It should not be precluded from happening though, as this I believe, refers to carrier landings only. It could carry 6 missiles and alert birds in the case of fleet defence in war would have carried 6 with the expectation that they are bringing none back [:D].

Did threat type make a difference. I always thought the Phoenix was designed for large non-(or little)maneuvering targets.

C variant much better than A at hitting agile targets.
