I will try to answer objectively:
The game can turn into time eater. It has that one turn more effect in it, at least for me. But I'm hooked on it, so I am not very objective.
Turn duration is all about how much you decide to put into it. You can take relaxed approach and not try to micromanage everything, just move your units and watch the game develop. Turns will go pretty fast then. You can take a hands on approach and watch inside every division which regiment is fully fit and which is not, micromanage and change division compositions every turn. The turn duration will then rise exponentially. But, you do not have to do that. The game allows you to group all your units to divisions, corps, and armies and move them as such. So, it is up to you.
Where this games really shines, is its attention to historical accuracy. Any amateur historian (me included) will be thrilled with little historical events happening every turn. For every history fan, it is great learning experience and enjoyment.
So the bottom line is, it can be time eater, but what bought me is its historical accuracy (research done here beats any other game in the genre)

that I like the grand strategy aspect and combat...I just worry about lengthy turns of 30+ minutes if there is a ton of micromanagement...I want to be able to finish a game in a reasonable amount of time and in a relaxed manner...my day job is filled with incredible attention to detail and a million things to track.... I want a game that is a nice distraction and fun...
I think this game is for you then, no tons of micromanagement and move the troops around is easy (as interface) but you have to think before split your guys around the map (strategic choices), I guess several turns can be 30+ minutes but not all (my experience with the old title).

ok, let me see. A dozen details .... mmmh
mortar boats, tinclads, cottonclads
ships can land bonus against siege roll
armories, steelmills and weaponshops
development level slows down movement
can redeploy units with some railpool
a leader can be promoted without him having to leave a stack
divisions cost nothing and are basically unlimited now
can press shift in any region to see the connections
warmap is new, plus has 4 filters
tooltips get colors and icons
sound played when turn ends, better display of status message
captured equipment can be refilled
garrisons pop up automatically against raiders
farmfields produce extra supply
and some others minor things...

I think I am sold...just waiting on patch release.... and then I notice that the patch is in beta...... hmmm

Can order afloat transporting commands to unload automatically upon arrival.
Subordinate leaders still have to be removed from a stack to promote, however.
Love the unlimited/no-cost divisions, by the way. Makes changing leaders easy.
I wondered what farmsfields did! (There's no info on them when I mouse roll-over)

The patch has been in beta testing since before launch with bugs fixed and more things added right up until it was released today. The devs felt is was ready for a public release and undoubtedly there will be more updates as the game goes forward. I wouldn't let "beta" concern you.

Well...

AGEOD´s American Civil War, Gary Grigsby's War Between The States or Forge of Freedom?
This question can be found in many forums.
Gary Grigsby's War Between The States is a really excellent strategy game.
Forge of Freedom reminds strongly of Civilization.
Both games brings great fun, but ultimately are only good or excellent strategy games in blue and gray uniforms.
See Chess.
I can buy a Chess set with the figures of Star Wars, Lord of the Ring, or even with soldiers of the American Civil War.
The look will change, but the core, the Game Engine of the game is still chess.

AGEOD´s American Civil War!
And it's damn good!
Exotic is that it made in France. 
To arms in Dixie or storming the Bastille.
No matter.
I love red wine, cheese, French bread, snails and AGEOD´s American Civil War.
Not always in that order.

It's true that these volunteers uniforms speak for themselves, thanks for pointing that out. Although in addition to form, you get substance too in CW2!
