The Allied AI is really good here. It really takes it to you as Axis. As Axis I don't mind taking the hits, but when I am unable to fallback and take hit after hit it is very annoying.
As mentioned earlier, if to fallback causes some disruption then so be it. I need to be able to fall back. After being beat to nothing they fallback anyway. I'd rather lose 2 or 3 men than 9 or 10.
Axis need to be able to counter attack to run a proper defense in depth.
I always like setting up lines behind rivers for obvious reasons.

With the new patch I'm trying out axis again.
The Ai got a bit aggressive with a small commando unit. I collapsed on it and the first battle he lost 3 and I lost 5. Pretty high. The second battle follows (check screen shot).
1k commandos pretty much took out a mechanized division. If you include the first battle, where the commando unit was hit from 2 sides, it did.
I don't think air power should explain this, but if it does????????
I used air power also.

Yes, that's a little strange! But then the axis have hardly any offensive capability in this game? I've put it off to the side for awhile. I don't think that it's quite there yet!!

As Allies the game has a good feel. I like the axis Ai he is better than me. Like I have said, I like the game. I cannot get a feel for the Axis.

RCH, the casualties there are the result of ground support. Without all that air support its impossible for the commando unit to do that much damage. If you look at the (#) beside the two units you see that in actual fact the commando unit caused no casualties. But the Germans did well on their ground support rolls.

Frank I just looked at RCH's screenshot of results. German 9:1 attack in open with a mech advantage. With ground support it became 18:11, but Germans suffered 6:1 losses. It's just hard for players to either anticipate or understand combat results in many cases like this.
Perhaps one thing to consider changing is putting a cap on ground support, to not be more than 2x or 3x the final ground strength. At least for cases like this, a German counter-attack at 9:1 would still have a reasonable expectation for success.

I agree. The results are no way close to being realistic! I know, it's just a Game....

pzgndr, yes, if the results had been separated out showing casualties caused by the 10 ground support the battle results would have looked normal.
The ground support did score high, its unusual to see 6 casualties from ground support.
And you're right, perhaps a limit on how much ground support can be added as this was just a small commando unit and it was assigned more than a third of all the Allied air support in Italy. Although, the Germans also put massive air support into the battle but there was nothing for them to attack since the battle was so one-sided.
I'll think about this.

I have been able to win a decisive victory my last two times playing the Axis neutral handicap. Here are the strategies that I used.
I don't move the 24th Pz. IMO too much fuel is used to get it south for mimimal combat time.
I don't resupply the 5 stacking value units at all. I feel that they consume too many supply points. I use them until they are eliminated.
I only resupply the 4 stacking value units if absolutely necessary in a specific situation. Again I let them fight until eliminated.
I feel that since supplies and fuel are paramount in this game, 2 and 3 stacking value units are king especially the better quality units.
I like to place a fortified infantry in the best terrain available. The AI will usually attack it over and over as I keep resupplying it. Even as the rest of the line pulls back, a number of AI units stay behind trying to eliminate that unit. Eventually that unit will be lost but the more you can delay the Allies moving units north the better. The clock works against them.
I hope that this helps a little.
