I in fact own Gal Civ 2.
It's just becoming a bit dated and news of Gal Civ 3 made me want to get my space sim fix in.
Also enjoy epic games. Let's just say I own Endless Space, SotSE and Gal Civ 2 and expect to be playing Distant Worlds until Gal Civ 3 hits.

epic, deep, steepish learning curve...but in the end once you know what going on smooth flowing with relatively minor grinding compared to many 4x games

No game comes close to the epic feel and storytelling that DW gives.The games mentioned are too abstracted to be epic.In DW you could have a 1000 ship fleet defending 500 empire colonies.[:D]

Distant worlds mostly has a deep, steepish learning curve because of hidden or poorly explained game mechanics.
But mostly I like it because it is so unique; it really is a game that gives an impression of an alive universe, so long as you don't try to peek under the hood too closely.

Depends on your definition of EPIC. A game with 1 ship can be EPIC if the story and world size is right. Freelancer comes to mind, now THAT was an EPIC game and story.[:)]
