even greater range than the Jake. IMO, I would not use any but the Glen, but its your game.

You're asking for too much here. FP is a FP to the AI code. You could put the Norm FP on in mid-'43 as it has even greater range than the Jake. IMO, I would not use any but the Glen, but its your game.

I'm not asking for anything, just expressing an opinion. My opponent says it's OK with him if I put Jake's on subs, but I'm confirming that with him as English is not his first language, and I often don't express myself as well as I should.

Meanwhile, the airdrop on Malacca is a NO-GO, as recent recon flights now show 5 units defending (I think they moved by rail from Temuloh and/or Singapore). But, Kuantan was captured on 21 Dec and the defending base force and AA unit surrendered, opening the trail to Temuloh for the 6 Tank Rgt. Also SW of Taiping, one of the defending brigades surrendered and the other retreated OFF THE ROAD to Ulan Melintang on 21 Dec, opening the main highway to the south for my tanks; 5 Recon Rgt will follow to Ulan Melintang, while 1 and 14 Tank Rgts move quickly south toward Kuala Lumpur.

On Mindanao, 1 Para Assault Div dropped on Zamboanga on 21 Dec, joining a battalion of 90 Inf Rgt in a 10:1 shock attack that captured the base; resource and light industry are undamaged. The para fragment will be airlifted back out to Davao to prepare for the siege of Cagayan. On the same day the Nagato-Mutsu TF engaged and sank 4 PT's at Cagayan in 2 separate actions, sustaining no damage themselves.

On Luzon, abandoned Clark Field was occupied by elements of 48 Div on 20 Sep, isolating Subic Bay and Bataan from overland supply. 65 Bde attacked at Subic Bay and the defenders surrendered. Bataan now has 4 units, with armor, and Manila is defended by 31 units. Fortress Manila will not work, even with the 100 supply per day generated by LI. Heavy artillery from China is unloading at Lingayen to start the siege of Manila.

In China, I've been too complaisant, assuming a run-to-the-hills defense by the Chinese. The Chinese river crossing from Ichang was with 3 corps, not the whole stack, but it was successful in that it opened a retreat route.

Now the question is, what does he do with the 6 corps east of the river? The only route out is back to Ichang, unless he captures the woods hex. That's not possible unless he brings the rest of the stack across the river from Ichang. Will he risk it? If he's going to cross he had better hurry cause I have reinforcements coming from Wuchang and Hankow.

My defeated brigade is back in Nanchang with 2 divisions that just arrived from the Shanghai area, so that city is OK for now. He's already showing supply problems, so an advance into Nanchang would not be a good idea. Those 7 corps should move behind the river to the west and defend. Problem is, I can be across the river before him, but I would have to leave Nanchang lightly defended to do that.

The Muntok invasion TF loses several ships to air attack from Singapore and Palembang. An LRCAP of Zero's from Singkawang shot down 3 Buffaloes, 1 B-339D, and 1 Vildebeest from Singapore while losing 2, but an xAK and 446 troops were lost. Then a wave of Vildebeest from Palembang ssnk another xAK and an APD, costing 962 troops. I considered recalling this TF, but as it is only one hex from it's objective it will proceed and hopefully completely unload at night (most of the TF is xAKL).

Subs

No actions of any significance.

Malaya

On the 25th, 15 Indian Bde at Ulan Melintang is bombed successively by Sally’s, Lily’s, Sonia’s, and Ida’s taking 203 casualties, then attacked by 5 Recon Rgt and destroyed.
Air attacks on the 26th are ineffective.
On the 27th, abandoned Kuala Lumpur is captured by 1 Tank Rgt.
On the 29th, 18 Div assembles at Temuloh under LGEN Yamada. Fighter sweeps of Singapore begin on the 29th while bombers continually hit Allied units in the open at Malacca. The 22 Indian Bde suffers 325 casualties at Malacca on the 29th and 411 on the 30th before retiring south. Zero’s and Oscar’s sweeping Singapore from Kuantan and Singkawang quickly gain the upper hand, killing 17 Buffalo’s and 4 Hurricane’s over 3 days (per FoW reports).

Borneo

On the 27th, a deliberate attack at Sambas drops the fort level from 1 to 0, then the surrounded Allied force at Sambas surrenders to 4 Div (-) on the 28th.
The Brunei oil facility is fully repaired on the 27th.
On the 29th, CL Yura TF engages an MTB TF at Tarakan, but neither side gets a hit; Yura comes back on the 31st and sinks 5 of the 6 MTB’s at Tarakan after which an amphibious TF unloads troops.
At the other end of the island Pontianak is captured by 4 Div (-) on the 31st.

Sumatra (& vicinity)

On the 25th, troops unload at Muntok. Several air attacks on the TF result in the downing of 5 Dutch 139-WH, and damage to 13 other attacking planes. No ships were hit. Looks like I guessed right deciding to proceed with this invasion, as no Vildebeest, nor Swordfish, participated in the attacks. The TF completely unloaded in one day and got away without further damage. Muntok is captured on the 26th.

Philippines

On the 25th, significant air losses to flak over Bataan and Manila force further attacks at higher altitude. Cotabato is captured unopposed on the 25th.
Continual fighter sweeps of Cagayan, Manila, Bataan, and Batangas average 1 Warhawk per day over the week. Bombing of Manila is largely ineffective with many planes sustaining damage for little or no result (all week). Lucena is captured unopposed on the 28th.
1 Rgt (1 Div) arrives at Lingayen on the 29th.
Catbalogen is captured on the 30th (resources undamaged).

China

On the 25th, Chinese units at Chengchow suffer 147 casualties from bombing. A deliberate attack by 35 Div (+) destroys 10 Chinese Base Force, the sole defender. Resource and industry suffer significant (>60%) damage.
Chinese units in open terrain near Nanchang suffer 556 casualties from bombing over the week.
Chinese units at Loyang (also open terrain) suffer 533 casualties from bombing over the week, then 3 units retire to the west on the 30th leaving 23 units to defend Loyang.

Malaya

Oscar’s and Zero’s stationed at Kuantan continue to sweep Singapore. On the 4th, 11 Allied planes are shot down at the cost of 1 Zero. Oscar’s at Singkawang begin sweeping Palembang.

On the 1st, bombing at Malacca inflicts 159 casualties, followed by a deliberate attack by 14 Tank Rgt on a Punjab Bn at 10:1. Meanwhile, 1 Tank Rgt captures Port Dickson unopposed. Malacca resource suffers 2% damage. On the 3rd, 22 Aus Bde takes 102 casualties from bombing at Kluong. On the 4th, 112 RAF Base Force suffers 90 casualties from bombing before withdrawing from Kluong. Kluong is captured unopposed on the 5th. On the 6th, bombing of units at Johore Bharu commences, with little effect. By the 7th, 5 Div and 18 Div are at Kluong resting before the advance to Johore Bharu. Imperial Guard Div is a few days behind and the last regiment of 56 Div is unloading at Kota Bharu; already in strat mode, the 56th will arrive at Kluong in a few days. By the 10th or 11th of January, 4 complete divisions, 3 tank regiments, supporting artillery and the 25 Army HQ will be ready to attack the ~20 units at Johore Bharu. I fully expect these to retire into Singapore before being attacked, as there are an additional 20 units already at Singapore.

Borneo

The invasion TF at Tarakan sinks the last British MTB there on the 1st. Balabac is captured unopposed on the 5th. At Tarakan, deliberate attacks on the 6th and 7th reduce defensive forts from 2 to 0; the base should be captured on the 8th. Allied mines are swept at Singkawang on the 7th, and replaced with Japanese mines. Troops unload at Tawau on the 7th.

Sumatra (& vicinity)

On the 1st, troops unload at Billiton and the TF is attacked by Swordfish from Batavia. Torpedoes sink one xAK and one APD. On the 2nd, Force Z shows up with 4 CL and several DD and wipes out a 4 ship amphib TF with an engineer company aboard bound for Billiton. Billiton is captured on the 2nd by the previously unloaded infantry regiment; resource is 20% damaged.

On the 3rd, CA Suzuya/Kumano TF engages and sinks a lone HDML near Palembang, then bombards Palembang causing 181 casualties and 283 fires along with some minor airfield and port damage. On the 5th, Toboali is captured unopposed by an overland move from Muntok.

Philippines

Fighter sweeps of Cagayan, Manila, Bataan, and Batangas continue.

Level bombing continues to be ineffective, with high damage rates to aircraft, but little damage done on the ground.

On the 1st, troops unload at Taytay and capture it on the 2nd. On the 3rd, they start being airlifted out of the base to Davao.

On the 3rd, BB Nagato/Mutsu TF engages a 4 PT TF near Cagayan, sinking 3. Later BB Fuso TF sinks the 4th near Siquijor.

The Allies had previously abandoned Clark Field and concentrated their forces in Manila, with a few units in Bataan. Malaya

The Allied defensive force is now split between Johore Bharu and Singapore. Fighter sweeps of both those bases continue to destroy Allied planes at a greater rate than Japanese losses. Level bombing of ground units at Johore Bharu is mostly ineffective.

On the 8th, Mersing is captured by 1 Tank Rgt unopposed.

By the 12th the 4 Japanese divisions of 25th Army have reached Kluong and are resting, but as the hex is over stacked, one moves back (in strat mode) to Malacca. After resting for a few more days they will advance into Johore Bharu.

Borneo

On the 8th, the Allied minefield at Singkawang is swept, troops land at Tandjoengselor (near Tarakan) capturing it on the 9th. Tawau is occupied on the 8th. On the 12th, Banshee’s from the Samarinda/Balikpapan area bomb a Tarakan reinforcement TF, damaging several transports. Meanwhile, at the other end of the island, the 4th Div begins loading transports at Singkawang bound for Palembang.

Luzon

Fighter sweeps of Manila keep the base suppressed, but bombing of the airfield causes little damage, mostly readily repairable runway hits. My previous post posed a question concerning Allied troop movements at Clark Field:

The 65th Bde began moving to Bataan with tanks and artillery from Clark Field. A battleship TF is at Iba ready to bombard Bataan once 65 Bde arrives.

Fighter sweeps continue. Level bombing of Johore Bharu is intermittently effective. 25 Army (-) starts south from Kluong on the 16th and arrives on the 18th. The Allied defense is still split 50-50 (roughly) between Johore Bharu and Singapore.

Borneo

Four transports sink near Tarakan after disembarking troops; Tarakan is captured on the 14th (2 refinery and 2 oil points damaged). Tarakan port is cleared of Allied mines on the 16th. On the 18th, Swordfish puts a torpedo in a CM laying mines at Tarakan and KXV puts 2 torpedoes in CVL Shoho near Billiton. With 75 flotation damage she will limp back to Pontianak, hopefully, to get the minor damage fixed before trying to return to Saigon. But, I would bet that Singapore will be captured before Shoho even tries to attempt Siagon, and Singapore is much closer and a bigger repair yard.

Philippines

Mine sweeping at Bataan begins on the 13th, while BB’s Hyuga and Ise bombard the shore installations and defenders. Fighter sweeps continue throughout the islands. Level bombing of Manila is ineffective. 65 Bde (+) captures Bataan on the 17th and mine clearing resumes on the 18th.

China

Bombing of ground units is somewhat effective. Maneuvering to attack the surrounded 88 Chinese Corps results in destruction of the “B” Bde on the 12th, the “A” Bde on the 13th, and the “C” Bde on the 18th, all near Wenchow. The drive north from Nanyang toward Sian is stopped by the consolidation of retreating Chinese units from Nanyang and Loyang as they converge toward Sian. Japanese units in that area will use economy of force to defend that line, while units excess to defensive needs will move south through Hankow to push the Chinese defense back into Changsha, then further southwest to capture Kukong.

Other

Troops unload at Tulagi on the 15th and capture it on the 16th. Troops unload at Attu on the 16th and capture it on the 17th. Troops unload at Amchitka on the 17th and capture it on the 18th. 4 Div departs Singkawang for Palembang on the 16th and unloads there on the 18th.

This TF has been bombarding from 38k yards and has not yet hit a mine, and has not yet cleared a mine, although 3 DMS ships are in the TF. I’m going to reduce the range to add fire from the cruisers to see what happens. The fires in Manila have begun to cause damage to the light industry, which shouldn’t be producing for the Allies anyway, as the Japanese are in the hex. Periodic artillery bombardment shows the Allies’ effective strength to be about 2/3 of nominal AV. When 21 and 38 Divisions arrive from China we’ll conduct a deliberate attack; until then more naval bombardment is in order.

China

Level bombing continues to destroy and disable Chinese troops, but not much is happening on the ground. South of Nanyang the 100 Chinese Corps and 14 Chinese Base Force are being continuously attacked on the ground and from the air.

Ambon

Reinforcements unload on 27 Jan, while the base is bombarded by a CA TF. BB Fuso bombards on 28 Jan. The mini-KB sinks a Brit CL near Kendari on 29 Jan. Deliberate attacks from 27 to 29 Jan reduce the forts and result in capture of the base on 29 Jan.

Aleutian Islands

Complaisance and laziness bite me in the a$$ when an Allied CA TF, shadowed by a CV TF, visit the Aleutians. The cruisers sink 4 xAK and a CM trying to land reinforcements at Adak, followed by carrier aircraft sinking an xAP and 2 xAK near Amchitka. All other ships bound for Adak scatter, heading back to Paramushiro and/or Etorofu.

Unfortunately the Kates used bombs, not torpedoes. There are adequate torpedo stores on both carriers, but bombs may have been used due to the range (8). As the full speed run caused some damage to all ships, the group will retire to Hakodate to repair and replenish aircraft. Hopefully, Enterprise is out of action for at least a month. The BB’s will bombard Adak as they pass that base.

The final brigade of 38th Div is unloading at Lingayen while the other 2 brigades rest there. When the division arrives at Manila another deliberate attack will be ordered.

China

With the south coastal area cleared of Chinese units, the Japanese infantry is maneuvering for an attack on Pingsiang from the southeast, and on Kukong from the east. Five tank regiments which had been operating in the Chengchow-Nanning area are moved south to assist the coming attacks; two are loaded on transports at Shanghai bound for Pakhoi and Haiphong.

Aleutian Islands

Adak is now defended by 11 Allied units of over 300 AV. That would require at least 2 full divisions for the Japanese to capture the base, so extraction of the Chinese Assault Div there will be planned.

I thought about pursuit, but the 2 CV's in my TF were already pretty beat up from the full speed run to the east, as were all the other ships in the TF. Since I have no idea where Lexington, Yorktown, and Saratoga are, pursuit toward Seattle could be disastrous if one or more of them are near there. Another full speed run to get away from his CV's could put my CV's out for quite a while (as it is it took several days to get back to Hakodate and will take another week to get fixed; the BB's are still enroute to Tokyo as Hakodate is too small to repair them). I have eyes around Seattle, but haven't seen E come by.

Philippines

Even with 3 AKE at Batangas the battleships cannot reload there as it takes too long to reload the AKE with supply, so they (the BB’s) all go back to Hong Kong. Allied CL TF engages 2 TF’s loading at Billiton, one resource and one transport. 2 xAK, E, and 2 SC are sunk, while the 8 JAAF Coy is lost. This base and Toboali will be covered by CA TF’s until Java is secured, as the raiders seem to based at Batavia.

A combat task force headed by CA Aoba engages 6 PT boats at Adak on 27 Feb and sinks 3, but suffers one torpedo hit slowing the TF enough that Banshee’s from Adak can reach it during daylight hours. Two bomb hits slow Aoba further, and another on the 28th puts it under. A DD and supply xAKL are also sunk.
